The supported PC self-hosting route for a Space Engineers dedicated server is Keen Software House’s Windows Dedicated Server software. Install it from Steam’s Library > Tools section, or use SteamCMD with app ID 298740, then run SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe to create the server configuration and world. A practical installation needs Windows, .NET Framework 4.8 or newer, the Visual C++ redistributables, adequate CPU and memory, storage for the server and its data, and a reachable network connection.

This guide covers the manager’s first-run workflow, Steam and SteamCMD layouts, public networking, updates, backups, mods, Torch, and the trade-offs between operating the server yourself and renting managed hosting.

What the Space Engineers dedicated-server manager does

SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe is the configuration and launch interface for the Windows dedicated-server package. It lets you select whether the process runs as a local console application, choose a world, set the server name, and adjust the available session settings before starting the instance. The manager is separate from the normal game client: installing the client does not by itself create a dedicated server.

The supported self-host path described by Keen Software House is Windows Dedicated Server software. A Linux installation is not presented as an official equivalent in the current requirements and setup material, so use Windows for a supported self-host deployment. Xbox hosting follows a different service path; Keen lists Nitrado as its official Xbox server host, while the PC instructions in this guide apply to the Windows dedicated server.

Hardware, software, and network requirements

Keen’s published figures are for the dedicated server, not for the game client running on a player’s computer. The recommended specification gives the server more headroom for simulation load, players, and world activity.

Component Published minimum Published recommendation or practical note
Operating system Windows PC Use a supported, fully updated Windows installation.
CPU 3.2 GHz, three logical cores 4.5 GHz, three logical cores is Keen Software House’s recommendation.
Memory 6 GB RAM 10 GB RAM recommended by Keen Software House.
Runtime .NET Framework 4.8 or newer and the required Visual C++ redistributables.
Disk space The dedicated-server installation is approximately 8 GB before logs, world saves, and downloaded mods are added.
Internet connection Keen’s requirements list 5 Mbps bandwidth. Actual needs vary with player count, activity, and mod use.
Addressing A static public IP is optional, but Keen recommends one for public servers because favorites and history entries are stored by IP.

Leave additional disk capacity beyond the initial files. Saves can grow substantially, and retaining several backups, logs, and mod downloads is safer than operating with only the installation’s initial footprint. Fast, reliable storage also reduces the risk that a busy world stalls while the server writes data.

Install the server with Steam

Steam is the simplest route when the machine already has the Steam client. The dedicated server appears as a tool rather than as a normal game purchase.

  1. Install and sign in to Steam on the Windows machine that will run the server.
  2. Open Library, change the library filter to show Tools, and search for Space Engineers Dedicated Server.
  3. Choose Install and select the disk and library location where the server files should live.
  4. After the download completes, open the installation directory and locate DedicatedServer64SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe.
  5. Run the executable once to open the manager and continue to the configuration steps described below.

Steam can update the tool automatically according to the Steam client’s update behavior. Even with automatic updates enabled, keep a separate backup of each world before accepting a major game or server update.

Install without the Steam client using SteamCMD

SteamCMD is useful on a headless or minimally configured Windows machine. The anonymous account can download the dedicated-server app; no full Steam client installation is required.

  1. Download and extract SteamCMD into a directory with write permission, such as a dedicated server-management folder.
  2. Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
  3. Run the following command, replacing the installation path with the directory you want to use:

steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir "<directory>" +app_update 298740 +quit

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for SteamCMD to report that app ID 298740 has been updated or installed successfully.
  2. Open <InstallFolder>DedicatedServer64SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe to start the same Windows manager used by the Steam-tool installation.

Keep the command in a small update script if you plan to maintain the server manually. Re-running app_update 298740 updates the installed files; it does not replace the need to back up worlds or verify mod compatibility.

Complete the manager’s first-run configuration

The labels below describe the stock manager’s initial workflow. The same server and world settings are used whether you subsequently keep the process in the foreground or arrange for it to run as a service.

  1. Launch SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe.
  2. Select Local/Console. This starts the instance as a normal Windows process with its console output available to the operator.
  3. Choose Continue to server configuration.
  4. Enter a recognizable server name. Include the purpose or community name rather than relying on the default, especially if several instances share the same machine.
  5. Choose or create the world that the server should load and set the world name.
  6. Review the available session settings. Set the rules, progression, inventory and assembler options, limits, and other gameplay controls to match the community’s expectations. Change only a few related settings at a time so that a later problem is easy to associate with a change.
  7. Configure the server visibility and access controls appropriate to your audience. A private test world should not be exposed publicly while you are still checking the installation.
  8. Choose Save & start. The manager writes the configuration and launches the server using the selected world.

For a first launch, watch the console until world loading finishes and the process remains stable. Join from a separate game client when possible; testing from another device confirms that the server is reachable rather than merely running locally.

Where saves and logs are stored

The file layout depends on how the server was installed, which matters when you schedule backups or migrate to another machine.

Installation method Documented location Operational implication
Steam tool %appdata%SpaceEngineersDedicated Back up this directory’s world and configuration data, along with any files you deliberately keep elsewhere.
SteamCMD The installation’s TempContent area Inspect the TempContent tree under the chosen install directory and identify the active save and log subdirectories before writing backup scripts.

Do not assume that copying only the executable directory captures a Steam installation’s worlds. Likewise, do not hard-code a Steam-style AppData path for a SteamCMD deployment. Confirm the active location by creating a clearly named test world, saving it, and checking which directory receives the new files.

Networking a public server safely

A static public IP is recommended for a public server because players’ favorites and history entries are associated with the server’s IP address. If your internet provider changes the address, players may need to find and save the server again.

Prepare the Windows host

  • Give the server machine a stable address on the local network, preferably through a DHCP reservation on the router.
  • Allow the dedicated-server executable through Windows Firewall only on the network profiles you actually use.
  • Keep Windows and the .NET and Visual C++ runtimes patched, then reboot during a planned maintenance window.
  • Run a private connection test before publishing the address. Confirm that the world loads and that a second client can join and leave cleanly.

Configure the router or upstream firewall

The current primary requirements material does not provide a verified port-forwarding table. Do not copy a port number from an old forum post and assume it is current. Instead, consult the current official Space Engineers networking documentation or your hosting provider for the required transport, port, and any platform-specific rules. Forward only the documented service port to the server’s reserved local address.

Check bandwidth and reachability

Keen lists 5 Mbps in the server requirements. Treat that as a published baseline rather than a guarantee for every population or mod set. Monitor the connection while several players are active; upload saturation, bufferbloat, or an unstable upstream link can produce lag even when CPU usage is low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

World, mod, and configuration maintenance

Use a staged change process

  1. Stop the server cleanly before changing world settings, removing mods, or replacing server files.
  2. Copy the current world save to a dated backup directory.
  3. Apply one logical change, such as a mod update or a group of related session settings.
  4. Start the server and inspect the console for load errors or repeated warnings.
  5. Join with a test account, verify spawning and key systems, and only then announce the change to players.

Mods can add download time, memory pressure, and compatibility risk. Keep a written list of enabled mods and their order, and preserve the previous working list with the corresponding world backup. If a mod update breaks loading, stop the instance, restore the last known-good save and mod set, and test the suspect item separately rather than repeatedly starting the damaged world.

Back up before updates

Back up world saves before major server updates and before significant mod changes. Retain more than one generation so that a corruption event discovered days later does not overwrite your only usable copy. Store at least one copy outside the server machine; a backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure or ransomware.

Automatic and manual updates

Steam installations may receive updates automatically through Steam. The manager also exposes maintenance controls for automatic or manual updates, allowing an operator to choose whether updates happen on the server’s schedule or only after a deliberate check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When automatic updates are convenient

  • A small private server where a short maintenance interruption is acceptable.
  • An operator who can monitor the machine after an update and restore a backup if required.
  • A setup with a dependable out-of-band backup and a documented rollback procedure.

When manual updates are safer

  • A public community with scheduled events or players who need predictable availability.
  • A heavily modded world where every update must be checked for compatibility.
  • A server that requires a maintenance notice, staged testing, or approval from several administrators.

For a manual SteamCMD workflow, run the app-update command during the maintenance window, verify the downloaded build, and start the server only after the backup is complete. Never treat a successful file download as proof that the existing world and mods are compatible.

What Torch adds

Torch is optional third-party software, not a prerequisite for the stock dedicated server. Its project README describes it as the successor to SE Server Extender and as a toolset for keeping servers running smoothly. Torch is most useful when administrators need capabilities beyond the standard manager, such as:

  • Real-time entity or grid administration.
  • An extensible plugin system.
  • Automation and administrative commands.
  • Monitoring and live operational controls.

Install Torch only after the unmodified dedicated server works. Verify that the Torch release and every plugin support the current Space Engineers build before putting them on a production world. Keep the stock server files, Torch files, plugins, and world backup identifiable and separate enough that you can remove the optional layer during troubleshooting.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting is attractive when you want direct control over files, settings, worlds, and mods. Renting a managed server shifts much of the routine infrastructure work to a provider. The right choice depends less on the installation command than on who will respond when the machine needs an update, loses connectivity, or runs out of storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Self-hosted Windows server Managed host
Platform Your own Windows PC or rented Windows machine. The provider’s supported platform and control panel; confirm PC or Xbox support before ordering.
Control Direct access to executable files, saves, logs, configuration, and network rules. Access depends on the provider’s panel, file tools, and policies.
Setup time You install prerequisites, the server tool, firewall rules, and backups. The provider usually supplies a preconfigured service, reducing initial setup.
Maintenance You handle Windows, runtimes, updates, monitoring, and recovery. The provider may handle host maintenance; confirm exactly what is included.
Updates You choose automatic or manual updates through Steam or the manager. Update timing and rollback options vary by provider.
Backups You design, test, and store your own backup policy. Check backup frequency, retention, download access, and restoration fees.
Mods and plugins Maximum flexibility, including Torch, subject to your own compatibility testing. Check mod limits, upload tools, plugin policy, and whether custom server software is allowed.
Uptime Depends on your power, ISP, hardware, and monitoring. Usually backed by a datacenter and service-level processes, but read the actual uptime terms.
Support Your own troubleshooting and community knowledge. Support quality and response times depend on the contract.
Location and latency You choose the machine and internet connection. Choose a region near the player majority and verify available locations before purchase.
Recurring cost Uses existing hardware but incurs electricity, bandwidth, maintenance, and replacement costs. A predictable recurring fee; current pricing and included resources vary and must be checked before ordering.

Keen Software House identifies GTX Gaming as its official PC server host and Nitrado as its official Xbox server host. That designation does not remove the need to compare player capacity, mod support, backup policy, update handling, geography, support, uptime terms, and total recurring cost for your particular community.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area Action
The executable will not start. Missing prerequisite or blocked file. Confirm Windows, .NET Framework 4.8 or newer, and the Visual C++ redistributables. Check Windows event logs and security software quarantine records.
The manager opens but the world does not load. Save corruption, incompatible update, or mod failure. Stop the process, restore the last known-good save and mod list, then test the stock server before reintroducing optional content.
Players on the same LAN can join, but internet players cannot. Firewall, router forwarding, or changing public IP. Verify the host’s local address, firewall rule, router forwarding, and current public address. Use the current official networking instructions for the required port.
The server appears to vanish from favorites. Public IP changed. Use a static public IP where possible, or tell players the new address and have them refresh the saved entry.
Performance degrades as the world grows. CPU, memory, storage, entity load, or network saturation. Check server resource usage and console warnings, reduce unnecessary simulation load, review mods, and compare the machine with the published recommended specification.
An update starts but players report errors. Build and mod mismatch. Stop the server, preserve logs, verify the server build and mod versions, and roll back to the pre-update backup if the community cannot join.
SteamCMD reports an installation problem. Path permissions, disk space, or a stale SteamCMD session. Use a writable install directory, confirm free space, close other SteamCMD processes, and rerun the app-update command.

A practical operating checklist

  • Before opening to players: complete a second-device connection test, confirm the world and rules, and verify that the firewall and router expose only the required service.
  • Before every major update: stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration, record the current build and mod list, and announce the maintenance window.
  • Weekly: check disk space, review logs for repeated errors, test that backups can actually be opened, and inspect CPU, memory, and bandwidth trends.
  • After a failure: preserve logs before deleting or reinstalling files, identify the last known-good world, and change one variable at a time during recovery.
  • Before adding Torch or a plugin: verify compatibility with the current game build and keep a stock-server rollback path.

Which setup should you choose?

Choose self-hosting when control matters most

Run the Windows dedicated server yourself if you already have suitable hardware, can provide a stable connection, and want complete control over saves, settings, mods, Torch, and update timing. Budget time for patching, firewall administration, backups, monitoring, and recovery; those responsibilities remain yours.

Choose managed hosting when availability matters most

Use a managed provider when you need a server online without maintaining Windows, when your home connection is unreliable, or when no administrator is available to respond to failures. Before committing, verify the supported platform, player slots, mod and plugin policy, backup restoration process, update controls, datacenter region, support hours, uptime terms, and the full recurring price.

For most first-time operators, the safest sequence is to install the stock server, create and test one world, establish backups, and only then add public networking or Torch. That order isolates installation problems from network problems and keeps optional administration tools from obscuring a basic server failure.
