In a tabletop role-playing game, a spell is usually a defined magical effect, while an ability is a broader character capability that may be magical or nonmagical. The terms and rules depend on the game and edition. The examples below use Dungeons & Dragons’ 2014 fifth edition and Pathfinder RPG; they are not universal rules.

What’s the difference between a spell and an ability?

A spell is a particular effect with rules describing how it works and what it takes to use it. An ability can refer to a wider feature or capability, including spellcasting, changing shape, or a nonmagical action a character can perform. Some games use these labels differently, so check the terminology in the rules for your game.

Pathfinder RPG illustrates the broader use of “ability”: its rules describe class features that let characters do things they otherwise could not, including casting spells or changing shape. Its glossary also distinguishes extraordinary abilities, which do not rely on magic. Archives of Nethys: Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook, Getting Started

How spells work in D&D 2014 fifth edition

In the 5e SRD, a spell’s entry gives its name, level, school, casting time, range, components, and duration, then describes its effect. Depending on the spell, the rules may also explain its target, whether it requires concentration, and whether it can be cast as a ritual. 5e SRD: Magic and Spellcasting

Learning and preparing spells

How a character gets spells depends on class. In the 2014 rules, a wizard records spells in a spellbook and prepares a subset to use; other spellcasting classes follow their own rules for learning or preparing spells. A wizard’s spellbook is an in-game rules feature, not a requirement that every player keep a real-world notebook. D&D Beyond: 2014 Basic Rules, Classes

Spell slots and cantrips

Many 2014 fifth-edition spells use spell slots, a limited resource. In the SRD rules, expended slots are restored after a long rest. Cantrips are spells a character can cast at will without using a spell slot. Check a character’s class rules and the individual spell for the applicable details; these rules are specific to this edition.

Components and practical constraints

A spell’s components can determine whether a character can cast it in a particular situation. In the cited SRD rules, verbal components require speech, somatic components require a free hand, and material components must be provided. If a material component has a listed cost or is consumed by the spell, the character must supply it as specified.

What to check before using a spell or ability

When deciding whether an effect will work in a scene—or comparing two options—look up its rules entry and check:

  • Classification: Is it a spell, a class feature, or another kind of ability?
  • Action or casting time: How long does it take to use?
  • Range and target: How far can it reach, and whom or what can it affect?
  • Duration and concentration: How long does it last, and must the character maintain concentration?
  • Requirements: Does it need speech, a free hand, or a specific material?
  • Access: Must the character know, learn, or prepare it?
  • Cost: Does using it expend a spell slot or another limited resource?

These are useful comparison points in the D&D 2014 fifth-edition rules, but another game may classify effects or handle costs differently.

Why the game and edition matter

“Spells and abilities” is not one shared rules system across tabletop RPGs. Even within a game line, editions can change how characters gain effects, what resources they spend, and what a term means. Pathfinder’s introductory rules also recognize that groups may use house rules and recommend discussing changes together. For precise guidance, name the game and edition, then use that version’s rulebook or rules reference.
