Start with the server log—especially workshop_log.txt—then work through the checks below in order.

Stop the server before deleting Workshop files, manifests or caches. Keep the complete log, the world name and every numeric Workshop ID; those details are what a mod author or Keen support needs to reproduce the failure.

Repeatedly restarting a server rarely repairs a failed Workshop download and can overwrite the evidence you need. Stop the dedicated server, save the complete log, and classify the symptom before changing files.
Search the log for these signatures
Unable to download modsork_EResultTimeout: usually a Workshop, network, account, cache or firewall problem.Mod failed: the downloaded content may be incomplete, incompatible with the current game build, or unable to load one of its files.Reference issue detected: a dependency, definition reference or load-order problem.ModPath file doesn't exist: a missing or stale local file, often after an update or rename.- XML parsing, definition or compile exceptions: malformed content, a script problem or an incompatibility with the current build.
- A numeric Workshop ID near the error: record it exactly; it identifies the mod that failed.
The normal server log shows startup and loading errors. workshop_log.txt is particularly useful when the server cannot download a mod because it records Workshop operations and the relevant IDs. Save the whole relevant block rather than one isolated line.

2. Confirm the loaded world actually enables the mod
A Steam subscription only makes a mod available to the account. It does not add that mod to a world. The server loads the mod list stored in the specific save it opens.
- Stop the server and identify the exact world or save configured for startup.
- Open that save in Space Engineers.
- Choose World Settings > Mods.
- Verify that the intended mod appears in the active list, not merely in your Steam Workshop subscriptions.
- Save the world, close it, and start the server with that same save.
Dependencies shown by the game are normally added automatically. If a dependency is missing from the world list or the log reports a reference issue, remove and re-add the parent mod so the game can resolve its declared dependencies, then check the saved list again.

When the mod is listed but has no visible effect
Check that the server is loading the world you edited; editing one save while the server starts another produces the same symptom as an uninstalled mod. If the correct world is active, continue with the service/ID check and conflict isolation below. A mod can load successfully yet appear to do nothing when another mod replaces the same definition.
3. Check the service, Workshop ID and network type
Each mod entry identifies both a service and an ID. Support documentation describes the formats as Steam:id and mod.io:id. Confirm that the entry uses the service where the content actually exists and that the numeric ID is correct.
Steam Workshop worlds
- In the world’s mod list or server configuration, verify the entry is
Steam:followed by the intended numeric Workshop ID. - Compare that number with the ID shown in the mod’s Workshop address or with the ID printed in the server log.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete entries left by a renamed mod, then save the world.
EOS versus Steam
A modded server can fail before loading when the world expects Steam Workshop content but the server is configured for EOS. In the server settings, open Network Type and set it to Steam for a Steam-based world. A Keen support case documents a server that would not start until its defaulted EOS setting was changed to Steam. Restart only after saving the setting.

Do not change network type as a blind permanent fix for every server. Make the setting match the service used by the world and its clients; switching services without matching IDs can create a different failure.

The account that subscribed to the mods must remain active and subscribed when the dedicated client attempts to download them. A server may show a subscription on one Steam account while the dedicated process is authenticated to another.
- Sign in to the Steam account used for the subscriptions.
- Confirm that every required mod still shows as subscribed.
- Make sure Steam has not switched to a different account or lost the login session.
- Close any running
SpaceEngineersDedicatedsession that Steam left open. A lingering process can prevent Steam from updating the dedicated client or Workshop files. - After Steam finishes updating, start the dedicated server again and watch the first download attempt in the log.
If the account cannot access a mod, clearing files on the server will not solve the authorization problem; restore the correct Steam session first.
5. Repair a failed or timed-out Workshop download
Use this procedure for Unable to download mods, k_EResultTimeout, a zero-byte or incomplete mod directory, or a download that repeatedly stops at the same ID.
- Stop the dedicated server. Do not remove files while the server or Steam is writing them.
- Navigate to the Workshop content directory for Space Engineers:
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850. - Find the subdirectory whose name is the affected numeric Workshop ID and delete only that directory.
- Check the firewall and antivirus rules. Allow
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exeto communicate, and ensure the server’s network path permits the default server port,27016, unless you deliberately configured another port. - Start the server and monitor
workshop_log.txtfor a fresh download and extraction of the ID.
Deleting the individual ID directory is a targeted reset. If the same mod fails after a clean download, the cause may be an account, network, incompatible build or mod-side problem rather than stale files.

Replace the dedicated server’s Steam client DLLs
The dedicated-server troubleshooting guidance documents replacing these three files in the DedicatedServer64 directory when Steam integration is damaged:
steamclient64.dlltier0_s64.dllvstdlib_s64.dll
Obtain matching copies through the supported Steam client/server installation process and replace them only while the server is stopped. Mismatched DLL versions can create new startup errors, so do not copy arbitrary files from another game or computer.
Rebuild the Workshop manifest as a last resort
If individual cache repairs do not work, stop the server and delete appworkshop_244850.acf so Steam can rebuild the Workshop manifest. This is a broad reset: back up the server configuration and note the active world and mod IDs first. The manifest contains subscription state and download metadata; rebuilding it can force more content to be checked or downloaded than the one mod that originally failed.
6. Use the error message to choose the next action

7. Isolate conflicts and dependency failures
Two mods can target the same game definition even when their filenames and Workshop pages are unrelated. The result may be a startup failure, a reference error or a mod that appears to load but has no effect.

- Make a backup copy of the world before changing its mod list.
- Create a test copy of the world with one known-good mod.
- Start the server and verify that the single mod works.
- Add the remaining mods in small groups, restarting between groups.
- When the failure returns, split that group in half and repeat until the conflicting mod or pair is identified.
Change load order only as a controlled experiment. Record the original order so you can restore it. If changing order does not remove the error, send the mod authors both Workshop links, the exact IDs, the world’s active list and the complete log block. Do not assume that a different order permanently resolves a definition conflict.

Dependencies that are not obvious
Read the dependency notices in the world’s mod screen and the Reference issue detected lines in the log. A dependency can be present but outdated, removed or associated with the wrong service. Re-add the parent mod to let the game repopulate normal dependencies, then verify that the resulting IDs are the ones the server downloads.
8. Redownload corrupted local content
Stale files, renamed files and leftovers from an update can break complex script mods even when the Workshop subscription is valid. Symptoms include ModPath file doesn't exist, XML parsing failures or compile exceptions that persist after a normal restart.
- Stop the server.
- Delete the affected numeric directory under
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850. - Start Steam and allow the dedicated client to download the mod again.
- Start the server and inspect the new log for the same filename or exception.
If a clean redownload produces the identical error, preserve the new log and contact the mod author. Avoid manually editing or renaming files inside a Workshop mod; doing so can make the local copy differ from the author’s package and obscure the cause.

Xbox and PlayStation hosts cannot execute user code. A script mod that requires code running on the host therefore cannot operate on a console-hosted world, regardless of the subscription or mod list.
A PC dedicated server can support a script mod for console clients only when the script compiles and executes server-side. If the mod requires client-side script execution, console players will still fail to use it. For a console-hosted world, choose a no-script or server-independent alternative. For mixed-platform play, confirm the mod author explicitly supports server-side compilation before investing time in cache and load-order troubleshooting.

10. A clean-room recovery sequence
Use this complete sequence when several fixes have been attempted and the server state is uncertain.
- Stop the dedicated server and save the complete log plus
workshop_log.txt. - Write down the world name, active mod list and every numeric Workshop or mod.io ID.
- Open the exact world and confirm the mods under World Settings > Mods.
- Confirm each entry uses the correct
Steam:idormod.io:idservice. - Set Network Type to match that service; use Steam for Steam Workshop content.
- Verify the active Steam account is still subscribed and close any lingering
SpaceEngineersDedicatedprocess. - Test the world with one known-good mod.
- For a download error, delete only the affected ID directory under
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850, then retry. - Check firewall/antivirus access for
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exeand the configured server port, 27016 by default. - Add the remaining mods in small groups and identify conflicts by binary testing.
- Only after targeted repairs fail, back up configuration and rebuild
appworkshop_244850.acf. - If the clean-room test still fails, package the complete log,
workshop_log.txt, world name, service type and mod IDs for support.
11. Self-hosting versus managed hosting for mod troubleshooting
The failure points above determine how much access you need. A self-hosted dedicated server gives you direct control over the files, DLLs, Workshop cache, Steam/EOS setting, firewall and backups. That makes the targeted repairs possible, but you are responsible for updates and recovery.
A managed server can be easier when you do not want to maintain the operating system, but support quality depends on whether the provider exposes the same evidence and controls. Before moving a world, confirm that you can obtain the complete server log and workshop_log.txt, inspect or reset the Workshop cache, select Steam or EOS, restore backups and see which mod IDs are installed. Without those controls, a provider may only restart the instance and leave the underlying download or conflict unresolved.
12. What to send when escalation is necessary
Contact Keen support or the mod author after the controlled tests, not with a screenshot of one red line. Include:
- The complete dedicated-server log, or at least the entire startup/download block surrounding the failure.
workshop_log.txtwhen the error concerns downloading or timeouts.- The world name and whether the host is PC dedicated, Xbox or PlayStation.
- The network type (Steam or EOS) and the service prefix used by each mod.
- Every affected numeric Workshop or mod.io ID.
- The exact error text, such as
k_EResultTimeout,Reference issue detectedorModPath file doesn't exist. - Which single-mod and small-group tests succeeded or failed.
- Whether the affected cache directory was deleted and whether a clean download reproduced the problem.
This record lets the recipient distinguish an account or transport failure from a broken package, dependency issue, definition conflict or platform limitation.
