Spotify’s “Can’t play this right now” message is a generic desktop playback-processing error. It means the app could not process the requested audio file, but it does not identify one specific cause. The fastest reliable approach is to work through the audio path first, then the app installation, drivers, and network.
Start by identifying whether you are using the desktop app or web player, whether every track fails or only one, and whether playback uses built-in speakers, Bluetooth, USB, or a virtual device. Those three details determine which fix is relevant.

What “Can’t play this right now” means
Spotify uses this desktop message when it cannot process the file requested for playback. Spotify’s official troubleshooting guidance lists several possible causes: an incorrectly configured output device, an unusually high sample rate, a virtual audio output, outdated sound drivers, audio enhancements or related processing software, network restrictions, and a damaged application cache.
Because the wording is generic, the message is not proof that your account, subscription, or the song itself is at fault. A local audio setting can produce the same message as a blocked network request. The order below narrows those possibilities without changing several variables at once.

Identify the client and symptom before changing settings
Spotify treats several playback failures as separate problems. Use this distinction to avoid applying a desktop fix to a web-player or availability issue.
| What you see | Where it happens | What it usually isolates |
|---|---|---|
| “Can’t play this right now” while starting tracks | Windows or macOS desktop app | App processing, output routing, sample rate, audio software, drivers, cache, or network access |
| Tracks start and rapidly skip | Spotify web player | Browser playback, network, or web-player conditions rather than the desktop app’s audio path |
| A song or episode is greyed out or unavailable | Any client | Content availability rather than a computer audio failure |
| Only Bluetooth playback fails, especially after pausing | Desktop app with Bluetooth headphones | Bluetooth session, headphone firmware, or the selected output |
Also note the scope. If every track fails, test the computer, app, and network. If one track or episode fails while others play, treat it as an availability or file-specific symptom first instead of repeatedly changing system audio settings.
Use a clean reinstall as the first desktop repair
Spotify recommends a clean reinstall because it removes potentially corrupted cache data and installs the latest available app version. A normal uninstall followed by reinstalling over the top can leave damaged local data behind, so follow the clean-reinstall procedure for your operating system.
Windows
- Close Spotify completely, including any Spotify process still running in the notification area.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Spotify, select the menu beside it, and choose Uninstall.
- Complete Spotify’s clean-reinstall steps so the old local cache is removed rather than retained.
- Install the current desktop build from Spotify and sign in again.
- Play several different tracks before restoring optional audio software or changing advanced sound settings.
macOS
- Quit Spotify with Spotify > Quit Spotify.
- Remove Spotify from the Applications folder.
- Complete Spotify’s clean-reinstall procedure to clear the old cache and local application data.
- Install the current macOS app and test playback with the Mac’s normal output selected.
If a clean reinstall fixes playback, the previous installation or cache was the practical cause. If the error returns immediately, continue with output, sample-rate, audio-processing, driver, and network checks rather than reinstalling repeatedly.

Confirm that Spotify is using the intended output
An app can be playing successfully while sending audio to a disconnected monitor, an old headset, a USB interface that is powered off, or a virtual output. Select the physical speakers or headphones you actually want to hear, then test again.
Windows output routing
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended output under the output device list.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and check Spotify’s individual output device. Windows can assign an app a different device from the system default.
- If your Windows version presents the older control, open App volume and device preferences and verify Spotify’s output and volume there.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth, HDMI, USB, and virtual outputs temporarily, then retry a track.
macOS output routing
- Open System Settings > Sound > Output.
- Select the built-in speakers, connected headphones, or USB interface you intend to use.
- Check that the output is not muted and that the selected device remains connected while Spotify is playing.
Changing the output is especially informative when built-in speakers work but Bluetooth or USB does not. That result points to the device path rather than the Spotify account or track.
Set a supported sample rate
A device sample rate that is unusually high can prevent Spotify from processing playback. Spotify moderator guidance recommends a rate from 44.1 kHz through 192 kHz; avoid values such as 384,000 Hz.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows sample-rate check
- Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the active output.
- Open More sound settings, select the output on the Playback tab, and choose Properties.
- On Advanced, inspect the default format. Choose a value between 44.1 kHz and 192 kHz, apply it, and restart Spotify.
- If several applications share the device, test with a standard format first rather than an extreme studio setting.
macOS sample-rate check
For a Mac output whose format has been changed, inspect the selected device in Audio MIDI Setup and choose a sample rate within Spotify’s 44.1–192 kHz guidance. Return to the normal system output in System Settings > Sound, restart Spotify, and test again.

- CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
If lowering the rate restores playback, leave the device at that supported value while you determine which application or interface changed it. Do not assume that a higher number is automatically better for Spotify playback.
Remove virtual outputs and audio enhancements
Virtual audio devices and software that inserts effects, equalization, surround processing, or other enhancements can sit between Spotify and the physical output. Spotify’s guidance describes virtual audio outputs as generally unsupported and recommends reviewing enhancements and related sound-processing software when basic routing and sample rate do not solve the error.
Isolate the audio path
- Switch from a virtual cable, streaming mixer, remote-audio endpoint, or software loopback to built-in speakers or ordinary wired headphones.
- Temporarily disable system audio enhancements for the selected physical device.
- Quit equalizers, spatial-audio layers, recording or broadcast mixers, and other programs that capture or transform system sound.
- Retry Spotify after each change so you know which layer affected playback.
If direct built-in or wired output works while a virtual route fails, keep the direct route for diagnosis and consult the virtual device’s compatibility documentation separately. Re-enabling every processing layer at once can recreate the error.
Update sound drivers and Bluetooth firmware
Outdated audio drivers can stop an otherwise valid output from accepting Spotify’s stream. Install the latest driver supplied for the computer, motherboard, sound card, or USB audio interface, then restart the operating system before testing again.

- Packaging Component: Package include a Foldable Deep Bass Headphone, 3.5MM Audio Cable, Type-c Charging Cable and User Manual.
Bluetooth needs a separate check. If playback fails after pausing Bluetooth headphones, restart Spotify and reconnect the headphones. When the problem continues, check whether the headphones have a firmware update. A successful test with the computer’s built-in speakers helps confirm that the Bluetooth path, not Spotify’s library, is responsible.
Test the network only after local audio checks
Spotify must reach its streaming service even when the computer’s speakers are configured correctly. Firewalls, hosts-file entries, DNS failures, and restrictive networks can block playback.
- Confirm that other internet services work, then allow Spotify through the computer’s firewall when it is listed as blocked.
- Check whether the network firewall blocks
spotifycdn.com. A domain restriction can prevent the audio file from being retrieved. - Inspect the computer’s hosts file for Spotify entries and remove entries that redirect or block Spotify domains. Make a backup before editing system files.
- Flush the computer’s DNS cache, restart Spotify, and test again.
- Connect temporarily through a mobile hotspot or another trusted network. If Spotify works there, the original network, DNS service, or firewall is the likely boundary.
A hotspot test is diagnostic, not a permanent recommendation. If both networks fail, return to the app and audio-path checks; changing DNS repeatedly will not repair a bad output device or corrupted cache.

Rapid skipping in the web player is a different symptom from the desktop app’s file-processing message. First confirm that the browser is the client producing the failure. Test the same account in the desktop app, or test the web player on another network, without changing several browser and system settings together.

If the desktop app plays normally while the web player skips, focus on the browser playback path and the network used by the browser. If both clients fail on the same network, firewall, DNS, hosts-file, or broader connectivity restrictions become more plausible. A web-player skip does not by itself prove that your computer’s sample rate is wrong.
When songs or episodes are greyed out
A greyed-out song or episode is classified separately from a desktop app that cannot process a file. Treat it as unavailable content rather than immediately reinstalling drivers or changing sample rates. Test another available track: if other content plays, the computer’s output and Spotify installation are less likely to be the cause.
A decision path for persistent failures
| Result of the test | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Clean reinstall restores every track | Keep the current app installation; the old cache or build was implicated. |
| Built-in speakers work, but Bluetooth or USB fails | Check that device’s selection, driver, connection, and firmware. |
| Playback starts after changing 384 kHz or another extreme format | Leave the output between 44.1 and 192 kHz and investigate what changed the format. |
| Direct physical output works, virtual output fails | Disable or replace the unsupported virtual audio layer. |
| Spotify works on a hotspot but not home or office Wi-Fi | Review firewall rules, spotifycdn.com access, hosts-file entries, and DNS on the original network. |
| Only one song or episode is greyed out | Treat it as unavailable content rather than a computer-wide audio fault. |
| Web player skips but desktop app works | Investigate the browser and its network path, not the desktop app’s sample rate. |
Make one change at a time and retest with more than one track. That method prevents a temporary reconnection or restart from being mistaken for the real fix and tells you whether the fault follows the app, output device, client, or network.
Quick Recap
