Steven Spielberg is reported to be returning to the Transformers franchise as an executive producer overseeing its creative direction. Michael Bay is in early talks to direct the next live-action film, but he has not been confirmed as its director.
Is Michael Bay directing the next Transformers movie?
Not yet, according to TheWrap’s October 6, 2026 report: Bay is in early talks to direct. That is a discussion, not a signed or confirmed directing deal.
TheWrap reports that the project is a Paramount film written by Jason Fuchs. It is set in the present day, but its plot remains under wraps. The report also says Shia LaBeouf will not return.
What role will Steven Spielberg have?
TheWrap describes Spielberg as returning as an executive producer who will oversee the franchise’s creative direction. That is distinct from Bay’s possible directing role: Spielberg’s reported oversight is presented as settled, while Bay’s involvement as director remains under discussion. TheWrap’s headline uses “Transformers 8,” but its report does not establish that as an official title or numbered designation.

What is known about the film’s story and release?
TheWrap’s June 11, 2026 report said Fuchs’s untitled project would continue the story after 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The October report places the story in the present day. Neither report provides a detailed synopsis.
- Official title: not announced in the reports.
- Release date: not announced in the reports.
- Confirmed cast: no cast was announced in the October report; it says LaBeouf will not return.
- Plot: details have not been disclosed beyond the reported present-day setting and June report’s post-Rise of the Beasts story context.
How does the new film fit the franchise?
TheWrap’s 2026 reporting puts the earlier films’ commercial history in context: the first two Michael Bay films each grossed more than $700 million worldwide; Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction each exceeded $1 billion; Transformers: The Last Knight grossed $600 million; Bumblebee grossed $471 million; and Rise of the Beasts grossed more than $440 million. These are figures reported by TheWrap in 2026.

Is this the same as the 1986 film’s anniversary return?
No. The next live-action project is separate from the 40th-anniversary theatrical event for the 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie. Hasbro and Fathom announced that event for September 17, 2026, with an added animated chapter; Hasbro said on September 17 that the event was beginning that day. The announcement also mentioned Studio Series figures inspired by the animated film, but those are existing franchise products, not merchandise announced for the untitled live-action project.
