For most PS5 setups, the console should send sound over HDMI to your TV or monitor, which then feeds a soundbar or powered speakers. A TV soundbar is usually the easiest upgrade; compact powered stereo speakers suit a desk; and ordinary Bluetooth speakers are not guaranteed to pair directly with the console.
Choose the right audio path first
Buy for the connections in your room, not because a product is labeled “for PS5.” The usual wiring is:
- TV with ARC/eARC: PS5 HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN; TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar or powered speakers.
- Monitor with audio output: PS5 HDMI OUT → monitor HDMI IN; monitor 3.5mm or optical OUT → speakers.
- Display with no audio output: PS5 → HDMI audio extractor → display and speakers.
- Soundbar with video passthrough: PS5 → soundbar HDMI IN; soundbar HDMI OUT → TV or monitor.
The final option can be useful, but the soundbar must pass through every video feature you need. Sony recommends connecting the PS5 directly to the display when diagnosing picture or sound problems. See PlayStation PS5 support.
Which speaker type fits your setup?
| Situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TV gaming and a simple installation | Soundbar | One compact unit, usually controlled by the TV remote; a subwoofer can add bass. |
| Gaming monitor or desk | Powered stereo speakers | Clear near-field sound without an AV receiver. |
| Monitor with no audio output | HDMI audio extractor or HDMI-input soundbar | Creates an audio route, provided video passthrough supports your signal. |
| Movies, music and room-filling sound | Soundbar with subwoofer or AV receiver with passive speakers | More scale and upgrade potential, with greater cost and space requirements. |
| Competitive multiplayer or private listening | Headset | Better isolation, microphone performance and echo control. |
| Wireless PlayStation-focused setup | PS Link-compatible product | Designed for PlayStation connectivity; confirm regional availability. |
Powered stereo and 2.1 speakers
Powered speakers contain their own amplifier and need AC power or a specified USB power source. A 2.0 pair is often the best desk value. A 2.1 system adds a subwoofer, but bass can disturb people in adjacent rooms. Passive speakers cannot connect by themselves; they require an AV receiver or stereo amplifier.

Soundbars
A soundbar works through TV ARC/eARC, optical, direct HDMI passthrough, and occasionally USB audio. Virtual surround and Dolby Atmos processing depend on the complete HDMI chain and room, so a logo does not guarantee discrete rear-channel sound. Sony’s current range includes compact bars and Atmos/DTS:X-oriented systems; use the Sony soundbar catalog and verify each model’s inputs and passthrough. The Sony soundbar support catalog provides model documentation.
Wireless options
Sony announced PULSE Elevate wireless speakers for PS5, PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal using PlayStation Link, with Bluetooth for other devices. Check launch status, stock and price for your country on the official announcement. Availability is not established uniformly across regions.
Can speakers connect directly to a PS5?
USB speakers
USB power is not USB audio. Many inexpensive desktop speakers use USB only for electricity and require a separate 3.5mm cable. USB-audio speakers contain a sound device and may appear under the PS5’s output devices, but compatibility is model-specific. If the documentation does not explicitly describe USB audio input, do not assume the cable carries sound.
Bluetooth speakers
Do not treat an ordinary Bluetooth speaker as plug-and-play. Direct pairing is not guaranteed by Sony’s documented audio workflow. Alternatives include pairing the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV, using a compatible USB Bluetooth transmitter, or using an HDMI extractor that transmits Bluetooth audio. Bluetooth can add delay and generally is not the preferred route for competitive play.

3.5mm, optical and HDMI
The PS5 console has no conventional speaker jack. The DualSense controller has a headset jack, which can feed powered speakers but is a workaround rather than a permanent installation. Optical speakers need optical output from the TV, monitor, extractor or another audio device. HDMI-input soundbars are the cleanest direct-console option when their passthrough supports your display signal.
TV connection: the easiest installation
Use this wiring whenever the TV has ARC or eARC:
PS5 HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC
If ARC/eARC is unavailable, use the TV’s optical output:
PS5 HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN
TV optical OUT → soundbar optical IN

Select the TV as the PS5’s HDMI destination. TV menu labels differ by manufacturer, so enable external-speaker, ARC/eARC or optical output in the television’s sound settings.
Monitor owners: check the audio output before buying
A monitor with 3.5mm output can feed powered speakers directly:
PS5 HDMI OUT → monitor HDMI IN → monitor 3.5mm OUT → speakers
Optical output, HDMI ARC/eARC or explicitly documented USB audio can serve the same role. If the monitor has no audio output, an HDMI extractor must split sound from the video. Do not rely on the word “4K” in an extractor listing. Verify 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM, HDCP and the required HDMI version. A basic HDMI 2.0 extractor may not preserve a 4K/120Hz setup.

Protect 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR
The PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 features and 4K/120Hz output, but the result depends on the display port, cable, firmware and every intermediary device. Before placing a soundbar or extractor between console and display, check:
- 4K at 120Hz passthrough, if required;
- HDR and HDCP support;
- VRR and ALLM support;
- HDMI input and output specifications;
- whether eARC or ARC is available.
The safest arrangement is usually PS5 → display directly, then display audio → soundbar. Sony’s 4K/120Hz guide explains cable, port and intermediary-equipment limitations.
Configure PS5 audio
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Select Sound, then Audio Output.
- Choose the recognized Output Device.
- Set HDMI Device Type correctly. Selecting AV amplifier exposes channel-count and speaker-position controls.
- Choose Audio Format (Priority) for the receiving TV, soundbar, receiver or extractor.
- Adjust output level under Settings → Sound → Volume if needed.
For a simple stereo pair, start with stereo/PCM unless the receiving equipment specifically supports a multichannel format. Available settings vary with the connected equipment. Sony documents these controls in How to change PS5 audio settings. You can also change output devices in the Control Center’s Sound menu; automatic switching is useful when moving between speakers and a headset.

- Multiplatform, Low-latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2
Console-processed TV 3D audio, a soundbar’s virtual surround, and Dolby Atmos or DTS:X are different systems. Atmos operation depends on the game or app, PS5 format setting, TV or receiver, ARC/eARC and the rest of the HDMI chain. Stereo speakers can sound excellent, but a “3D” label does not create discrete rear speakers.
Voice chat needs a microphone
Speakers reproduce game and chat audio but do not provide a microphone. Chat requires a headset microphone, separate USB microphone, DualSense microphone or another supported input. Open speakers plus the controller mic can create echo, allowing other players to hear their voices or your game. Headphones remain the better choice for private or competitive multiplayer.
Troubleshooting common failures
USB speakers light up but are silent
- Confirm the USB port is documented as audio input, not power-only.
- Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Output Device and check whether the speaker is recognized.
- Test through the TV, monitor or extractor using 3.5mm, optical or HDMI.
- Check that the PS5 output has not remained on HDMI.
A Bluetooth speaker pairs with a phone but not the PS5
Use the TV’s Bluetooth audio, a compatible USB transmitter, an HDMI Bluetooth extractor or a wired display output. Confirm the transmitter profile matches the speaker; microphone return audio may not be available.
4K/120Hz or VRR disappeared
Remove the soundbar or extractor from the video path and connect PS5 directly to the display. If direct soundbar wiring is unavoidable, use a verified HDMI input, cable and firmware combination that supports the desired mode.

Bluetooth, TV processing, lip-sync settings and extractor buffering are common causes. Prefer HDMI, optical or wired analog, enable TV game mode, disable unnecessary processing and adjust the soundbar’s sync control.
Sound is too quiet or muted
Check PS5, TV/monitor, soundbar and speaker volume controls, plus the monitor’s output level. The DualSense mute button can mute sound output to speakers; Sony lists this behavior in its audio settings guidance.
Buying checklist
- Does the product accept HDMI, ARC/eARC, optical, 3.5mm or confirmed USB audio?
- Is USB providing power only?
- Will the connection preserve 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM and HDCP?
- Is latency acceptable for the games you play?
- Do you need stereo, a subwoofer, virtual surround or a full AV system?
- Where will the speakers, subwoofer and volume controls fit?
- How will you handle chat and microphone echo?
- Are regional stock, warranty, returns and current price confirmed?
Choose the audio path first: a soundbar for straightforward TV gaming, powered stereo speakers for a desk, an extractor for an audio-less monitor, and an AV receiver when maximum expansion matters. Ordinary Bluetooth or USB-powered speakers are not automatic PS5 solutions.
