speak.dll is usually an old Miranda IM text-to-speech plugin, not a Windows component, so reinstalling or disabling the Miranda plugin is safer than downloading a replacement DLL. First identify which executable is requesting speak.dll, then repair that Miranda installation or remove the obsolete plugin reference.

speak.dll is associated with Miranda IM, an open-source Windows multiprotocol instant-messaging client. Its reported description is “Speak plugin for Miranda ICQ.” Miranda used plugins for optional features, and plugins were normally loaded from the application’s Plugins directory when Miranda started.

- A Microsoft Speech runtime file
- A DirectX component
- A graphics-driver file
- A general-purpose runtime required by games
- A file that should normally be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64
Public file records describe a 32-bit speak.dll associated with Miranda IM and report version and size information, but those details come from third-party indexes rather than a verified signed vendor release. Do not use those records as a reason to download the file.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting speak.dll
Do not begin by searching Windows folders for a replacement. The filename alone cannot prove which program is failing.
Check the error window
- Leave the error message open.
- Read the window title.
- Note whether the message appears immediately after Miranda IM launches.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Details tab.
- Look for a Miranda executable or the program that started immediately before the error.
- Right-click the likely process and choose Open file location if the process is still running.
If Miranda is not involved, stop and investigate the other application instead. A DLL from Miranda should not be copied into an unrelated program’s folder.
Search the expected Miranda directories
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder where Miranda IM or Miranda NG is installed.
- Look for a folder named
Plugins. - Search that folder for
speak.dll. - Also check whether more than one Miranda installation exists, such as an old folder and a newer folder.
If speak.dll is absent from the expected Plugins directory, the installation may be incomplete. If it exists but the error continues, the problem may be a missing dependency, an incompatible build, a damaged file, or a stale plugin reference.

The wording gives useful direction:
- “speak.dll was not found” or “is missing” usually means the file is absent from the application’s search path.
- “Error loading speak.dll. The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency used by the plugin is missing, even when
speak.dllitself is present. - “Entry point not found” usually indicates an incompatible or mismatched build.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, architecture mismatch, or a damaged dependency.
- “Missing or corrupted” calls for restoring the original application package rather than replacing one file blindly.
Fix 2: Repair Miranda IM from its original distribution
This is the most likely solution for an old Miranda installation.
Use the original Miranda IM installer or the archived Miranda IM distribution from the official Miranda project. If you use Miranda NG, use its official package and its supported plugin set instead. Do not combine files from unrelated Miranda generations.
Back up your profile first
Before reinstalling:
- Close Miranda completely.
- Check the notification area near the clock.
- Right-click the Miranda icon and choose Exit if it is still running.
- Press Windows + E.
- Back up your Miranda profile, databases, and settings to a separate folder or external drive.
- If you are unsure where the profile is stored, search for the profile folder used by your installation rather than deleting folders at random.
The profile contains personal settings and message history. A normal repair should preserve it, but backing it up protects you if the installation has become confused.
Reinstall the matching product
- Obtain the installer from the official Miranda IM archive or the official Miranda NG distribution.
- Prefer the same product family you were already using.
- Prefer the same general generation and architecture where possible.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that you intentionally opened the installer, then select Yes.
- Install to the existing Miranda location only if you have backed up the profile.
- Allow the installer to restore the application files and plugin directory.
- Start Miranda normally.
If Miranda now opens without the error, the missing or damaged plugin was restored. Do not copy another speak.dll over the repaired installation.
The current Miranda IM archive may contain newer releases, but the existence of a current or archived Miranda installer does not establish that it still includes this old plugin. If the installer does not restore speak.dll, use the next fix and remove the obsolete plugin reference instead of forcing an unrelated file into the folder.

Fix 3: Disable or remove the obsolete Speak plugin
If Miranda can start after the plugin is removed, the plugin is no longer required for basic operation.
Use Miranda’s plugin manager
The exact menu wording varies by Miranda generation, but the process is generally:
- Start Miranda.
- Open Options, Settings, or Plugins.
- Find the plugin list.
- Look for Speak, WinterSpeak, or a disabled or failed plugin entry.
- Clear its enabled checkbox or select Disable.
- Apply the change.
- Close and restart Miranda.
If Miranda cannot reach its settings because startup fails, use File Explorer:

- Open the Miranda installation folder.
- Open
Plugins. - Move the old
speak.dllto a temporary backup folder outside the Miranda installation. - Do not delete it immediately if you may need to identify it later.
- Start Miranda again.
If Miranda starts normally, the old plugin was blocking startup or generating the missing-file request. You can leave it disabled or remove it after confirming that the profile and other plugins work.
Do not leave several copies of speak.dll, WinterSpeak.dll, or other speech plugins in different Miranda directories. Multiple installations can cause the wrong executable to load the wrong plugin.
When Miranda still reports the file
A stale startup entry or damaged profile may continue to refer to the plugin. Check for:
- A second Miranda installation being launched by a shortcut
- A portable copy on another drive
- A shortcut whose Target points to an old executable
- A plugin configuration that still names
speak.dll - A backup restored without its complete
Pluginsfolder
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the Miranda shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Confirm that it points to the installation you repaired.
- Select Open File Location and inspect that installation’s
Pluginsfolder.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an old plugin, particularly if it is unusual, unsigned, or bundled with an outdated application.

- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
speak.dllor the Miranda installation. - Read the detection details and file path.
- If the file came from the known Miranda installation and your security product confirms it as a false positive, use the available Restore action.
- Restart Miranda.
Restore the file only when you can verify its origin. If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unrelated system directory, or an unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it. Scan the computer and reinstall Miranda from its original distribution instead.

If quarantine repeatedly removes the restored file, do not keep disabling protection. Leave the file quarantined, record the detection name, and use a clean official Miranda package or remove the obsolete plugin.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The publicly catalogued speak.dll is identified as a 32-bit plugin. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit Miranda application, so Windows being 64-bit does not mean that you should copy the plugin to System32 or SysWOW64.
The important match is:
- 32-bit plugin with a compatible 32-bit Miranda host
- 64-bit plugin with a compatible 64-bit host, if that product supports it
- Plugin and host from the same Miranda product family and compatible build
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read System type.
To check the application’s architecture, consult the original Miranda package information or the executable’s properties when available. Do not infer compatibility from the Windows architecture alone.
If a repaired installation shows an entry-point error or “not designed to run on Windows,” remove the copied or mismatched plugin and reinstall the correct Miranda package. Never substitute a random 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit plugin.
Fix 6: Reinstall the owning application instead of guessing dependencies
A “specified module could not be found” message may refer to a dependency required by speak.dll, not the plugin itself. The evidence does not establish that this plugin requires a particular Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable.
Use this sequence:
- Close Miranda.
- Back up the profile.
- Uninstall Miranda only if a normal repair did not work.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the matching official Miranda package.
- Start Miranda before restoring optional plugins.
- Add supported plugins one at a time.
- Test Miranda after each addition.
This method identifies whether the failure belongs to the base application or to an optional plugin. It also avoids adding unrelated runtimes that may not address the error.
Fix 7: Repair Windows only when other applications also fail
Windows repair tools are appropriate when multiple unrelated applications report damaged system components. They are unlikely to restore speak.dll, because this file is associated with a third-party Miranda plugin rather than a protected Windows component.

Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Miranda again.
Microsoft documents that DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. If Miranda alone still reports speak.dll, return to the Miranda installation and plugin steps rather than repeating Windows repair commands.

Reinstalling Miranda remains the definitive fix when this specific third-party plugin is the problem.

speak.dll is not identified as a graphics, audio, chipset, or other Windows driver file. Device Manager therefore should not be your first repair tool for this error.
Check drivers only if the same computer is also showing broader hardware problems:

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Update driver only for that identified device.
- Restart Windows and test the hardware separately from Miranda.
Do not replace speak.dll with a driver package. This is optional and does not replace repairing the Miranda installation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL installer. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Do not run this command merely because speak.dll is missing:
regsvr32 speak.dll
If a DLL does not export the required registration entry point, Regsvr32 reports an error. Registering a plugin also does not place it in Miranda’s Plugins directory, restore its dependencies, or repair a damaged Miranda profile.
Use Regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that its DLL is a self-registering component and gives the correct file and location. That is not the normal repair path for a Miranda plugin.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading speak.dll from an unknown DLL website can introduce:
- Malware or a modified file
- The wrong Miranda generation
- The wrong architecture
- A damaged or incomplete plugin
- DLL search-order conflicts
- A file that still lacks its required dependencies
Copying it to System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can make Windows or another program load the wrong file. It may also hide the original installation problem without fixing it.

Use the original Miranda IM installer or official archived Miranda distribution. For Miranda NG, use its official package and supported plugin list. If the old plugin is no longer available for your build, disable or remove it rather than installing an unverified substitute.
If reinstalling still fails
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the error names the Miranda executable you repaired.
- Check the shortcut target for an older installation.
- Search all drives for multiple Miranda folders.
- Inspect each installation’s
Pluginsdirectory. - Remove duplicate or obsolete copies of the plugin.
- Check antivirus history again.
- Test Miranda with optional plugins disabled.
- Restore the profile only after the clean application starts.
- If the clean installation fails, test whether another Windows account can launch it.
- Scan the system if
speak.dllappears outside a known Miranda directory.
If only one old Miranda profile fails, the profile or its plugin configuration may be damaged. If every clean installation fails with a dependency message, identify the exact executable and consider that the error may concern a different file with a similar name, such as speech.dll or spcommon.dll.
