Spider-Man Unlimited premiered on October 2, 1999, making its 27th anniversary October 2, 2026. The animated series sent Peter Parker to Counter-Earth in a new suit and a very different kind of adventure. It lasted 13 episodes, ended unresolved, and its Spider-Man variant later appeared in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse—a cameo, not a continuation.
What was the Spider-Man cartoon set on Counter-Earth?
Spider-Man Unlimited was a 1999 animated series starring Peter Parker, voiced by Rino Romano. Instead of keeping Spider-Man in his familiar New York setting, the show sent him to Counter-Earth, where he faced alternate versions of familiar figures and became involved in resistance against the society’s ruling order. Its science-fiction setting, redesigned costume and unfamiliar supporting cast made it a notably different take on the character.
That distinct premise is the strongest case for calling the series underrated: it tried a less familiar Spider-Man setup rather than repeating the usual city-based formula. “Most underrated,” however, is an editorial judgment, not an established ranking against other Spider-Man cartoons.
What happened to Spider-Man Unlimited?
The series produced 13 episodes and did not resolve its story. Its final episode aired on March 31, 2001, ending the Counter-Earth adventure on a cliffhanger.

A 2026 retrospective by ComicBook.com reports that Fox scheduled the show opposite Pokémon, pulled it after the first three episodes, and aired the remaining ten produced episodes later. That is a secondary account of the broadcast history, not a confirmed statement from Fox or Saban.
Which Spider-Man Unlimited appeared in Across the Spider-Verse?
The Spider-Man variant from Unlimited is visible among the Spider-People in the Spider-Society imagery in the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The appearance recognizes the character’s distinctive costume, but the film does not continue the cartoon’s Counter-Earth story or settle its cliffhanger. The available reporting describes a visual appearance; it does not establish a substantial speaking role or a reprise by voice actor Rino Romano.

Why the anniversary matters
Twenty-seven years after its premiere, Spider-Man Unlimited remains a brief, unusual branch of Spider-Man animation: a 13-episode science-fiction story with a striking redesign and an unresolved ending. Its later visual nod in Across the Spider-Verse brought the variant back into view for a new audience, even though the original series’ plot remains unfinished.
