sqlceqp30.dll Missing: Find the App Behind Windows Errors

sqlceqp30.dll is a Microsoft SQL Server Mobile or SQL Server Compact-era application DLL. When sqlceqp30.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the program that installed it, not to download an individual DLL.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact application. Older desktop software, database tools, Visual Studio-related tooling, and business applications could privately deploy SQL Server Compact beside their own executable.

What sqlceqp30.dll is

The qp portion belongs to the native query-processing library set used by SQL Server Compact-era applications. It commonly appears alongside related files such as sqlceoledb30.dll, sqlcese30.dll, sqlceme30.dll, and sqlceer30EN.dll.

It is normally an application runtime file, not a standard Windows operating-system component. Microsoft describes SQL Server Compact as a small, in-process database engine for desktop and mobile applications. The official SQL Server Compact 3.5 download page provides Microsoft’s supported historical desktop runtime package.

Historical version records

The following records are observed historical builds, not a complete Microsoft version list:

Architecture Version record Approximate size
32-bit 3.0.6001.0 0.58 MB
64-bit 3.0.6000.0 0.8 MB

The 30 suffix does not always prove that the application uses exactly SQL Server Compact 3.0. Historical SQL Server Compact deployments can retain a 30 filename across 3.0 and 3.1-era builds. The installed package and file properties matter more than the filename alone.

First, identify the program requesting the file

Do this before replacing anything. The exact parent application determines which runtime version and architecture you need.

Check the error window and shortcut

  1. Read the full error message and note the program name shown in its title bar.
  2. Close the message.
  3. Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
  4. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path.
  5. Open that folder and look for sqlceqp30.dll or the other SQL Compact DLLs.
  6. Record the application name, executable name, installation folder, and whether the DLL is absent or merely failing to load.

If the error appears during startup, the program named in the title bar is usually the best starting point. Do not assume that the application whose shortcut you clicked is the only possible caller if a launcher, service, updater, or scheduled task opened it.

Use Task Manager

  1. Start the affected application until the error appears.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Look for the application executable, launcher, service, or updater.
  5. Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns if you need to add Platform or related process information.
  6. Note whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit when Windows displays that information.

A 32-bit application needs 32-bit SQL Compact binaries. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit binaries. On 64-bit Windows, both architectures may need to be installed when the software uses separate 32-bit and 64-bit components.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Select Filter Current Log.
  5. Filter for Error and review entries created at the time of the failure.
  6. Look for Faulting application name, faulting module name, and the executable path.

An entry mentioning sqlceqp30.dll may identify the caller. However, a Windows loader message such as “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of sqlceqp30.dll is missing.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the most likely solution when the program was recently updated, moved, cleaned, incompletely uninstalled, or restored from a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows repair options

  1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the application that produced the error.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair is not available, use the application’s own installer:

  1. Download the installer from the software vendor’s official support or download page.
  2. Close the affected application.
  3. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  4. Choose Repair, if offered.
  5. Otherwise, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Run the original installer again.
  8. Open the application and test the operation that previously failed.

A proper repair restores the coordinated SQL Compact files, managed provider files, configuration, and application-specific deployment directory. Replacing only sqlceqp30.dll often leaves the rest of that group inconsistent.

If the application has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files, use that option before manually changing files.

What success looks like

The application should open without the DLL message and should be able to perform the database operation that previously failed. If the same message returns, record whether the application restored the DLL and whether the error changed to a different companion file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install the SQL Server Compact runtime required by the app

Use this step only when the application documentation or installer specifically identifies SQL Server Compact as a requirement.

Microsoft’s official desktop package is SSCERuntime-ENU.exe. It extracts:

  • SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi
  • SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi

The package version is listed as 3.5.8080.0.

Install the matching architecture

  1. Open the official Microsoft SQL Server Compact download page.
  2. Download SSCERuntime-ENU.exe.
  3. Run the file and choose an extraction location if prompted.
  4. Open the extracted folder.
  5. Run SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi for a 32-bit application.
  6. On 64-bit Windows, also run SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi when the application or Microsoft instructions require both architectures.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Start the affected application again.

Microsoft documents that the x86 and x64 SQL Server Compact installations must use matching versions. The Microsoft support article on mismatched installations explains why installing only one architecture, or mixing package versions, can cause failures.

Do not assume that SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 is a drop-in replacement for software built specifically around SQL Server Compact 3.0 or 3.1. If the original application installer contains its own SQL Compact runtime, prefer that installer. Do not substitute sqlceqp35.dll or sqlceqp40.dll because the names look similar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the complete runtime set

After installation, inspect the application directory and any SQL Compact installation directory. A working deployment may include several companion native DLLs, not just sqlceqp30.dll.

If sqlceqp30.dll is present but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be absent, the native architecture may be wrong, or the managed and native providers may be different builds. Reinstall the application’s complete runtime rather than copying files one at a time.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine an application DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or detection change.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review entries created when the application stopped working.
  5. If sqlceqp30.dll is listed, verify that it came from the trusted application installation directory.
  6. Do not restore it automatically if the location or publisher is unfamiliar.
  7. If the detection is confirmed as a false positive, restore the file and add an appropriate exclusion only according to your organization’s security policy.
  8. Repair or reinstall the parent application afterward.

Do not disable antivirus merely to download a DLL. A replacement from an unknown source can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail to match the application’s other SQL Compact files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s location and integrity

A legitimate application DLL should normally be in the application’s installation directory or in a runtime directory installed by the product. Its location is more informative than the filename alone.

  3. Compare the path with the application’s documented installation directory.
  4. If the file is in a temporary folder, a download folder, or an unexpected system directory, do not use it as a replacement.
  5. Run the parent application’s repair process instead.

The absence of a visible digital signature does not by itself prove that the file is malicious, particularly for old application runtimes. The original installer and trusted application directory are the stronger sources of provenance.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows corruption is plausible

SFC and DISM are useful when Windows component storage or protected operating-system files may be damaged. They generally will not restore a third-party application DLL that Windows does not own.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run the application repair or installer again.

Microsoft explains the purpose of DISM image repair and System File Checker in its documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When repeated SFC and DISM scans leave the application error unchanged, stop repeating them. The problem is more likely the application’s private runtime, architecture, or installation directory.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair steps and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.

Fix 6: Consider drivers only when the timing points there

A driver is not the normal owner of sqlceqp30.dll. Investigate drivers only if the failure began immediately after a hardware, storage, chipset, or device-related update and the application depends on that device.

  1. Press Windows+X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the recent change.
  4. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Check the driver provider, date, and version.
  7. Use Roll Back Driver only if the button is available and the failure began after that update.
  8. Otherwise, select Update Driver and use the hardware manufacturer’s official package.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Outbyte Driver Updater can make it easier to identify stale drivers instead of guessing through many Device Manager entries; its free scan shows what it detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the parent application’s SQL Compact runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

Individual DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the application’s companion libraries. They also do not repair a broken installer or missing dependency.

Use the original application installer, the software vendor’s official support package, or Microsoft’s official SQL Server Compact package when the application specifically requires that runtime.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

Do not place sqlceqp30.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 unless the product’s documented installer explicitly requires it. SQL Compact applications often use private deployment directories, and the wrong system-wide copy can create more version and architecture conflicts.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A SQL Compact query-processing runtime DLL is not established here as a self-registering COM server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:

regsvr32 sqlceqp30.dll

If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that usually means the DLL is not designed for self-registration. It does not mean that you need another copy. Microsoft documents the regsvr32 command and the DllRegisterServer requirement.

Do not enable random Windows Features

There is no general Windows Feature that restores every SQL Server Compact application deployment. Open Settings > System > Optional features only when the application’s own documentation specifically requires a Windows component. Enabling unrelated legacy features will not reliably restore sqlceqp30.dll.

If the error remains after reinstalling

Collect these details before contacting the application vendor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact executable that fails
  • The complete error text
  • The application version
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The full path of sqlceqp30.dll, if present
  • The versions of nearby SQL Compact DLLs
  • Whether antivirus quarantined anything
  • Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or move

The remaining causes may include a missing dependent DLL, mixed SQL Compact builds, a damaged application profile, an incorrect private deployment path, or software that specifically requires an older SQL Server Compact 3.0 or 3.1 package. At that point, the original vendor is the correct source for the required runtime rather than a generic DLL download.

FAQ

Is sqlceqp30.dll part of Windows?

Usually no. It is associated with an application’s SQL Server Mobile or SQL Server Compact runtime and should not be treated as a standard protected Windows file.

Can the filename identify the application?

No. Several applications could privately deploy the same SQL Compact-era runtime. Identify the executable in the error, Task Manager, Event Viewer, or the installation directory.

Is SQL Server Compact 3.5 compatible with this file?

Not necessarily. The application may require a 3.0 or 3.1-era runtime even though the filename ends in 30. Follow the application installer’s requirements and keep all runtime files on a consistent build.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file is present?

The missing item may be a dependency, or the file may have the wrong architecture or incompatible companion binaries. Reinstall the complete runtime rather than copying one DLL.

Should I use System Restore?

Use it only if the failure began after a recent installation or update and a suitable restore point exists. Understand that restoring Windows can affect applications, drivers, and settings.

Will SFC restore sqlceqp30.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources. It is useful for Windows corruption, but an application-owned SQL Compact DLL normally requires repair or reinstallation of the owning program.
