Experimental mode is a server-side opt-in in Space Engineers. A host enables it for a world, saves the configuration, and restarts the server. In Update 1.206, the three features historically bundled into Experimental mode became separate world settings and default to off: Share Inertia Tensor, Unsafe Piston Impulses, and the unsafe rotor-torque/impulse option. Mods no longer require Experimental mode. Enable the mode only when your world needs one of these physics options or when your platform requires it for visibility.

What Experimental mode does on a dedicated server
Experimental mode is not a general “mods enabled” switch. It is a permission layer for physics and other world options that Keen considers experimental. The setting applies to the server world, so every connected player uses the same rules. Clients cannot safely opt themselves in to a different physics configuration.

Since Update 1.206, code-named “Fieldwork,” the three historically bundled options can be selected individually. A newly configured world normally has all three disabled. A server can therefore run with Experimental mode available while leaving every experimental physics option off, or it can enable only the option needed by a particular build.
There is no published adoption rate or reliable performance benchmark for Experimental mode. Treat it as a compatibility decision for your specific grid, population and hardware rather than as a guaranteed performance upgrade.

The naming difference for the rotor setting matters when you edit a configuration file: use the XML key EnableUnsafeRotorTorques where that key is supported, but expect the in-game label to say “Unsafe Rotor Impulses” or similar. Labels can change between patches.
Share Inertia Tensor has a documentation conflict. The official wiki describes it as having moved into the safe World Settings in spring 2025, while the Update 1.206 announcement lists it with the experimental settings. The practical, current-safe statement is that it is off by default and may require the experimental capability on your server. Check the setting in the build you are running instead of relying on either label.
Do mods require Experimental mode?
No. The Update 1.206 Fieldwork notes state that mods no longer require Experimental mode. A player who wants a modded dedicated server can leave Experimental mode off unless the world also needs Share Inertia Tensor, unsafe piston impulses, unsafe rotor impulses, or another option that explicitly requests it.
- For ordinary script and content mods, install and enable the mods through the server’s normal world or mod configuration.
- Do not turn on unsafe physics settings merely because a mod is present.
- If a mod author documents a specific physics dependency, follow that dependency and test it on a copy of the world first.
In-game scripts are a separate concern from Workshop mods. One third-party host guide claims that enabling scripts or using high player counts can force Experimental mode on. That is not confirmed by Keen’s documentation, so verify the actual server state after the world starts rather than assuming the guide’s rule applies to every build.
How to turn on Experimental mode on a hosted server
The exact control-panel wording differs by provider, but a current third-party hosting guide uses this sequence. It is the safest documented procedure for a managed server:

- Stop the server if your host requires a stopped instance for configuration changes.
- Open the server control panel and select Settings.
- Find the Experimental mode switch or checkbox and enable it.
- Save or apply the configuration.
- Restart the server so the world loads with the new setting.
- Join the world as an administrator and open the world or server settings to confirm which experimental options are actually enabled.
The host guide does not establish a universal menu path for every provider, and the exact self-hosted procedure was not verified against Keen documentation. Do not assume that a checkbox on one host has the same name or location on another.

Choose the individual options after enabling the capability
Experimental mode and the three physics switches are related but not identical. After the restart, inspect the world settings and enable only the option your design needs. Leave Share Inertia Tensor, Unsafe Piston Impulses and the unsafe rotor option off unless you have a reason to test them.
Back up before changing physics
Make a manual copy of the world save before activating an unsafe option. Test the changed world with the largest mechanical grids, moving doors, pistons, rotors and connectors that players use. A backup gives you a recovery path if the simulation becomes unstable or the server stops responding.
Self-hosted dedicated servers: what is and is not confirmed
A self-hosted installation still uses the same world-level concepts, but the exact file location, launch method and administration interface depend on how you installed the dedicated server. The commonly repeated SteamCMD application ID and step-by-step file paths have not been confirmed against an official Keen page for this guidance, so they should not be treated as authoritative instructions.
Use the settings exposed by your installed server build first. If you edit XML, preserve a backup, keep the Boolean values as true or false, and change only keys documented for your patch. For the three 1.206 settings, the documented keys are EnableShareInertiaTensor, EnableUnsafePistonImpulses and EnableUnsafeRotorTorques. A malformed XML file or a key that your build does not recognise can prevent the world from loading.

After editing, start the server and verify the loaded world settings in game. A file that saved successfully is not proof that the running instance accepted every value.
When Experimental mode can enable itself
Keen’s 1.206 announcement notes that Experimental mode can switch on or off automatically according to world settings and, in some cases, server hardware. This means a server’s effective state may not match a checkbox you remember changing in a previous session.
Because a third-party claim about player-count and script-based forcing is not official, use observation rather than a fixed threshold:
- Record the mode and individual physics settings before a restart.
- Restart and check them again after the world loads.
- Repeat after changing player capacity, scripts or major mechanical builds.
- Keep a written change log so you can identify which setting preceded a physics problem.
Forum reports that settings reset after every restart are unverified. If you see that behaviour, treat it as a configuration or host-panel issue, capture the setting state before and after the restart, and ask the host for logs rather than assuming resets are an intended feature.

On consoles, an Experimental dedicated server is not visible in the server browser while it is in safe mode. Enabling Experimental mode makes the server visible to console players. This is a discovery rule, not proof that a particular physics option is active; check the individual world settings as well.

PC players may still connect through direct methods allowed by the server, but a console community that cannot find the server should verify the mode first. If the server is visible but a piston or rotor build behaves differently, visibility and physics configuration are separate troubleshooting steps.
What the three options mean for builders
Share Inertia Tensor
Sharing inertia can help a connected mechanical assembly remain stable without adding extra mass. That can be useful for compact doors, hinges or articulated tools where ballast would be impractical. It is not universally beneficial: the wiki warns that the wrong block combination can create persistent clanging or stop a mechanical block from moving. In the worst case, physics work can consume so much simulation time that the server appears frozen. The documented recovery is to quit, restart and switch the mode or setting off.

Unsafe Piston Impulses
This option changes how piston impulses are handled and is intended for designs that specifically need the experimental behaviour. Test extension speed, travel limits, collisions and attached subgrids under load. A design that works in an empty test world may behave differently when several players operate it simultaneously.
Unsafe rotor impulses or torques
Rotor assemblies transfer force through a rotating joint, so a small change can propagate through an entire grid. Test rotor limits, locking behaviour, attached landing gear and nearby armor. Because the UI wording and XML key differ in the documentation, confirm both the visible label and the actual loaded value after saving.
A practical enablement checklist
- Identify the exact feature required; “mods” alone is not a reason.
- Confirm the server and client are on a compatible current patch.
- Back up the world and record current settings.
- Enable Experimental mode in the host panel, or use the documented settings interface for your self-hosted build.
- Restart and verify the mode after startup.
- Enable one individual physics option at a time.
- Test the largest mechanical grids before inviting the full player group.
- Monitor simulation behaviour and revert the last change if clanging, stalled joints or severe slowdown appears.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server does not appear in the console browser
Check that Experimental mode is enabled and that the server completed a restart. Safe-mode console servers are hidden from the browser. If the mode is enabled but visibility is still missing, verify the world loaded and ask the host to check its current build and logs.

A mod will not load
Do not assume Experimental mode is the fix. Mods no longer require it under the 1.206 changes. Check the mod’s dependency list, world subscription state, load order and client/server version compatibility first.
A piston or rotor assembly freezes the simulation
Stop operating the assembly, restart the server and disable the last unsafe option you changed. If Share Inertia Tensor is enabled, test with it off as well; the wiki specifically warns that unsuitable combinations can halt mechanical movement or cause a severe slowdown. Restore the backup if the save remains unstable.
Settings appear different after restart
Compare the saved control-panel values with the values shown in the running world. Automatic enabling can depend on world settings or hardware, and reports of blanket resets are not verified. Preserve screenshots or logs before contacting the host.
Version scope
The official wiki version history lists Update 1.209 in May 2026 and Update 1.210, “Prosperity,” in July 2026. The available change summaries do not establish whether either update changed Experimental mode. Re-check the current patch notes and in-game labels before publishing a production server configuration, especially when relying on the rotor name or Share Inertia Tensor’s safe-versus-experimental classification.
