Split Fiction is a two-player action-adventure from Hazelight Studios, the developer of It Takes Two. It is built for cooperation rather than solo play, supports couch co-op and online cross-play, and lets one full-game owner invite a friend using Friend’s Pass. There is no hands-on gameplay assessment here; the details below distinguish official descriptions from practical setup requirements.
What is Split Fiction?
Split Fiction follows Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers whose work points in different directions: Mio writes science fiction, while Zoe writes fantasy. They enter a machine designed to steal their creative ideas and become trapped in a simulation shaped by their stories. The official premise is that they must cooperate to escape. EA’s game page and Hazelight’s description frame the adventure around movement between science-fiction and fantasy worlds.

Hazelight describes an action-adventure with changing abilities and activities, including platforming, stealth, puzzles, and optional Side Stories. The specific challenges vary by level, according to the game’s official descriptions; that variety is a design description, not an independent judgment of how well each section plays. EA’s launch announcement also presents the game as a cooperative journey through science-fiction and fantasy settings.
Is Split Fiction playable solo?
No. PlayStation describes Split Fiction as exclusively cooperative for two players, so it is not a single-player game with an optional partner. If you are considering it, plan for another person to play with you, either beside you or online. PlayStation’s game page and FAQ state the two-player requirement.

How do Friend’s Pass, online co-op, and cross-play work?
For online play, Friend’s Pass can let one person who owns the full game invite a second player, who installs the pass rather than buying another full copy. EA says both players need platform accounts; online invitations require persistent internet access and EA accounts. EA Help also says console online play requires PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass for both players. Check the current platform and service requirements before arranging a session, since account and subscription policies can change. EA’s game page explains Friend’s Pass, and EA Help’s Friend’s Pass guidance covers online requirements.
The game supports online cross-play, so the two players do not have to be on the same supported platform. Each still needs the relevant account, an installation that supports joining, and online access. A Friend’s Pass reduces the need for a second full-game purchase; it does not remove those practical requirements. PlayStation’s FAQ covers cross-platform play and Friend’s Pass at its official game page.

Can you play Split Fiction in couch co-op?
Yes. Local co-op lets two people play together on one system. On PS5, PlayStation specifies two DualSense wireless controllers, so a second controller is necessary for a local session. PlayStation’s game page confirms couch co-op and the PS5 controller requirement.
Which platforms is Split Fiction available on?
Split Fiction launched March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA’s official page also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 release on June 5, 2025. PlayStation says there are currently no plans for a PS4 version, so do not assume a PS4 copy or upgrade path is available. See EA’s game page, PlayStation’s page, and the Steam listing for platform details; availability can differ by region and storefront.

How does it relate to It Takes Two?
Both games come from Hazelight and put cooperation at the center, but that alone does not establish that their stories, level structure, or moment-to-moment play are the same. EA’s 2025 release reported that It Takes Two had sold 23 million units worldwide at that time; that figure is for It Takes Two, not Split Fiction. The same release quotes Hazelight founder Josef Fares describing the new game’s science-fiction and fantasy worlds and urging players to collaborate. That is promotional language, not an independent gameplay assessment. EA’s 2025 press release provides both the sales figure and Fares’s statement.
