Choose No Man’s Sky if discovering an enormous variety of planets, playing across many platforms, and building bases with friends matter most. Choose Space Engineers if you want to design, pilot, repair, and destroy functional machinery in a physics-driven sandbox. Choose Empyrion – Galactic Survival if food, oxygen, mining, crafting, farming, and combat should create constant survival decisions.
There is no universal winner here. These games use the same broad vocabulary—space, planets, construction, exploration, survival—but their moment-to-moment priorities differ sharply. The right choice depends on which activity you want to repeat for dozens of hours.

You want a discovery-first journey
No Man’s Sky is the clearest starting point when the appeal is seeing unfamiliar planets, cataloging environments, gathering resources, and moving on to the next destination. Hello Games describes it as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” Its official materials emphasize hazardous planets, bases that can be built on any planet, multiplayer, and VR. That combination makes it the broadest fit for a player who wants a recognizable space-adventure rhythm rather than a tightly managed engineering project.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its procedural structure also changes the meaning of progression. You are not simply clearing a fixed map; you are repeatedly deciding whether to investigate another world, improve a base, or continue traveling. If your ideal session is “find a new place, collect what I need, and build a home there,” this is the most direct match.
You want machines to be the main character
Space Engineers is built around making devices work. Keen Software House characterizes it as a sandbox about engineering, construction, exploration, and survival in space and on planets. The developer’s own feature wording says the game should be about “the machinery you build,” not troops. That distinction is useful: the satisfaction comes from designing a vehicle, station, drilling rig, or planetary base and then seeing whether it performs under real physical constraints.
Objects use volumetric physics and can be assembled, disassembled, damaged, and destroyed. Survival mode adds realistic resource and inventory management, while creative mode lets you test concepts without the same scarcity pressure. Choose it when iteration, mechanical problem-solving, and accepting failure as part of design sound enjoyable.

Empyrion – Galactic Survival puts explicit bodily and logistical needs into the loop. Eleon Game Studios describes a combination of exploration, building, mining, survival, crafting, and combat across space and planets. Its survival materials identify oxygen and food as necessities; growing food aboard a mothership requires suitable equipment. The official description summarizes the intended mindset: “To survive in space and on alien planets, you must plan with ingenuity and caution.”
This makes Empyrion a strong fit if you want each expedition to involve preparation. You are not only asking where to go and what to build, but also whether you have enough supplies, processing capacity, and defensive capability to return safely.
How the three games differ in their core loops

This table describes the games’ stated design priorities, not a laboratory ranking. Official feature pages do not establish which title runs faster, has better accessibility, or is more stable on your particular hardware.
Building and engineering: decorative bases or functioning machines?
No Man’s Sky: build as part of exploration
Base building in No Man’s Sky is closely tied to the act of settling a planet. The official site highlights the ability to build bases across planets, so construction can serve as a home, a resource point, or a personal marker in a much larger journey. The game is a good fit if you want building to support discovery without requiring every component to behave like a real machine.

Ask yourself whether you would rather spend an hour improving a scenic outpost or debugging a vehicle’s power and control systems. If the first answer is more appealing, No Man’s Sky is likely the less demanding choice.
Space Engineers: construction as a systems problem
Space Engineers goes deeper into the consequences of construction. You design ships, stations, and planetary bases from components that can be assembled and disassembled. Drilling and harvesting feed the manufacturing chain, while damage and destruction can invalidate a design. A craft that looks impressive but lacks a workable layout, usable controls, or sufficient resources may fail when you try to operate it.
Creative mode is valuable for prototyping because it removes much of the gathering burden. Survival mode then tests whether the design can be built and maintained with limited materials and inventory capacity. This separation lets newcomers experiment first and add pressure later.
Empyrion: block construction connected to survival logistics
Empyrion combines block-built ships and facilities with the need to keep a settlement supplied. Its official overview names starships, small craft, stations, and planetary facilities, while the survival descriptions connect food production and oxygen to appropriate equipment. Construction therefore has a practical role: a base is not merely a visual project if it must support farming, storage, processing, and continued exploration.
Choose Empyrion when you want building decisions to answer survival questions such as where to place production, how to secure supplies, and how to prepare a vehicle for the next planet.
Survival pressure: how much management do you want?
Light-to-moderate pressure alongside exploration
No Man’s Sky presents survival as one part of a wider exploration package. You will still gather resources and deal with hazardous environments, but the headline experience remains movement through a broad galaxy and the freedom to establish bases in different locations. It suits players who want survival systems to create texture without turning every trip into a strict checklist.
Resource and inventory discipline
Space Engineers makes survival management feel like an engineering constraint. The official feature page describes realistic resource and inventory management and manual construction in survival. Materials must be obtained, moved, and allocated. A design that is possible in creative mode may be impractical when every component has a cost and every trip has carrying limits.

Explicit food and oxygen needs
Empyrion is the clearest choice for players who want basic needs to remain visible. Its survival page states that oxygen and food are necessary and warns that life in deep space quickly ends without them. Food production aboard a mothership requires suitable equipment, making preparation an infrastructure problem rather than a one-time pickup.
Before choosing it, decide how often you want to stop exploring to maintain supplies. If that interruption sounds like meaningful planning, Empyrion’s loop should feel coherent. If it sounds like busywork, No Man’s Sky may be a better fit.
Exploration, planets, and progression
No Man’s Sky: breadth and variety
The official description foregrounds a procedurally generated galaxy and hazardous planets. That makes variety the central promise: each destination is part of a much larger space, and base building can follow you from world to world. The game also supports multiplayer and VR, so exploration can be approached as a solo journey, a shared activity, or a headset-based experience depending on your platform.
Space Engineers: explore to support your designs
Exploration in Space Engineers is closely connected to gathering and construction. You explore space and planets to locate resources, establish bases, and test what your machinery can do. The game’s open-world structure gives you room to build, but the defining question is often practical: what location, material, or route will let the next project work?

Space Engineers
Keen Software House publishes platform-specific multiplayer figures: up to 16 players on PC and four on Xbox One X. Treat those numbers as qualifications for the documented platforms, not a universal cap for every current edition. Confirm the current multiplayer documentation and whether your intended setup uses a hosted server, a direct session, or another arrangement.

Empyrion – Galactic Survival
Steam lists Empyrion as a single-player game with online and LAN co-op, and its description also discusses player-versus-player play. That makes it flexible for private cooperative sessions or more competitive environments, but the exact server rules, player limits, and current support should be checked on the live listing before purchase.
For any of the three games, settle the technical questions before inviting friends: are all players on supported editions, does the chosen platform allow the intended cross-play arrangement, and will one person host or will you use a dedicated server?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prices, editions, and what can change
Prices and review aggregates are storefront data, not permanent qualities of a game. No Man’s Sky’s official press kit says prices can vary by platform and country. Steam showed Empyrion at a $19.99 base-game price when accessed in 2026, but that figure is region-dependent and may change with discounts, taxes, or edition changes.
Steam also showed Empyrion at 78% positive from 17,943 English reviews and 62% positive from 35 reviews in the last 30 days when accessed in 2026. Those counts and percentages move continuously; they should be treated as a snapshot rather than a lasting verdict. The available material does not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison of performance, player population, survival difficulty, or overall quality.

Before buying, verify four items on the current store page:
- The exact platform and edition, including whether a handheld or VR version is separate.
- Whether the multiplayer mode you want is online co-op, LAN, PvP, or a combination.
- The current price in your country, including taxes and any bundle or upgrade requirements.
- Recent system, server, and compatibility notes for your hardware.
A practical decision process
- Choose your dominant activity. Pick exploration, engineering, or survival management before comparing secondary features. If you cannot choose one, decide which activity you would still enjoy after the novelty of the first few hours fades.
- Set your acceptable complexity level. Choose No Man’s Sky for a more travel-oriented loop, Space Engineers for hands-on systems, or Empyrion for explicit needs and preparation. This is a preference decision, not a quality ranking.
- Check the platform before the feature list. Match your exact console, PC storefront, handheld, or VR headset to the current listing. No Man’s Sky has the broadest published platform range, but support details remain edition-specific.
- Define the multiplayer session. Decide whether you need co-op, LAN, PvP, cross-play, a particular player count, or a dedicated server. Space Engineers’ published figures differ between PC and Xbox One X, while Empyrion’s Steam listing distinguishes online and LAN co-op and discusses PvP.
- Decide how much survival interruption you enjoy. If food and oxygen checks sound engaging, Empyrion is the strongest match. If inventory and material movement are the challenge, Space Engineers is more appropriate. If hazards should sit beside discovery rather than dominate it, choose No Man’s Sky.
- Use the first session as a fit test. In No Man’s Sky, see whether planetary discovery and base placement keep you interested. In Space Engineers, build a small functional craft before attempting a large station. In Empyrion, test whether maintaining oxygen, food, and production feels purposeful rather than tedious.
Common choice mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by setting instead of loop
“Space game” covers three different experiences here. A player who wants a cinematic tour of strange planets may dislike the construction troubleshooting in Space Engineers. A player who wants to engineer a machine may find No Man’s Sky too focused on traveling between discoveries. Name the activity, not just the setting, when making your decision.
Assuming every building system works the same way
Base building in No Man’s Sky supports exploration and settlement. Space Engineers treats construction as a physical system whose parts can be damaged or destroyed. Empyrion uses block-built vessels and facilities connected to survival logistics. Screenshots of large bases do not reveal how much planning each game requires to make them useful.
Ignoring platform-specific multiplayer details
Published support is not a guarantee that every edition shares the same player cap or cross-play behavior. Check the current documentation for your platform and the platform your friends use. This is especially important when a group includes PC, console, handheld, or VR players.
Treating a storefront score as a design explanation
A moving percentage can tell you how a storefront audience is reacting at a particular moment, but it cannot explain whether the game’s central loop suits you. Use the score, if current, as context after you have matched the gameplay priorities.
