Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” is an announced Nintendo Switch 3D platformer in which the beat controls the stage as much as the soundtrack. Enemies, platforms, traps and city machinery move in musical patterns, so jumping, fighting and exploring become timing problems. Green Flamingo has announced worldwide digital distribution through Nintendo eShop, but neither the Switch announcement nor the current Steam listing gives a release date or release window.
A Windows/Linux demo is already listed by the developer. It presents the central idea clearly: bass hits can boost Spanky, snares can bounce him, horns can help him glide, and bat sonar can reveal secrets. The full game is advertised as a larger adventure set in the rhythm-controlled city of Metronopolis, although its feature counts remain plans described on the current store listing rather than independently verified final content.

What kind of game is Spanky “Bat-a-Swing”?
Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” is a rhythm-led platformer, not a conventional music game built around note highways, song charts or a separate performance mode. Its premise is that music is a physical rule of the world. The Steam description summarizes that idea as: “Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” is a platformer where music isn’t just part of the experience: it is the world.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat distinction matters. In an ordinary platformer, a soundtrack can set a mood while platforms and enemies follow fixed animation cycles. Here, those cycles are intended to line up with the music. A moving hazard may open on a beat, an enemy may attack in a repeating phrase, and a platform may carry Spanky only while its part of the arrangement is active. You are therefore reading both the level and the timing pattern at once.

The game draws on 1930s cartoon animation and electro-swing music. The visual reference suggests exaggerated poses, elastic movement and theatrical villains, while the electronic swing score supplies the pulse that drives traversal and combat. The developer’s demo page calls the city’s music “the metronome of the metropolis,” a useful description of the design rather than a promise that every encounter will have the same difficulty or timing.
How the rhythm mechanics affect movement and combat
Music controls the environment
According to the game descriptions, platforms, traps and other mechanisms move in sync with the score. The practical consequence is that a jump is not only a question of distance. You also need to decide when the surface will be present, when a hazard will be open and whether your landing will coincide with the next musical phrase.
The intended challenge is flexible timing. Spanky can ride the beat, using the movement of the level to gain momentum, or resist it and take actions outside the expected pattern. Following the rhythm should make some routes more efficient, while breaking timing can offer a way through when a player does not want to wait for a cycle. The available descriptions do not establish that every obstacle has two completely separate solutions, so treat “sync or resist” as the game’s core approach rather than a guarantee of alternate paths in every room.
Different instruments provide different actions
The developer’s demo page connects gameplay actions to parts of the arrangement:

- Bat sonar: use echolocation to search for secrets.
This instrument-based design gives the soundtrack a functional role. Instead of treating audio as a cue layered over a finished level, the game asks you to identify which sound is currently supplying movement or momentum. Players who have difficulty hearing a beat consistently may need to rely on visual animation and repeated patterns; the available material does not describe a dedicated visualizer or a full set of audio-accessibility options.
Combat is part of the same timing system
Fights are described as rhythm-driven rather than isolated arenas with conventional health-bar exchanges. Enemies move in musical patterns, which means an attack window can be tied to a beat or phrase. The result should feel closer to dancing around an arrangement than trading hits whenever a button is available. The “fight is a dance” idea is therefore literal: positioning, evasions and attacks are expected to align with the same timing that governs platforming.
The Switch announcement names echolocation and air-shaft mechanics alongside the rhythm systems. Echolocation is associated with finding hidden content, while air shafts suggest vertical movement through the city. The announcement also names several districts and bosses, but those descriptions are promotional material; they do not establish the exact movesets, stage lengths or difficulty of the finished encounters.

Setting, characters and named districts
The story takes place in Metronopolis, where Mayor Metrognome has imposed rhythm on the city. Spanky is an inventive bat who challenges the mayor’s forces. That premise explains why music reaches beyond the soundtrack: the city itself has been organized around a compulsory tempo, giving the platforming rules a story justification.

The Switch announcement identifies three districts:
- Morguetone
- Blue Vines
- Nove Nubla
It also names three main bosses: DJ Cobwebb, Maestro Bonobotti and Owlivia. The full-game listing describes a further final showdown. These names and locations come from the announcement and store descriptions, so spelling and details should be read as the currently advertised presentation rather than a complete account of the campaign’s narrative.
Advertised full-game scope
The current Steam listing presents the following planned scope. Because the game is unreleased, these are listed features, not a completed independent assessment.
| Feature | Current listing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Areas | 4 distinct areas | Advertised campaign structure; final layouts and contents are not independently verified. |
| Levels | 13 levels | Store-page count for the planned full game. |
| Characters | More than 20 hand-animated characters | Includes the game’s advertised cast, enemies and other characters; the listing does not provide a complete breakdown. |
| Bosses | 3 main bosses plus a final showdown | Matches the named-boss structure described in the announcement and listing. |
| Music | More than 25 original tracks | Planned soundtrack count; no final track list or duration is supplied. |
| Online features | Global leaderboards | Intended for fastest times and highest scores. |
| Secrets | Hidden collectibles and story secrets | Optional exploration content advertised for the campaign. |
| Music player | Built-in player for unlocked tracks | Tracks are intended to become available for listening after they are unlocked. |
The Switch announcement repeats the collectibles, secrets, leaderboards and music-player features. It also says leaderboards will cover fastest times and highest scores, suggesting that the game is meant to support both speed-focused routes and score-oriented replay. No ranking rules, online requirements or cross-platform leaderboard details have been stated.

Nintendo Switch release status
Nintendo Switch development has been announced, with worldwide digital release planned through Nintendo eShop. The announcement was reported on May 30, 2026, and did not include a date or window. The Steam page likewise lists the full game’s release date as “To be announced.” There is therefore no confirmed day, month or launch season to use when planning a purchase.
The evidence establishes a digital eShop version, not a confirmed cartridge edition. It also does not establish whether the Switch build will launch alongside the PC version, whether it will include every advertised feature at launch, or whether platform-specific control and performance options will differ. Those details need to come from a later official listing or release announcement.

Green Flamingo’s itch.io page lists a downloadable demo for Windows and Linux. The page names four input categories: keyboard, mouse, Xbox controller and PlayStation controller. It also lists subtitles. The language list on that demo page is German, English, Spanish (Castilian and Latin American), French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Chinese. Those are the languages listed for the itch.io page and should not be assumed to describe the eventual Switch version or every build.
How to use the demo as a preview
- Open the developer’s itch.io game page and choose the Windows or Linux download that matches your computer.
- Launch the demo with a controller or with keyboard and mouse. The page lists Xbox and PlayStation controllers as supported input types.
- Begin with the audio enabled. Listen for bass, snare and horn parts because each is tied to a different movement action in the demo description.
- Try one section while following the beat, then repeat it by deliberately resisting the timing. This shows how much of the route depends on synchronization rather than reflexes alone.
- Use bat sonar in areas that appear empty. The demo specifically presents echolocation as a way to find secrets.
- If controls feel late or a button is uncomfortable, open Settings and check the input options before judging the timing. The developer’s January 20, 2026 update notes an input-remapping overhaul and an input-delay recorder in Settings.
The developer’s devlog lists a build 0.2 update dated May 12, 2026. Since the demo is updated during development, behavior, controls and available content can change between builds. A demo result is consequently useful for understanding the rhythm concept, but it is not evidence of final Switch performance or final campaign size.

Kickstarter, preorder and buying cautions
The Kickstarter campaign ran from June 16 through July 7, 2026. Its campaign page reports €49,091 pledged against a €25,000 goal by 784 backers and says the page was last updated August 28, 2026. Those figures describe that campaign period; they are not sales figures for the finished game or proof of a launch date.
The campaign links to a Nejcraft Store collection titled for Spanky “Bat-a-Swing.” The accessible collection page exposed the collection heading but no item-level product details. That means the currently available evidence does not establish whether a physical cartridge exists, what an edition contains, which territories it serves, how much it costs, whether it is in stock or when it would ship. Treat any preorder claim as unconfirmed until a live product page states those terms.
Similarly, an announced Switch game should not be described as currently purchasable from a particular marketplace without an actual listing. The confirmed information is the planned Nintendo eShop release and the existence of the developer’s PC/Linux demo.

Who should keep an eye on it?
- Rhythm-game players: the beat is integrated into traversal and combat instead of being confined to a score chart.
- Platformer fans: the advertised structure includes secrets, collectibles, bosses and replayable score or time targets.
- Players who enjoy stylized animation: the presentation is explicitly inspired by 1930s cartoons and uses hand-animated characters.
- Players who need a confirmed launch date now: this is still a watch-list game, because neither Switch nor Steam has a dated release.
The strongest reason to try the project is its unusual interaction between music and level design. The strongest reason to wait before preordering is the amount of information still unsettled: release timing, final feature delivery, Switch-specific details and any physical format.
What is known, and what remains open
Known facts are limited but clear: the Switch version is announced for worldwide digital eShop distribution; the PC/Linux demo is available; the developer has documented controller, keyboard/mouse, subtitle and language support for that demo; and the current Steam listing advertises a four-area, 13-level game with more than 25 tracks, over 20 characters, bosses, secrets, leaderboards and a music player.
Still open are the Switch launch date, the relationship between the Switch and PC releases, final content counts, performance, online requirements, edition format and preorder terms. Until an official update answers those questions, the sensible way to approach Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” is as a promising rhythm-platformer in development, with a playable demo that can show whether its timing-based movement suits you.
