If your Space Engineers dedicated server is running but missing from the Servers tab, first select the browser icon that matches its configured network type: Steam for a Steam server or EOS for an EOS server. Then check Join Game > LAN, History and Favorites. Use Direct Connect with the public IP address and port shown for the LAN entry. That test tells you whether the server is unreachable or simply absent from the public browser.

The other frequent causes are a private visibility setting, a Steam-group restriction, blocked UDP traffic, incorrect port forwarding, a host-firewall rule, conflicting network interfaces, or client/server interference from mods, VPN software, antivirus or custom launch options.

What the symptom actually means
A dedicated server can be fully started and still be absent from the public browser. “Not showing up” is not one failure state; it usually falls into one of these categories:

Work through the checks in order. Do not change several unrelated settings at once; a controlled test makes it clear which change fixed the problem.

1. Confirm that the dedicated-server instance is really running
On the host computer, start SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. In Dedicated Server Manager, choose Local/Console, configure the instance, enter both a server name and a world name, and select Save & start. A configured profile that has not been started will not advertise a server.
If you are running the server as a service, administrator rights are required. Run the manager with the necessary Windows privileges, then verify that the intended profile—not an older profile with a different port or network type—is the one being started.

- Use a distinctive server name so you can recognize the correct entry.
- Confirm that a world is selected and saved.
- Check that the server process remains running after you click Save & start.
- Record the configured port and network type before changing anything else.
2. Make the server discoverable while troubleshooting
A private server is intentionally omitted from the public Servers list. Change the visibility to public for the test. Once discovery and connection work, you can restore a private setting if that is how you intend to run the game.
A Steam-group restriction can also limit visibility to members of that group. If a player is outside the group, the server may look missing even though it is operating normally. Remove the group restriction temporarily or test with an account that belongs to the configured group.
Visibility checks
- Set the server to Public, not Private.
- Remove a Steam-group-only restriction during diagnosis.
- Have the client refresh the browser after changing visibility.
- Search by the exact server name, including unusual punctuation or spacing.
3. Select the correct Steam or EOS browser icon
Space Engineers has separate discovery paths. The icon selected in the client must match the server’s configured NetworkType. A Steam server will not appear when the client is filtering for EOS, and an EOS server will not appear when the client is filtering for Steam.

On the client
- Open Join Game > Servers.
- Select the Steam icon if the server is configured for Steam.
- Select the EOS icon if the server is configured for EOS.
- Refresh the list and search again by the exact server name.
Keen Software House specifically identifies this icon mismatch as a reason a running server does not appear. Treat Steam and EOS as alternatives for a given test; do not assume that selecting both will make a mismatched configuration visible.
Check the configured network type
Open the dedicated-server configuration file at AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineersDedicatedSpaceEngineersDedicated.cfg. In Steam mode, Keen’s guidance is to verify a value such as:
<NetworkType>Steam</NetworkType>Only one network mode should be enabled for the instance. If the file says Steam, use the Steam icon in the client. If it says EOS, use EOS. Save the configuration, restart the server, and then repeat the browser test.
Try another network interface
A host with multiple adapters—such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a virtual adapter or a VPN adapter—can advertise through the wrong interface. In Dedicated Server Manager, select a different available interface, save, restart the instance and test again. Disconnecting a VPN during this test removes another possible source of interface selection errors.
4. Verify the UDP port, router forwarding and host firewall
Space Engineers communicates over UDP. The documented default listen port is 27016/UDP. If you selected a custom server port, use that value instead of 27016 everywhere: in the server configuration, the router rule, the Windows firewall rule and the address used for Direct Connect.

Configuration values to verify
In SpaceEngineersDedicated.cfg, Keen’s Steam-mode guidance calls out these values:

The number 8766 is a Steam configuration value, not a replacement for the server’s documented default listen port. Do not forward a random range “just in case”; start with the actual configured server port and expand only if your own network design requires it.
Router port-forwarding checklist
- Give the server computer a stable address on your local network, such as a DHCP reservation.
- Create an incoming UDP forwarding rule for
27016, or for the customServerPort. - Point that rule to the server computer’s local IP address.
- Save the router configuration and restart the server if the router requires it.
- Check that you are testing the current public IP address, not an old address from before a reconnect.
Host-firewall checklist
- Allow the dedicated-server executable through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Create or verify an inbound rule for the configured UDP server port.
- Apply the rule to the network profile the host is actually using.
- If security software has its own network controls, check those separately.
Port forwarding and firewall allowance are separate requirements. A router rule cannot help if the host firewall drops the packet, and a firewall exception cannot help if the router never forwards the packet to the server computer.
5. Use Direct Connect to separate listing from reachability
Direct Connect is the fastest way to determine whether the server is merely missing from the browser or cannot be reached at all.

- Hover over the server entry to reveal its public IP address and port.
- Give that address and port to the other player, or enter them in Direct Connect.
- Attempt the connection without relying on the public Servers list.
Interpret the result
- Direct Connect succeeds, but Servers is empty: concentrate on the Steam/EOS icon, public/private visibility, Steam-group restrictions and browser filtering. The server is reachable; discovery is the remaining problem.
- Direct Connect fails from outside your network, but works on the same LAN: concentrate on UDP forwarding, the public IP, carrier-grade NAT, router configuration and the host firewall.
- Direct Connect fails even on the same LAN: return to the process, configuration, interface, firewall and clean-test steps. Do not treat this as a browser-only problem.
For an external test, the joining player should be outside the host’s home network. Testing the public address from inside the same network can be affected by a router’s lack of NAT loopback and may produce a misleading failure.

6. Run one clean connection test
Keen’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing variables temporarily. Start the server once with no mods enabled and without custom launch options on either the server or the client. Also disconnect VPNs and temporarily disable antivirus or firewall components only long enough to identify interference.
- Back up or note the current mod list and launch options.
- Disable all server mods and custom server launch options.
- Use an unmodified client with no custom launch options.
- Disconnect VPN software on the host and joining client.
- Temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall filtering for the test, if your security policy permits it.
- Restart the server and client, then try Direct Connect and the browser again.
- Re-enable protection immediately after the test.
- Add mods, launch options and security exceptions back one at a time until the failure returns.
This is an isolation procedure, not a recommendation to operate permanently without security controls. If the clean test works, the last variable restored is the likely cause and should receive a targeted exception or configuration change.
7. Same-machine, LAN and no-Steam scenarios
Players on the same physical network
For a LAN test, every player must actually be on the same local network. A VPN can place a computer on a different virtual network even when everyone is in the same building. Disconnect active VPN connections on both the host and clients, then check Join Game > LAN again.
If LAN discovery works but the public browser does not, that points toward visibility, network-mode filtering or Internet-side configuration rather than a failure to start the world.
Running the manager without Steam logged in
Keen states that the Dedicated Server Manager executable can be run as administrator from the DedicatedServer64 folder without starting the Steam client. This is useful for a machine intended only to host the server. It does not remove the need to configure the server’s network mode, ports, visibility and firewall correctly.

Hosting and playing on one computer
When the host and player use the same machine, test the server as a separate process and use the normal client discovery path. Avoid judging Internet reachability from a loopback or same-machine test; a successful local connection does not prove that router forwarding works for outside players.
8. A complete troubleshooting order
Use this order when you want a single repeatable checklist rather than separate diagnosis branches:
- Start
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exethrough Dedicated Server Manager using Local/Console; enter a server name and world name, then select Save & start. - Confirm the instance is public and not limited to a Steam group.
- Read
NetworkTypeinSpaceEngineersDedicated.cfgand select the matching Steam or EOS icon in Join Game > Servers. - If multiple adapters exist, select the intended interface in Dedicated Server Manager and restart.
- Verify
ServerPort; use UDP 27016 unless you deliberately configured another port. CheckSteamPort8766 for a Steam configuration or the custom value you saved. - Forward that UDP server port to the host’s local IP and allow it through the host firewall.
- Use Join Game > LAN to obtain the public address and try Direct Connect.
- Run a no-mod, no-custom-launch-option test with VPN, antivirus and firewall variables isolated.
- Restore protections and reintroduce custom settings one at a time.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: spending time changing router settings when the client is simply filtering for EOS while the server is configured for Steam, or trying to solve a private-server visibility rule with port forwarding.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
If you cannot control the router or do not want to maintain a Windows host, a managed game-server provider can remove some infrastructure work. It cannot remove every game-side decision: you still need to select the correct Steam/EOS path, configure visibility and keep clients compatible with the server.

Keen’s official PC-server documentation names GTX Gaming as a host option. Treat provider regions, prices, backup policies, mod limits and current partner terms as details to verify directly before ordering; they are not established by the server-discovery instructions above.

- Using the wrong icon: Steam and EOS are separate browser filters. Match the icon to
NetworkType. - Testing a private server in the public list: private instances are deliberately omitted.
- Forwarding TCP instead of UDP: the documented game protocol and default listen port are UDP 27016.
- Forwarding the port to the wrong computer: a changing local IP can silently invalidate an otherwise correct rule.
- Opening the router but not the host firewall: both layers must permit the traffic.
- Changing mods and network settings together: a clean test with variables isolated gives you a usable cause-and-effect signal.
- Assuming LAN success proves Internet access: LAN discovery does not test the router’s public forwarding path.
- Assuming a browser failure proves a connection failure: Direct Connect distinguishes listing from reachability.
- Leaving VPN or security software disabled: re-enable protections after the isolation test and create a narrow exception if needed.
When to stop changing settings
If the server is public, the client icon matches the configured network type, Direct Connect works, and outside players can join, the original browser symptom is a discovery or filter issue rather than a server failure. At that point, keep the working configuration, document the selected interface and ports, and change one setting at a time if you want to restore a restriction or add mods.
If Direct Connect fails from outside while LAN works, focus exclusively on the external path: public IP, UDP forwarding, host firewall and any upstream NAT or ISP limitation. If Direct Connect fails everywhere, return to the startup and clean-test steps instead of repeatedly refreshing the browser.
