Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has seven playable classes: Tactical, Assault, Sniper, Vanguard, Bulwark, Heavy, and Techmarine. Perks have changed across updates, so there is no reliable way to treat an older online perk list as a current, complete inventory. This guide explains how to compare each class’s build choices and highlights the latest documented changes; confirm exact perk names, slots, and tooltips in the current in-game perk tree.
What changed in the latest documented perk update?
Patch 15.0, dated October 1, 2026, reworked Tactical to support more build directions, including two primary weapons, Gun Strikes, and close combat. The official notes describe these changes:
- Starting Class perk: Bolt Weapons penetrate one additional enemy, and Bolter Weapons deal 20% more damage on non-headshots.
- Passive Chambering: Replaced the prestige perk Exigency Charge. Any unequipped Ranged Weapon reloads automatically after 10 seconds.
- Kraken Penetrator Rounds: Moved from the skill tree into the starting Class perk.
- Armour Reinforcement: Took the vacated tree slot; non-finisher Gun Strikes restore one Armour Segment.
These are Tactical mechanics, not a promise that every loadout benefits equally. A Bolter-focused setup can make direct use of the starting perk’s weapon effects; a build emphasizing other ranged weapons or melee should weigh the remaining choices against its actual rotation. Read the current tooltips before spending points. Focus Entertainment’s Patch 15.0 notes provide the official change record.
How to compare perks across the seven classes
Instead of looking for a universal “best” perk list, start with what you want the build to do. Perk trees offer choices that can affect weapon damage, defense, armour, abilities, or squad utility, and the best fit depends on your weapons, role, mode, and the current version of the game.

- Embody the superhuman skill and brutality of a Space Marine. Unleash deadly abilities and devastating weaponry to obliterate the relentless Tyranid swarms. Defend the Imperium in spectacular third-person action in solo or co-op modes.
- Purge the relentless Tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign. Play solo or with up to 2 friends in 3 player co-op.
- Enjoy intense, gory and fast-paced third-person action with hundreds of enemies on screen, from the creators of blockbuster co-op shooter World War Z.
- Standard edition includes: Base game, Macragge’s Chosen DLC, with 3 unique cosmetics for your Bolt Rifle, Chainsword & Power Armour
- Ranged damage and flexibility: Check whether the perk benefits the weapons you actually equip, and whether its condition fits your firing habits. Tactical’s Patch 15.0 changes specifically support weapon flexibility.
- Melee pressure: Look for effects that reward your chosen melee weapon or attack pattern, rather than assuming a damage bonus applies to every attack.
- Survivability and armour recovery: Separate damage reduction from armour restoration. Check what triggers a recovery effect and whether it applies to you, teammates, or both.
- Ability or equipment uptime: Determine whether the benefit shortens a cooldown, alters an ability, or depends on a particular ability state.
- Team support: Note who receives the effect and any conditions or cooldowns; a squad benefit may be more valuable in coordinated play than in a build focused on personal damage.
These are comparison questions, not an official class ranking or a tested meta. Patch notes document mechanics, not player performance or pick rates.
What to consider for each class
The class roles below give you a starting point for evaluating the in-game tree. Except for the Tactical changes listed above and Techmarine’s official role description, they do not claim to inventory current perk names or effects. Select perks from the current tree that support your chosen weapons and role.

Tactical
Use Tactical’s tree to decide how much you want to lean into ranged damage, weapon flexibility, Gun Strikes, or close combat. The Patch 15.0 starting perk and Passive Chambering support some ranged setups, while Armour Reinforcement links non-finisher Gun Strikes to armour recovery. Consider how often your build can trigger that effect before treating it as a defensive cornerstone.
Assault
Assault builds invite a choice between emphasizing close-range pressure and adding survivability or squad value. Check the current tooltip conditions closely: a perk tied to a particular attack or weapon may not help a different melee setup. Historical perk figures should not be assumed current; Patch 8.0, for example, raised Winged Fury’s damage bonus from 40% to 100% at that time.

Sniper
For Sniper, compare perks by whether they reinforce the ranged weapons and combat rhythm you use, or instead help with defense and team contribution. Verify any weapon, target, or situational condition in the present tooltip rather than assuming an effect applies to all ranged damage.
Vanguard
Vanguard choices should be evaluated around the role you want the class to fill and the conditions attached to each defensive or offensive effect. Patch 8.0 increased Moving Target’s maximum ranged-damage reduction from 20% to 30%; that is a historical value, not confirmation of its current value or a recommendation for every build.

- Destroy the tyranid swarms. Defend humanity.
- Eliminate merciless tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign
- Experience thrilling, bloody and fast-paced third-person action with hundreds of opponents on screen
- Defend the Empire as a Space Marine in brutal and always replayable PvE missions for up to 3 players
Bulwark
Bulwark perk choices can affect personal durability and team support. Check whether an armour-related perk restores armour to you or your squad, how its trigger works, and its cooldown. Patch 8.0 reduced the cooldown on a team armour-restoration effect from 40 to 30 seconds and also changed perks to interact with Thunder Hammer Pommel Smash; consult today’s tree for current details.
Heavy
For Heavy, compare perks that strengthen your selected ranged approach with options that improve resilience or ability value. Patch 13.0 raised Coolant Reserve’s damage bonus from 15% to 50% at that time. Because that figure records a dated balance change, verify the current tooltip before building around it.

Techmarine
Game Director Dmitry Grigorenko described Techmarines as “specialists in crowd control and area defense” in Xbox Wire’s January 21, 2026 overview. Evaluate the tree for how well its current effects support controlling groups, defending space, and contributing to your team. Patch 13.0 raised Explosives Adept’s damage bonus from 35% to 50%, and Reinforced Position’s damage reduction from 25% to 30% and damage bonus from 15% to 20%; these are dated changes, not guaranteed current values. The class overview said Techmarine was available in Operations, Stratagems, Siege, and Eternal War, but not the Narrative Campaign, and described it as free for everyone at the time of that January 2026 preview. Check the current game for access terms and mode availability.

Perk trees have been revised repeatedly. Patch 6.0 said it reviewed every class’s perk tree, with most changes intended as buffs to support different playstyles. Later, Patch 8.0 changed perks across Bulwark, Tactical, Assault, Vanguard, and Sniper; Patch 13.0 discussed new mechanics for more interesting perk reworks and named Tactical, Vanguard, and Heavy as priorities at that time. Patch 15.0 then reworked Tactical again.
That history makes a scraped or older all-class inventory risky: a perk can move, change values, or be replaced. The official sources cited here document specific updates, but do not provide a single consolidated, current list of every perk across all seven classes. For historical context, see the official Patch 6.0 notes, Patch 8.0 notes, and Patch 13.0 notes.
How to choose and verify a build
- Pick your job first. Decide whether the build should focus on ranged output, melee pressure, staying power, ability use, or team support.
- Choose weapons and mode. A perk that suits one weapon or combat loop may be less useful with another. Consider the mode and difficulty you are playing; some effects depend on ability state or enemy tier.
- Read the whole tooltip. Check triggers, eligible targets, weapon restrictions, cooldowns, and whether an effect benefits you or teammates.
- Compare trade-offs within the tree. Favor perks whose conditions your build can meet reliably over bonuses that look larger but rarely activate for your setup.
- Recheck after balance updates. Compare the in-game tree with the latest official patch notes, especially if a build guide predates a class rework.
Patch 6.0’s balance review and the subsequent changes in Patches 8.0, 13.0, and 15.0 show why checking dates matters. Use the notes as a change log, then treat the live in-game tooltip as the final reference for the current perk name, slot, and effect.
