sqlsort.dll is a Microsoft SQL Server engine file, not a normal Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair the SQL Server instance or application that installed it. Do not download sqlsort.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32; the file must match the SQL Server build, architecture, and related engine files.

What this file actually does

The name sqlsort.dll refers to the SQL Sorting DLL, a private SQL Server engine component published by Microsoft. It was historically used with SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000, where it normally belonged in the SQL Server instance’s private MSSQLBinn directory.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That location is important. sqlsort.dll is not normally a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. It should not normally be placed in:

Older SQL Server documentation recorded that sqlsort.dll had to match sqlservr.exe. A file from a different service-pack level or architecture could cause SQL Server to fail even if the filename was correct. Historical 32-bit and 64-bit SQL Server variants also existed, so the correct replacement cannot be identified from the filename alone.

Modern SQL Server servicing documentation lists newer sorting-related files with different names, including Txsort.dll and sqlsortpdw.dll. That means a current Windows installation may not contain sqlsort.dll at all. If an older application still requests it, the application may include an old SQL Server runtime or depend on an older SQL Server instance.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely cause Best next step
SQL Server service will not start and mentions sqlsort.dll Missing, damaged, or mismatched SQL Server files Repair the named SQL Server instance
An old business application fails at startup The application bundled an older SQL Server runtime Repair or reinstall that application
The error appeared after an update Interrupted service pack, cumulative update, or upgrade Rerun the matching update or repair from matching media
Defender reports or quarantines the file Possible false positive or damaged installation Verify the path, then review Protection history
The message mentions an entry point sqlsort.dll and sqlservr.exe are from incompatible builds Repair the complete SQL Server component set
The file is being requested from System32 Incorrect copying, a broken application path, or an unrelated program Identify the requesting executable before changing files
Only a 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows The program may require a 32-bit SQL Server component Repair the application’s matching 32-bit package
SFC or DISM completes but the error remains The file belongs to SQL Server, not Windows Repair SQL Server or its parent application

Common Windows loader messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because sqlsort.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “sqlsort.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because sqlsort.dll was not found.”
  • “sqlsort.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in sqlsort.dll.”

These are general loader messages. They do not identify the correct SQL Server version by themselves.

Before repairing anything, identify the owner

Do not begin by searching the internet for the filename. First determine which program is asking for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Read the complete error dialog

Write down:

  • The name of the program that fails
  • The executable named in the dialog, if shown
  • The full path displayed in the message
  • Whether the failure occurs when Windows starts, when a service starts, or when you open a particular application

If the error appears while launching an old accounting, manufacturing, reporting, or database application, that application may own the SQL Server runtime even if SQL Server is not obvious in its name.

2. Check installed SQL Server entries

On Windows 11:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Installed apps.
  3. Search for SQL Server.
  4. Look for Microsoft SQL Server entries, SQL Server Setup, or an application that may bundle a database engine.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Apps & features.
  4. Search for SQL Server.

Also check the classic list:

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type Control Panel and open it.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Open Programs and Features.
  5. Review entries for Microsoft SQL Server and the application that fails.

The exact SQL Server instance matters because multiple instances can coexist. Repairing the newest instance will not necessarily repair the older instance used by the failing program.

3. Check SQL Server services

  1. Press Windows key and type Services.
  2. Open Services.
  3. Look for entries beginning with SQL Server.
  4. Note the text in parentheses after the service name, such as an instance name.
  5. Double-click the service and record its Path to executable.

The executable path can show which SQL Server installation is involved. If the service is stopped, do not assume that starting it will repair missing files. Try starting it once and record the exact error. Repeatedly starting a damaged service will not restore its files.

4. Search only the application and SQL Server folders

Use File Explorer to inspect likely installation directories, including:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server

A historical SQL Server installation may contain a path resembling:

...Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQLBinn

If you find sqlsort.dll, record its full path and file properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the Details tab for the file description, version information, and architecture clues.

Do not copy the file yet. A file found in an unrelated download folder, temporary directory, or Windows system directory is not proof that it belongs to the SQL Server instance.

Fix 1: Repair the SQL Server instance

This is the most appropriate fix when SQL Server itself reports the error.

For supported SQL Server versions, Microsoft’s repair process is:

  1. Obtain the original SQL Server installation media or the matching installation package.
  2. Mount the ISO or open the installation media.
  3. Run setup.exe.
  4. In SQL Server Setup, select Maintenance.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Choose the affected SQL Server instance.
  7. Continue through the wizard.
  8. Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
  9. Start the SQL Server service again from Services.

Microsoft documents this procedure in Repair a failed SQL Server installation.

Repair is preferable to replacing one DLL because it can restore missing or corrupted SQL Server files, registry entries, and configuration values as a compatible set.

How to tell whether repair worked

After the repair:

  1. Open Services.
  2. Start the affected SQL Server service.
  3. Launch the application that originally failed.
  4. Confirm that the same error does not return.
  5. Check that the repaired SQL Server path contains the expected private engine files.

If SQL Server still fails, do not download a replacement sqlsort.dll. Check whether the repair used the correct instance, release, service-pack level, and architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a command-line repair of a named instance, Microsoft documents this form:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

For a failed installation or damaged shared components, the documented form is:

setup.exe /ACTION=REPAIR /INDICATEPROGRESS=TRUE

Run the command from the matching SQL Server installation media in an elevated Command Prompt. Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name. If Setup reports missing source files or a missing cached package, stop and obtain the correct media rather than pointing it at an arbitrary DLL.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application that supplied SQL Server

Some older applications install a private or bundled SQL Server runtime. In that situation, repairing the standalone SQL Server installation may not affect the files the application actually uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the application’s repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application after the process completes.

If there is no repair option:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the application.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.

Reinstall when repair does not work

Before uninstalling, confirm that the application’s data is backed up and that you have its installer, license information, and configuration details.

Then:

  1. Uninstall the affected application from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install the application again from its original vendor-provided media or official download.
  4. Apply the application’s matching updates.
  5. Test the program before restoring optional customizations.

Do not substitute a new SQL Server release for an old runtime without checking the application’s requirements. An older program may depend on a specific SQL Server generation or a 32-bit component.

Fix 3: Repair a failed SQL Server update or upgrade

If the error appeared after a service pack, cumulative update, upgrade, uninstall, disk cleanup, or power interruption, the installation may be incomplete.

First, rerun the same update or repair using the correct SQL Server media. Do not mix a file from one build with sqlservr.exe from another. Microsoft specifically warns that incompatible SQL Server engine files can prevent the service from starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Setup fails:

  1. Open the SQL Server Setup log folder.
  2. Locate Summary.txt.
  3. Review the detail logs for the component that failed.
  4. Note the instance name and the first underlying error.
  5. Correct that error before retrying repair.

Microsoft’s SQL Server installation troubleshooting guidance explains how to work through Setup failures.

For SQL Server 2000, use matching original media and the applicable service-pack or security-update level. Do not treat an old update package as a source for a loose DLL. SQL Server 2000 servicing packages are tied to particular builds and architectures.

If Setup reports that cached MSI or MSP files are missing, follow Microsoft’s guidance for restoring missing Windows Installer cache files. Do not manually edit the Windows Installer cache unless the documented repair process specifically directs you to do so.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

An antivirus product may have quarantined a genuine SQL Server file, or it may have detected a modified file that should not be restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand a detection related to sqlsort.dll.
  7. Confirm the original file path and the associated SQL Server installation.
  8. Restore the file only if you have verified that it belongs to the genuine installation and the detection is a false positive.

Microsoft explains this process in Restore quarantined files in Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

After restoring a file, repair the SQL Server installation if the file may have been modified or if related files were also removed. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the entire Windows directory.

Fix 5: Check architecture and instance compatibility

A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit SQL Server component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Conversely, a 64-bit SQL Server service needs compatible 64-bit engine files.

Check the failing application’s installation path:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • C:Program Files (x86) commonly indicates a 32-bit application.
  • C:Program Files commonly indicates a 64-bit application, although folder location alone is not absolute proof.

Also check the SQL Server service’s executable path and the file properties of the installed components. The application, SQL Server instance, and repaired files must belong to the same compatible package.

If an entry-point error remains after repair, suspect a build mismatch rather than a simple missing file. Repair the complete instance or reinstall the parent application. Never replace only sqlsort.dll.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when broader problems exist

SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They do not normally recreate a private SQL Server DLL in an MSSQLBinn directory. Use them when Windows Installer, multiple Windows applications, or other system components are also failing.

Run DISM

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program. If it reports no integrity violations but sqlsort.dll is still missing, repair SQL Server instead. If DISM or SFC reports an error, resolve that Windows repair problem separately.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying which component owns the file will not supply the correct SQL Server build. If you want help identifying damaged Windows components while avoiding repeated manual scans and command guessing, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns sqlsort.dll.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not a normal source of sqlsort.dll. Driver updates should not be the first response to this error. Consider them only if Device Manager also reports a device problem or the failure began with a broader hardware or storage issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Storage controllers, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and System devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a storage or chipset device, use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not install a driver merely because its package mentions a DLL.

Manually hunting through hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver utility does not replace SQL Server repair when the missing file belongs to a database engine.

Do not register or copy this DLL

regsvr32 is not the normal repair method for SQL Server engine binaries. SQL Server loads its engine files directly; they are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries that should be registered.

If you run a command such as:

regsvr32 sqlsort.dll

you may receive a DllRegisterServer error. That result does not repair the SQL Server installation. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of regsvr32 in DLLRegisterServer error guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid these actions:

  • Copying sqlsort.dll into System32
  • Copying it into SysWOW64
  • Renaming a different DLL to sqlsort.dll
  • Downloading a file from a DLL collection site
  • Replacing only one SQL Server engine file
  • Disabling antivirus protection to force a file into place
  • Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a guess

A random DLL may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another SQL Server build, or simply fail because the real problem is a damaged installation.

When System Restore is appropriate

Use System Restore only as a last resort when:

  • The error began recently
  • A known restore point predates the change
  • SQL Server repair media is unavailable or repair repeatedly fails
  • You understand that recently installed applications and drivers may be affected

To check restore points:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Complete the wizard and restart Windows.

System Restore is not a replacement for obtaining matching SQL Server media. If the installation is old or the restore point does not contain the required files, repair or reinstall the owning product afterward.

If repair still fails

Collect these details before trying another repair:

  • Exact error wording
  • Name and path of the executable that fails
  • SQL Server instance name
  • SQL Server service name
  • Full path where sqlsort.dll is expected
  • File version and description, if a copy exists
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Recent updates, uninstallations, disk cleanup, or antivirus detections
  • SQL Server Setup Summary.txt and detail logs
  • The exact error shown when starting the SQL Server service

Use those details to identify whether the problem is a missing source package, an instance-selection mistake, an architecture mismatch, or a failed update. If the parent application is old and its installer is unavailable, contact the application vendor for its supported installation media rather than assembling SQL Server files manually.

FAQ

Is sqlsort.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a Microsoft SQL Server engine DLL, historically associated with SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Can I download sqlsort.dll by itself?

That is unsafe and unreliable. The correct file must match sqlservr.exe, the SQL Server build, the instance, and the application architecture. Repair the SQL Server instance or reinstall the application from matching official media instead.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Generally no. Those packages do not normally provide this SQL Server engine file. Install them only when a separate, clearly identified application error requires them.

Why does a 32-bit application fail on 64-bit Windows?

The application may use a 32-bit SQL Server runtime. Windows architecture does not guarantee that every installed database component matches the application. Repair the application’s own package or its corresponding SQL Server components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC or DISM restore sqlsort.dll?

Usually not. They repair Windows components, while sqlsort.dll belongs to a private SQL Server installation. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, then repair SQL Server separately.

Should I run regsvr32?

No, not as a normal fix. SQL Server engine DLLs are not ordinary registration-based COM libraries. Repair the owning SQL Server installation instead.

Why is the file absent from a newer SQL Server installation?

Current SQL Server releases may use differently named sorting components. The filename alone does not prove that a modern installation should contain sqlsort.dll. Identify the older application or instance that is requesting it.

What if I have several SQL Server instances?

Repair the instance named by the failing service, application configuration, or Setup logs. Do not automatically repair the newest instance, because the application may depend on an older one.
