ntevt.dll Errors: Trace and Repair the Windows WMI Provider

ntevt.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the WMI Event Log Provider. If Windows reports that ntevt.dll is missing or cannot load, repair the Windows image rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The normal file path is:

%SystemRoot%System32wbemntevt.dll

This guide applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. The same repair sequence is appropriate whether the error appears when Windows starts, when Event Viewer or a monitoring tool opens, or when one application attempts to use WMI.

What ntevt.dll does

ntevt.dll is part of Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. It is associated with the MS_NT_EVENTLOG_PROVIDER provider in the rootCIMV2 namespace and supplies event-log information through WMI.

It normally runs through WMI provider-host processes such as WmiPrvSE.exe. You generally should not launch the DLL directly, copy it into an application folder, or register it manually.

The provider DLL and related WMI files are stored below:

%WINDIR%System32Wbem

A WMI provider log may also be called Ntevt.log. That log is useful when WMI itself continues failing after Windows file repair.

Common ntevt.dll messages

Windows or an application may display variants of these loader messages:

  • “The program can’t start because ntevt.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting ntevt.dll.”
  • “Error loading ntevt.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because ntevt.dll was not found.”
  • “ntevt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are common Windows loader-message patterns, not a confirmed Microsoft list for every Windows release.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ntevt.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, the file may be in the wrong location, or the calling program may be using an invalid load context.

Before repairing: verify the real file

Do not start by downloading `ntevt.dll. First check whether the expected Windows copy exists and whether it is signed by Microsoft.

Check the path in File Explorer

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
%SystemRoot%System32wbem

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Look for ntevt.dll.
  3. Right-click it, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signature and choose Details.

A normal Windows copy should be in the wbem directory and should have a valid Microsoft signature. A file with the same name in Downloads, a temporary directory, an application folder, or an unfamiliar user profile directory is not automatically legitimate.

Check with PowerShell

Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell, select Run as administrator, and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$path = "$env:windirSystem32wbemntevt.dll"
Get-Item $path
Get-AuthenticodeSignature $path

The first command reports whether the expected file exists. The second reports its signature status and signer information.

You can also check the file version without treating it as a universal version standard:

(Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32wbemntevt.dll").VersionInfo

If the file is missing, unsigned, or located somewhere unexpected, do not copy another version over it. Continue with Windows servicing repair.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave the component store or protected system files inconsistent.

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install every available update.
  6. Restart when Windows requests it.
  7. Return to the same page and check again until no additional updates are offered.
  8. Test the program or WMI function that produced the error.

If updates fail, record the displayed error code and continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not repeatedly copy DLL files into the WMI directory.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes.

This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged Windows copy of ntevt.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a repair source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Then run:

cmd
sfc /scannow

  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the original program or WMI operation again.

How to interpret the results

  • “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM repaired or verified the Windows image.
  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC replaced damaged files. Restart and test again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means additional repair is needed.
  • A DISM error stating that source files could not be found may indicate a damaged update path or a repair source that does not match the installed Windows build.

If DISM cannot use Windows Update, an administrator can provide a matching Windows installation source with the /Source option. The source must closely match the installed operating system:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess

Do not guess at a source path or use installation files from an unrelated Windows release.

Manually comparing versions while repeating SFC and DISM can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair function is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this fix.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus scan time if needed.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

Security software may quarantine a legitimate file, or it may have detected a malicious file with the same name outside the normal WMI directory.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent entries for ntevt.dll.
  6. Open an entry to view its path, detection name, and action.
  7. Do not select Allow on device merely because the filename is familiar.

If the file was found outside %SystemRoot%System32wbem, leave it blocked until its authenticity is established. Run Scan options, choose Full scan, and follow with Microsoft Defender Offline scan if malware is suspected.

If Defender identifies the genuine Windows copy as quarantined, first confirm the path and Microsoft signature. Restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again, so restoration should be conditional on verification. DISM and SFC are safer ways to restore a protected Windows component than downloading a replacement.

Fix 4: Check WMI and the provider host

Time needed: 10–20 minutes.

If ntevt.dll exists and has a valid signature but WMI tools still fail, the problem may be WMI registration, repository damage, permissions, or a provider-host crash rather than the DLL itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the WMI service

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
services.msc

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Management Instrumentation.
  3. Confirm that its status is Running.
  4. Double-click the service and note its Startup type.
  5. Do not change service dependencies unless a specific administrator-led repair requires it.

You can also check the service from an elevated Command Prompt:

sc query winmgmt

If WMI is running but applications still fail, open Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Applications and Services Logs.
  4. Review WMI-related errors around the time of the failure.
  5. Also check Windows Logs, especially Application and System.

Look for provider-host crashes, repository errors, access-denied messages, or events naming a different missing dependency.

Do not reset the repository as a first step

A present and correctly signed ntevt.dll does not prove that the WMI repository is healthy. However, repository repair can affect other WMI providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

winmgmt /salvagerepository is an advanced operation. winmgmt /resetrepository is more disruptive and should not be used as a routine DLL fix. Back up the machine and investigate the WMI events before using either command. In many cases, DISM, SFC, Windows updates, or repairing the affected application is the safer first response.

Fix 5: Repair the application that triggers the error

Time needed: 10–30 minutes.

If Windows starts normally and only one application reports ntevt.dll, the application may be invoking WMI incorrectly or may have a damaged installation. Repair Windows first, then repair the application.

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the program.
  9. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset, if available, or uninstall and reinstall the program from its official source.

For older desktop programs:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the application.
  5. Choose Change or Repair, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

Do not place ntevt.dll beside the program executable. A third-party program should use the Windows WMI provider supplied by Windows.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to them

Time needed: 15–30 minutes.

A driver is not the normal source of ntevt.dll. Consider this step when the problem began after a storage, chipset, graphics, security, or hardware change, or when Device Manager shows a device error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read Device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Note the provider and version.
  9. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
  10. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not remove an essential storage or chipset driver without a recovery plan. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, the Roll Back Driver button may be available in the same Driver tab.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually hunting through hardware pages can make it difficult to identify what changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair ntevt.dll.

Check Windows Features only when an application requires one

ntevt.dll is not normally restored by enabling a random Windows optional feature.

To review features:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:

text
optionalfeatures

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the listed features.
  3. Do not enable or disable features simply to resolve an ntevt.dll message.
  4. Change a feature only when the affected application’s documented requirements call for it.
  5. Restart if Windows asks you to.

WMI is a Windows management component, not a feature that should be repaired by toggling unrelated entries in this dialog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–60 minutes.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, driver installation, failed repair, or software change and an appropriate restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Select Next.
  6. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs to review expected changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.

System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but you should still back up important work first.

Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair

Time needed: 30–90 minutes.

Use an in-place repair when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows Update remains damaged, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective.

Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Start setup.exe from within Windows, choose the option to keep personal files and applications, and follow the installer prompts. Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you intend to erase the existing Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are uncertain which media matches the machine, stop and obtain guidance before proceeding. An in-place repair is substantially different from resetting or clean-installing Windows.

Why you should not download or register ntevt.dll

Random DLL download pages are unsafe sources for a Windows system component. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, have incorrect permissions, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged WMI registration.

Manual copying also bypasses Windows servicing. The file may be overwritten during a later update, and copying a 32-bit or 64-bit file based on guesswork can create a second problem.

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A WMI provider DLL is not normally repaired by running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 ntevt.dll

That command can produce an error or make unnecessary registry changes. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.

Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is also not the evidence-based first repair for ntevt.dll. It is a Windows WMI provider, not an ordinary runtime component.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations

The correct copy is determined by the installed Windows image and the process requesting WMI. Do not select a file by comparing a version number from an unrelated computer.

Known legacy metadata includes these 32-bit versions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Architecture Version Approximate size
32-bit 6.3.9600.16384 0.18 MB
32-bit 6.2.9200.16384 0.17 MB
32-bit 6.1.7601.17514 0.17 MB

These are not a complete Microsoft version catalog and do not establish the correct version for every Windows release. The version supplied by the installed Windows build is the one that matters.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use different system views from a 64-bit process. That is another reason not to copy a DLL into an application directory. Repair the Windows image so Windows can provide the appropriate component to the requesting process.

Likely causes and the appropriate response

Likely cause What to do
Damaged or missing Windows component Run DISM, then SFC, and restart
Incomplete Windows update Install pending updates, restart, then repeat DISM and SFC
Antivirus quarantine Check Protection history, verify path and signature, and scan
Disk or system corruption Review Event Viewer and consider System Restore
WMI repository or provider failure Review WMI events before advanced repository repair
A damaged third-party application Repair or reinstall that application
Wrong or suspicious copy Remove it through the security product and repair Windows
Driver or hardware change Check Device Manager and roll back or update the affected driver

FAQ

Is ntevt.dll safe?

The genuine file in %SystemRoot%System32wbem is a Microsoft Windows WMI provider. A file with the same name elsewhere must be checked for its Microsoft digital signature and scanned.

Is ntevt.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is the WMI Event Log Provider supplied with Microsoft Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy ntevt.dll from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, servicing state, or permissions. Use DISM and SFC to restore the installed image.

Does ntevt.dll need to be registered with regsvr32?

Normally, no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points, not a general repair method for WMI providers.

Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The message can refer to a missing dependency, an invalid load context, permissions, WMI damage, or a mismatched copy. Check the path and signature, then repair Windows.

What if DISM and SFC complete but the error remains?

Check Windows Security quarantine, Event Viewer, the WMI service, and the application that triggers the error. If the problem began after a recent change, use System Restore. Persistent Windows-wide damage may require an in-place repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I record before asking for support?

Record the exact error text, Windows edition and architecture, the program or tool that triggers it, the full path of any reported ntevt.dll, its signature status, and the final DISM and SFC results.
