Oblivion Remastered’s spell system is built around six magic schools and spells defined by their effects, strength, duration and delivery. You can inspect those details in the Magic Menu; creating custom spells uses the original game’s spellmaking framework, but exact menus and access requirements can vary by Remastered version and platform.
How spells work
A spell combines one or more magical effects. Its description can show the effect, governing school, magnitude, duration, delivery range and, when relevant, area. The original Oblivion PC manual describes three delivery types:
- Self: the spell affects the caster.
- Touch: the caster must be close enough to touch the target.
- Target: the spell can be aimed at a ranged target.
Magnitude indicates the strength of an effect, duration how long it lasts, and area the radius over which it applies. Check a spell’s details in the Magic Menu rather than assuming two spells with similar names behave alike.
What are the magic schools in Oblivion Remastered?
The six schools used in original Oblivion references are Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism and Restoration. A community-maintained Oblivion spell reference organizes spells this way; treat it as an original-game guide, not a definitive Remastered catalog.

A spell’s school determines which skill governs it. The manual explains that successfully casting a spell improves the skill associated with its school. For a spell with multiple effects, the most powerful effect determines the school. This matters when training: the school you expect from one of a spell’s effects may not be the one that actually governs the combined spell.
What affects spell strength and Magicka cost?
Wearing armor lowers spell effectiveness. According to the manual, reduced effectiveness lowers an effect’s magnitude and duration. It suggests wearing less armor or improving the relevant Light Armor or Heavy Armor skill to improve effectiveness.

Magicka cost depends on your skill in the spell’s school. When considering whether a spell is practical, look at its cost alongside its effects, delivery and duration; a spell’s displayed power is not the only factor in whether you can cast it reliably.
How do I make spells in Oblivion Remastered?
The original game manual places the Altar of Spellmaking in the Praxographical Center at the Arcane University in the Imperial City. It describes spellmaking as a Mages Guild secret available after reaching the required rank. Because Remastered has received interface changes and patches, use this as the original-game route and verify the current menu and access requirements in your build.

- Reach the spellmaking altar. In the original game, go to the Praxographical Center in the Arcane University. The manual ties access to the appropriate Mages Guild rank.
- Choose effects you already know. The manual says custom spells can use effects available to your character.
- Set each effect’s parameters. Choose magnitude and duration, and set an area radius when applicable. You can combine two or more effects.
- Check the displayed requirements. The interface reports Magicka cost, gold cost and the skill score required to cast the spell. The manual warns against creating a spell that costs more Magicka or requires more skill than you have.
- Confirm the spell works for your character. Consider its school, cost and delivery before committing to a design.
Bethesda’s Remastered FAQ describes the game as retaining the original’s underlying gameplay and world logic while adding refinements. That supports using the manual to understand the system, but does not establish that every original spell value, vendor, access path or interface detail is unchanged.

Patch version and input method can matter when navigating spellmaking. Bethesda’s Update 1.2 notes, dated July 16, 2025, include the fix “Fixed controller issues in Spell making menu.” If a controller interaction does not behave as expected, make sure the game is updated and check the current on-screen prompts.
