spellchecker.dll is not a standard Windows system file. If Windows says spellchecker.dll is missing or could not be loaded, identify the application requesting it before downloading, registering, or replacing anything.
The filename is ambiguous. Different third-party programs have used a DLL with this name, including older Notepad++ and Miranda NG spell-checking plugins. The correct repair is normally to repair or reinstall the parent application and its matching plugin or dependencies.

What the file information tells you
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| File | spellchecker.dll |
| Category | Third-party application file |
| Windows component | Not established as a Windows file |
| Reported record | 32-bit, version 7534.51.13.21, approximately 0.45 MB |
| Publisher | Not reliably established |
| Correct source | The application or plugin’s official installer |
The reported version and Apple attribution found on some DLL-index pages do not identify the file reliably. Records for the same filename can refer to unrelated binaries. Do not use a version number, file size, or filename alone to choose a replacement.
First, find the program that needs spellchecker.dll
The error usually appears while launching a particular editor, messenger, utility, or older application. Write down the complete message and the program that was starting when it appeared.

Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because spellchecker.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “spellchecker.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading spellchecker.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because spellchecker.dll was not found.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library spellchecker.dll.”
Then check the program’s installation folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and note the Target path.
- Open File Explorer and browse to that folder.
- Look for a
pluginsfolder or a subfolder named after the spell-checking plugin. - Search that application folder for
spellchecker.dll.
If the DLL belongs in an application folder, Windows should load it from there. Its absence from System32 is not evidence that Windows is damaged.
Also check which executable is involved:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a relevant process and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable path and whether the program is a 32-bit or 64-bit installation.
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit plugin even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not replace a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit copy.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the safest first repair when the error names a particular program.

Use Windows repair
For a supported application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
Not every desktop application provides a Repair button. If repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer. Avoid third-party repackaged installers.
The repair worked if the application starts without the loader message and its spell-checking feature opens normally. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the plugin and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Repair the Notepad++ spell-checking plugin
An older Notepad++ installation may contain the historical Spell-Checker plugin. Its packages included separate ANSI and Unicode releases, and the plugin was installed in the Notepad++ plugin directory.
The historical plugin also required GNU Aspell and a language dictionary. Therefore, copying only spellchecker.dll may leave the application unable to start because a companion module or dictionary is missing.

Check the installation as follows:
- Start Notepad++ if it opens.
- Select ? > About Notepad++ and note whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Close Notepad++.
- Open its installation directory.
- Check the
pluginsdirectory and the plugin’s own subfolder. - Remove or rename a damaged old spell-checker plugin only if you have confirmed it is the component named in the error.
- Install the compatible plugin package through Notepad++’s supported plugin process or the plugin’s official distribution.
- Install the required Aspell package and the appropriate language dictionary when the plugin documentation requires them.
- Restart Notepad++ and test spell-checking.
Do not install an old 32-bit plugin into a 64-bit Notepad++ installation, or the reverse. A mismatch can produce a load failure even when the DLL is present.
If the current Notepad++ installation does not use that old plugin, the error may be coming from another application instead. Do not assume that every spellchecker.dll belongs to Notepad++.
Fix 3: Check Miranda NG and other plugin installations
Miranda NG documents a SpellChecker.dll plugin that uses Hunspell and has separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
If Miranda NG is the program that fails:
- Open the Miranda NG installation directory.
- Check the
pluginsfolder. - Confirm whether
SpellChecker.dllis present. - Check the Miranda NG build architecture.
- Install the matching plugin build from Miranda NG’s official distribution.
- Restore the Hunspell-related files or dictionaries required by that plugin.
- Restart Miranda NG.
The same approach applies to any other application. Identify the parent executable, then obtain the plugin from that application’s official vendor or distribution channel. Current software can also use a managed spell-checking component rather than this native DLL, so a filename found in a search result does not prove which product installed it.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a plugin DLL.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
spellchecker.dllor the affected application. - Verify the application’s publisher and installation source before taking action.
If the file belongs to a trusted, correctly installed application and the detection is demonstrably a false positive, restore it only through Windows Security and reinstall the application from its official source afterward. Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches the error.
If the file appeared in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated system directory, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. A familiar filename can be used by malicious software.

Fix 5: Check dependencies instead of replacing the named DLL
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that spellchecker.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not. The missing component may be a plugin library, language dictionary, Hunspell or Aspell file, or an architecture-matched runtime required by the parent application.
Use these checks:
- Reinstall the complete application or plugin package.
- Install the documented language dictionaries.
- Confirm that all files came from the same release and architecture.
- Check whether the application has a Verify, Repair, or Check files option.
- Review the application’s own log or error dialog for the missing dependency name.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because the error mentions a DLL. Install one of those runtimes only when the application’s installer or diagnostic specifically identifies it as required.
Fix 6: Run Windows repair commands only for Windows symptoms
Because spellchecker.dll is not established as a Windows system file, SFC and DISM will not normally restore the correct third-party plugin. Use them when Windows itself has additional problems, such as damaged system components, failed updates, or multiple built-in applications malfunctioning.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports spellchecker.dll, return to the application’s repair or reinstall process.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not reveal which application file changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A spell-checker DLL error is not normally a driver problem. Device Manager is relevant only if the application also reports graphics, audio, storage, or other hardware failures.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the application’s error or Windows warning.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon, install the driver from the device manufacturer or computer manufacturer. Do not replace spellchecker.dll as a way to repair a driver.
When checking every device manually would mean hunting through many driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing the application that owns spellchecker.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after an application installation, update, or cleanup operation. It does not guarantee recovery of a third-party DLL.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish if the restore point is appropriate.
System Restore can roll back installed programs, system settings, and system files. If it does not help, reinstall the affected application from its official source.

Do not download a generic replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. They may also combine a DLL from an unrelated application under the same basename. A replacement can appear to fix one message while creating a different load failure.
Use the application developer’s official installer, plugin manager, or documented plugin package instead.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not universal storage locations for application plugins. Copying the file there can cause another program to load the wrong binary and hides the original installation problem.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 applies only to DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer registration interface. Many application plugins and runtime libraries do not export it. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 spellchecker.dll
will not repair an ordinary missing plugin and may produce “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.” Use registration only when the specific application’s official instructions require it and identify the correct file path.

Do not install Windows Features at random
Windows Features such as .NET Framework components or legacy support should be enabled only when the application explicitly requires them. They are not a general solution for an ambiguous spellchecker.dll error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the error remains
Collect these details before seeking application support:
- The complete error text
- The application name and version
- The executable’s full path
- The location where
spellchecker.dllwas expected or found - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Your Windows version and architecture
- Whether the error began after an update, cleanup, or antivirus event
- Whether Protection History shows a quarantine action
- Whether reinstalling the application changed the message
The reliable diagnosis is the program that requested the DLL, not the filename by itself. Once that program and its architecture are known, repair its complete installation rather than searching for a universal spellchecker.dll.
FAQ
Is spellchecker.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as a third-party application or plugin filename, not a standard Windows component.
Does Apple make spellchecker.dll?
That attribution appears in some third-party file records but is not independently established by an official Apple or Microsoft source. Treat it as unverified metadata.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I install the 32-bit version listed online?
No. The reported 32-bit record does not prove that it belongs to your application. Match the plugin to the parent program’s architecture and obtain it from the program’s official source.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix the error?
Not automatically. Install a runtime only when the application specifically reports that dependency. Reinstalling the parent application and its plugin is more appropriate for this filename.
Can SFC restore spellchecker.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while spellchecker.dll is generally an application-owned file.
What if the DLL exists but Windows still cannot load it?
A dependency may be missing, the architecture may be incompatible, or the file may be damaged. Reinstall the complete application or plugin package and its documented dictionaries or spell-checking components.
