Spirit Ashes are summonable, AI-controlled allies in Elden Ring. They can draw enemy attention, deal damage, cast spells, or help absorb punishment while you fight. To use them, you need the Spirit Calling Bell, a Spirit Ashes item, and a nearby Rebirth Monument. Look for the small monument icon on the left side of the screen; if it is not present, summoning is unavailable in that area.
Spirit Ashes are not Ashes of War, NPC golden-sign summons, or multiplayer co-op. In Shadow of the Erdtree, they are also not the same thing as Revered Spirit Ashes: ordinary Spirit Ashes are companions you summon, while Revered Spirit Ashes are upgrade items used for a separate blessing in the Realm of Shadow.
What are Spirit Ashes?
Spirit Ashes are items that call an AI-controlled combat spirit to fight alongside you. Different spirits fill different roles. Some are relatively durable defenders, some attack from range or cast spells, and others are most useful because they distract enemies and create openings for the player.
You do not directly control the summoned spirit. Your choice is made before or during an eligible encounter: select the spirit you want, summon it when the game allows it, and adapt your own attacks around its behavior. Because every summon has different strengths, there is no single Spirit Ash that is automatically best for every character, boss, or playstyle.

The system is part of Elden Ring’s intended difficulty options. Exploration can uncover new ashes, and upgrading them gives you another way to adjust how much help you bring into a difficult fight. Using Spirit Ashes is therefore a gameplay choice, not a separate mode or an exploit that the game expects you to avoid.
How to unlock Spirit Ash summoning
You need two things:
- The Spirit Calling Bell, which enables the summoning system.
- The ashes of the spirit you want to call, obtained through exploration and other game progression.
Getting the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna
After you acquire the Spectral Steed Whistle, visit the Church of Elleh and speak with Renna the Witch. The official early-game guidance identifies this meeting as the normal way to obtain the Spirit Calling Bell early in the game.

If you miss that opportunity, the bell is not permanently lost. You can later buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. In practical terms, missing Renna changes where you obtain the bell, not whether you can use Spirit Ashes.
If you are unsure whether the system is unlocked, check your inventory and then visit Roundtable Hold. The Twin Maiden Husks are the important fallback, while Renna is the early Church of Elleh route.
How to summon Spirit Ashes
- Make sure you have the Spirit Calling Bell and at least one Spirit Ashes item.
- Enter an area where summoning is allowed.
- Look for the Rebirth Monument icon on the left side of the screen.
- Use the Spirit Ashes item you want to deploy.
- Fight alongside the spirit until it is defeated, the encounter ends, or another listed termination condition occurs.
Rebirth Monuments appear at many points of interest and near nearly every boss arena. The icon is the practical test: if it appears, the game is telling you that Spirit Ashes can be used there. You do not need to summon at the monument itself; you need to be within the area in which its effect is active.
Why can’t I summon Spirit Ashes?
When the summon item is unavailable or does nothing, check these conditions in order:
1. Is the Rebirth Monument icon visible?
If the monument icon is missing from the left side of the screen, you are not currently in a valid summoning area. Move toward the relevant point of interest or boss arena and check again. Spirit Ashes are not available everywhere in the open world or inside every dungeon room.

Spirit Ashes cannot be summoned during multiplayer. If you have entered a multiplayer session, end it before trying to use your spirit. Spirit Ashes and multiplayer co-op are separate forms of assistance; the game does not let you combine them in the same encounter.

3. Is another spirit already active?
Only one type of Spirit Ash can be summoned at a time. You cannot call a second different spirit to replace the first while the first summon is active. The existing summon must leave before you can use another one.
4. Is the spirit too far from the monument?
A spirit can leave if it moves too far away from the Rebirth Monument’s active area. This can happen when an enemy, pursuit, or player movement pulls the fight away from the place where the summon was made. If the spirit disappears after the battle travels a long distance, return closer to the valid area before trying again.
5. Has the spirit died or has the encounter ended?
A summon leaves when its HP reaches zero or when the boss is defeated. Reusing the same ashes also causes the current spirit to leave rather than creating a second copy. These are normal termination rules, not necessarily a bug.

Spirit behavior is controlled by the game’s AI, so their value is tactical rather than purely numerical. Consider what the summon contributes to your plan:

| Distraction | Splits enemy attention and creates openings | When you struggle to find safe attack windows |
| Spellcaster or ranged attacker | Deals damage from a distance while you pressure the enemy | When you want to maintain spacing or add another damage source |
| Backup damage dealer | Continues attacking while you fight from another angle | When a boss can be safely attacked from both sides or during stagger opportunities |
These categories overlap, and a spirit’s usefulness depends on the encounter. A summon that performs well against a single large target may be less effective against several fast enemies. Likewise, a fragile ranged spirit may be powerful if you protect it, but poor if the fight immediately reaches it.
How to choose a summon
Rather than asking for the universally strongest Spirit Ash, match the summon to the problem you are trying to solve.

- You are dying before you can heal: try a summon that can attract attention or withstand more punishment.
- You cannot create attack openings: use a spirit that pressures the enemy from another position or keeps it occupied.
- You are playing at range: a durable distraction may keep enemies away from you, while another ranged attacker may increase pressure without changing your positioning.
- You are playing in melee: a ranged or spellcasting ally can give you a second source of pressure, while a defensive summon can make close-range exchanges less risky.
- The summon dies immediately: consider a different role, upgrade the ashes, or change when you summon so the spirit does not receive the enemy’s opening attack alone.
Spirit Ashes do not remove the need to learn an encounter. They can change positioning, timing, and enemy behavior, but the player still controls the character and must decide when to attack, defend, heal, or retreat.

Upgrading Spirit Ashes
Individual Spirit Ashes can be leveled up as part of your broader progression. Finding a new summon and improving it gives you more ways to adapt to areas and bosses, which is one reason exploration matters beyond simply collecting weapons and runes.
The exact value of an upgrade depends on the spirit and the situation. Avoid treating an unupgraded summon’s performance as a final verdict: a spirit that dies quickly early in the game may become much more useful after investment. Conversely, upgrading does not guarantee that every summon will suit every encounter.
If you are stuck, a sensible progression check is:
- Try a different Spirit Ash role rather than repeatedly using the same one.
- Upgrade the ashes you actually intend to use.
- Reconsider your summoning position so the spirit begins in a safer or more useful place.
- Adjust your own tactics around the ally instead of waiting for the AI to solve the fight by itself.
Spirit Ashes versus Revered Spirit Ashes
The names are similar, but the functions are different.

Revered Spirit Ashes are spent at a Site of Grace through the Shadow Realm Blessing menu. The resulting blessing increases the damage dealt and damage negation of summoned spirits and the spectral steed in the Realm of Shadow.

Most importantly, Revered Spirit Ashes are not companions. Collecting one does not give you a new summon to place on your quick menu; it provides material for improving the relevant Shadow Realm blessing.
Do you need Shadow of the Erdtree to use Spirit Ashes?
No. Ordinary Spirit Ashes are part of the base-game combat system. Shadow of the Erdtree adds new content, including additional summons and the separate Revered Spirit Ash Blessing, but it does not replace or gate the original Spirit Ash system.
If you do not own the game yet, Elden Ring is the software required to use the mechanic. If you are specifically researching the Realm of Shadow blessing and its expansion content, Shadow of the Erdtree is the relevant expansion. The expansion is not required for ordinary base-game Spirit Ash summoning.

There is no useful in-game reason to treat them as cheating. Spirit Ashes are an intended system that the developers and publisher describe as one way players can adapt difficulty through exploration, summon choice, and upgrades.
Whether you personally enjoy using them is a matter of playstyle. You can ignore them for a more solitary challenge, use them only when a fight is frustrating, or build your strategy around them. None of those choices changes what the system is: an official combat tool designed into Elden Ring.

You do not need a book, accessory, or special hardware to summon Spirit Ashes. The game mechanic works with the game itself. A physical reference guide is optional, but it can be useful if you want maps, exploration context, NPC information, enemy details, or combat data without constantly searching for individual answers.

For base-game exploration and summon-related discovery, Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume I is the more natural reference. Future Press describes it as covering gameplay mechanics, exploration, areas, NPCs, and maps. Those subjects are especially relevant when you are trying to find items and understand where progression systems fit together.
For combat-focused study, Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume II covers creatures, combat, armaments, and game data. It is a deeper reference for comparing enemy behavior and combat context; it is not required for basic summoning and should not be treated as an in-game upgrade.
Players focused on the Realm of Shadow can consider Elden Ring – Books of Knowledge, Volume III: Shadow of the Erdtree. It is specific to the expansion’s region and is therefore more relevant to Revered Spirit Ashes than to the original base-game summon system.
Current version note
The latest official patch reference located for this guide lists Elden Ring regulation/app version 1.16.1, released on August 21, 2025.
