The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The name space.dll refers historically to the Space Screen Saver included with Microsoft Plus. for Kids, an obsolete Microsoft add-on created for Windows 95-era systems. The file supported the Space screen saver rather than providing a general Windows feature.
That distinction matters because a missing-DLL message identifies a file requested by the program being launched. It does not prove that Windows itself has lost a file from C:WindowsSystem32.
The same filename can also belong to unrelated applications. DCS World, Wobbly Life modifications, and other software may contain their own Space.dll. A path such as:

C:GamesDCSWorldbinSpace.dll
does not refer to the Microsoft Plus. for Kids screen-saver file.
Do not decide what to install from the filename alone. Check the application name and full path first.
Historical file catalogs associate the Microsoft file with the internal description Space Screen Saver, Microsoft Plus. for Kids, and Microsoft Corporation. Older records also describe it as a legacy 32-bit application file, but those records are not a current Microsoft specification or download source.
Symptoms and likely causes
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “This application failed to start because space.dll was not found.” | The owning application is missing the file | Repair or reinstall that application |
| “The program can’t start because space.dll is missing from your computer.” | The file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed | Check the application folder and antivirus history |
| “Error loading space.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | The DLL or one of its dependencies cannot load | Check the full path, architecture, dependencies, and security blocks |
| “A required component is missing: space.dll.” | An incomplete application installation | Run the program’s repair or file-validation feature |
| “The file space.dll is missing or corrupted.” | The file may be damaged, replaced, or incompatible | Reinstall from trusted application media |
| “Plus. Space has encountered a problem and needs to close.” | A legacy screen-saver and display-driver compatibility problem | Change the display driver or select another screen saver |
| The error names a modern game or launcher | The file may be unrelated to Microsoft Plus. for Kids | Restore it from that game or launcher |
These are common descriptions rather than guaranteed Windows wording. The important evidence is the program being launched, the complete file path, and the event or application log.
First identify which program owns space.dll
Before changing Windows, determine what requested the file.
Check the program in the error dialog
- Read the title bar and body of the error.
- Note the executable being launched.
- Check whether the program is a screen saver, an old Microsoft Plus. component, a game, a launcher, or another application.
- Do not copy a DLL into a Windows folder until the owning program is known.
If the dialog appears when Windows starts, check the startup entry:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an unfamiliar or legacy program.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, when available.
- Record the folder containing the executable.
Check the application folder
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the program’s installation folder.
- Search that folder for
space.dll. - If the file exists, right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when present.
A file that exists but still produces “specified module could not be found” may have a missing dependency, the wrong architecture, a damaged image, or a Windows security block. The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Read the Faulting application path, Faulting module path, and any dependency or side-by-side information.
The path is more useful than the filename. A file inside the old program’s folder should be restored from that program. A file inside a modern game folder should be restored through that game’s launcher.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most reliable fix for an application-owned DLL.
Use the application’s repair option
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is not available, use the program’s own installer:

- Key is included
- Open the program’s installation media or trusted installer.
- Run
setup.exeor the application installer. - Choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent option.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the original program again.
A successful repair restores the file to the application directory and allows the program to launch without the missing-DLL message. It does not necessarily place anything in System32.
Reinstall an old Microsoft Plus. component
If the failing program is specifically the Plus. Space screen saver, use the original Microsoft Plus. for Kids media or a legitimate archived installer that you already trust. There is no verified current Microsoft download page for the original Plus. for Kids package.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not use a random DLL download page as a substitute for the installer. A standalone file may have the wrong build, exports, dependencies, or architecture, and it may be tampered with.
For an old installer:
- Copy the installer to a local folder.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and click Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- If setup fails, right-click the installer again and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an older Windows version offered by the wizard.
- Select Apply, then run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot make every obsolete screen saver work on modern Windows. If installation succeeds but the screen saver still crashes, use another screen saver rather than forcing the obsolete component to load.
Repair a game or launcher instead
If the error belongs to a game, do not install Microsoft Plus. for Kids. Use the game’s own file-repair feature.
Typical steps are:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s settings or properties.
- Select Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent command.
- Wait for validation to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
The exact label varies by launcher. The goal is to restore space.dll from the game’s own distribution, not from a similarly named archive.

Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate old DLL, especially when the file is obsolete or comes from an unusual installer. It may also correctly identify a tampered file.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Check the detected file path and the application that installed it.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- The file came from trusted original application media.
- The path belongs to the expected program.
- The installer and application are trustworthy.
- Your security product does not identify the file as malware or a modified component.
If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the parent application from clean, trusted media. Do not download a second copy from an unrelated DLL site.
After restoring or reinstalling:
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- Start the repaired application only after the scan completes.
A filename cannot prove that a file is safe. Verify its path, source, digital signature when available, and security status.

Fix 3: Check compatibility and 32-bit versus 64-bit issues
A DLL must match the application that loads it. Windows 64-bit can run many older 32-bit applications, but that does not mean a 32-bit DLL belongs in every 64-bit application directory.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
merely because an online instruction says to do so. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs.
The correct location is normally the owning program’s directory, unless its original installer specifies a different location.
To try compatibility settings:
- Locate the program’s
.exefile. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application again.
If the program is 32-bit, install its 32-bit dependencies and use the application’s own installer. Do not select a DLL based only on whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If compatibility settings do not help, the application may depend on graphics, installer, or runtime behavior that current Windows no longer supports. Replacing one DLL will not solve that broader problem.
Fix 4: Address the Plus. Space display-driver problem
Microsoft documented a specific historical failure in which Plus. Space stopped working after a video-driver change. The reported result was a crash message stating that Plus. Space had encountered a problem and needed to close.
If the problem began immediately after a display-driver update, try the following.
Roll back the display driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the screen saver again.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install a compatible driver from the computer manufacturer or graphics-chip manufacturer. For a business or older computer, the manufacturer’s support page may provide a driver better suited to the hardware than a generic current package.

Update or reinstall the driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device only if you have a known replacement driver or Windows can recover the device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver package.
- Restart again.
- Select another screen saver temporarily and test normal display operation.
If the driver was installed through Windows Update, you can also check:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install only the display driver appropriate for your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Manually comparing hardware models and driver packages can be tedious, especially when several display drivers appear applicable. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
If the screen saver still fails, select a different screen saver:

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They normally do not recreate an application-owned file from Microsoft Plus. for Kids or from a modern game.
Use them when you also see broader Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, failed Windows updates, or multiple Windows component errors.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Read the final message.
- Restart Windows.
DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source. If it reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than repeatedly running the same command.

After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program. If it reports that it could not repair all files, review the result and continue with application repair rather than assuming space.dll has been restored.
Microsoft’s documented System File Checker procedure recommends running DISM before SFC. Microsoft also documents DISM repair-source options.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not recreate a DLL that belongs only to an old application.
The manual process of interpreting DISM and SFC results can involve repeated scans without showing which application changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and identify problems before its full version performs repairs, but it is not required and cannot replace reinstalling the program that owns space.dll.

- A corrupt installer
- An architecture mismatch
- A blocked file
- An incompatible graphics driver
Microsoft explains the purpose and syntax of Regsvr32. Use it only when the application’s documented installer specifically requires registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading space.dll from an arbitrary DLL repository is not a reliable repair method. The file may have:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Different exported functions
- Missing dependencies
- A modified or malicious payload
- A path that does not match the application’s DLL search order
It can also hide the real problem. If the original application was incompletely installed, copying a file into System32 may make one message disappear while creating a version conflict or loading the wrong library later.
Use these sources instead:
- The original application installer or installation media
- The application’s built-in repair option
- A game launcher’s file-validation feature
- The hardware manufacturer’s driver package
- Windows Update for Windows components
- Microsoft’s own Windows repair instructions
There is no current verified Microsoft download page for the original Microsoft Plus. for Kids package.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through this escalation checklist:
- Confirm the exact executable that fails.
- Record the full path requested in the error or Event Viewer.
- Check whether
space.dllexists in that application’s folder. - Confirm that antivirus did not quarantine it.
- Run the application’s repair or verification feature again.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit and whether its dependencies match.
- Test Windows compatibility settings.
- Review recent display-driver changes if the failure involves Plus. Space.
- Check the application’s own logs.
- Inspect Event Viewer for a faulting module or dependency.
- Run DISM followed by SFC only if Windows shows broader corruption.
- Remove the application and reinstall it from clean, trusted media if its installation remains inconsistent.
FAQ
Is space.dll a Windows system file?
Not normally. The historically identified Microsoft file belongs to Microsoft Plus. for Kids and its Space Screen Saver. It should not be treated like a current Windows component.
Is space.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the file’s location, source, signature, and security-product results. A file in an unexpected temporary folder deserves more scrutiny than one restored by the original application installer.
Should I copy space.dll into System32?
No. Restore it through the application that owns it. Do not place an application DLL in System32 or SysWOW64 based on a generic online recommendation.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, may be blocked or corrupt, or may not match the application’s architecture. The message does not guarantee that the named file itself is absent.
Will SFC restore space.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. An application-owned DLL from Plus. for Kids or a game normally requires repair or reinstallation of that application.
Do I need to register space.dll?
Usually no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs with registration entry points. It does not repair an ordinary screen-saver or application-support DLL.
Why does the old Plus. screen saver crash after a driver update?
Legacy screen savers can depend on graphics behavior that changed with newer display drivers. Try rolling back or replacing the display driver, and use another screen saver if Plus. Space remains incompatible.
