sqlsrv32.dll errors may appear as “sqlsrv32.dll was not found” or “The code execution cannot proceed because sqlsrv32.dll was not found.” You may also see [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Specified driver could not be loaded or Windows error 126, “The specified module could not be found.”
The 60-second answer
sqlsrv32.dll is the legacy built-in Windows ODBC driver named SQL Server. It is a genuine Microsoft system component, not a standalone DLL that should be downloaded from a file library.

On 64-bit Windows, the expected locations are:
%WINDIR%System32sqlsrv32.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64sqlsrv32.dll
Despite their names, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

What sqlsrv32.dll actually is
Microsoft identifies sqlsrv32.dll as the driver behind the Windows ODBC driver named SQL Server. ODBC, or Open Database Connectivity, lets applications connect to databases through a driver manager and a configured data source name, commonly called a DSN.
This distinction matters because several Microsoft database products have similar names but use different files:
| Product or driver | Typical file or package | Is it sqlsrv32.dll |
|---|---|---|
| Windows ODBC driver named SQL Server | sqlsrv32.dll |
Yes |
| Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 or 18 for SQL Server | msodbcsql*.msi |
No |
| SQL Server Native Client | sqlncli11.dll, installed by sqlncli.msi |
No |
| Microsoft OLE DB Driver | msoledbsql.dll |
No |
The legacy Windows driver is not recommended for new development. Existing accounting programs, database utilities, older web applications, IIS sites, and ODBC-based business software may still depend on it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s ODBC driver installation-checking guidance identifies the driver as an inbox Windows component and explains how to check its architecture and registration.
Where the file should be located
On 64-bit Windows:
%WINDIR%System32sqlsrv32.dll
is the 64-bit copy, while:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64sqlsrv32.dll
is the 32-bit copy.
The naming is a longstanding Windows compatibility convention. Do not infer the architecture from the folder name alone.
A 32-bit application must load the 32-bit ODBC driver. A 64-bit application must load the 64-bit driver. A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
A same-named file in an application folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or another unexpected location deserves additional scrutiny. The legitimate system copy should be in the Windows directories above and should identify Microsoft as its signer.
Why the error happens
The Windows copy is missing or damaged
A failed update, storage problem, system corruption, cleanup operation, or security product action can leave the protected file absent or damaged. If every program that uses the built-in SQL Server driver fails, a Windows component problem becomes more likely.
The application uses the wrong architecture
A 32-bit application may fail even when the 64-bit copy is present and healthy. The reverse can also happen with a 64-bit application.
This often explains why a DSN appears in one ODBC Administrator but not the other.

The DSN points to an old path
An ODBC DSN stores driver information in the registry. After an uninstall, upgrade, migration, or manual cleanup, the DSN may still reference a path that no longer exists.
Microsoft’s Data Source Specification Subkeys documentation shows how a DSN’s Driver value can point to SQLSRV32.DLL.
Only one application is damaged
If other ODBC applications work, the Windows driver is probably available. The failing program may have a damaged installation, an outdated configuration file, an incompatible plugin, or an application-specific DSN problem.
Antivirus quarantined the file
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a system file after a detection. Do not immediately add an exclusion. First confirm what was detected and whether the file is genuinely Microsoft-signed.
The file loads, but the connection fails
A successful driver load does not guarantee a successful database connection. Server names, credentials, encryption, TLS, firewalls, DSN scope, and database availability can all cause later failures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Because sqlsrv32.dll is supplied with Windows, start with Windows servicing rather than a third-party DLL download.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the problem began immediately after an update, do not assume that removing the update is the right answer. A security or servicing update may have exposed an old application that depends on legacy ODBC behavior. Updating the application or migrating it to a current Microsoft ODBC driver is usually safer than rolling back security fixes.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when the file is absent, damaged, or several applications fail.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may take time and can appear paused.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue with the repair-source and recovery steps below.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed is not a useful repair strategy. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows system problems before its full version performs repairs, which may reduce the guesswork when you are manually working through DISM, SFC, and Windows component issues.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a valid repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough to provide compatible components. Microsoft explains this procedure in its DISM and SFC repair guidance.
If SFC still cannot repair the file, review the CBS log, repair the component store with a properly matched source, consider System Restore, or perform an in-place Windows repair. System Restore returns monitored system files and registry state to an earlier restore point, but it is not guaranteed to exist or fix an application-specific configuration.
Fix 3: Verify the file and its architecture
Do not replace the file yet. First check whether the expected copy exists.
- Press Windows + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Look for
sqlsrv32.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%WINDIR%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab for a Microsoft signature when available.
- Use the copy that matches the application’s architecture.
You can identify whether a program is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation, installer, or task behavior. Older database, accounting, and IIS software is commonly 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit.
Never copy the 32-bit file into System32, and never copy the 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Do not overwrite a protected Windows file with one taken from another computer or another Windows build.
Fix 4: Check the correct ODBC Administrator
Windows has two ODBC Administrators on 64-bit systems.
Use these locations:
%WINDIR%System32odbcad32.exe
for 64-bit applications, and:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64odbcad32.exe
for 32-bit applications.
To inspect the driver:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter the appropriate
odbcad32.exepath. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Check whether SQL Server appears.
- Open System DSN and check for the expected DSN.
- Check User DSN if the program runs under your user account.
- Use Configure or Test where available.
A service, IIS application, or scheduled task may run under a different account. Such software generally needs a System DSN rather than a User DSN.
Relevant registry locations include:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREODBC
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeODBC
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareODBC
The Wow6432Node branch contains 32-bit driver and System DSN information on 64-bit Windows.
If the DLL exists but the DSN points to an old or nonexistent path, recreate the DSN with the correct ODBC Administrator. Export or record the current DSN settings first, including the server name, database, authentication method, and encryption options.
Fix 5: Repair the application that fails
If only one program reports the error while other ODBC programs work, repair that program before changing Windows.

If the application created the DSN, reinstalling or repairing it may recreate the correct ODBC registration. Back up application data and configuration before reinstalling.
Fix 6: Handle an antivirus quarantine event
If the file disappeared after an antivirus alert:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the event involving
sqlsrv32.dll. - Review the detected path and reason.
- Confirm that the file was in the expected Windows directory.
- Update Windows Security and Windows.
- Run a full scan.
Restore the file only after confirming that the detection is a false positive and that the file is a legitimate Windows component. Microsoft documents this process in its Defender quarantine restoration guidance.
If Defender repeatedly removes the file, investigate possible malware rather than adding a broad exclusion. DISM and SFC can restore the protected component after the security issue is addressed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 7: Install a modern Microsoft ODBC driver when appropriate
Installing Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 or 18 is not a direct repair for sqlsrv32.dll. Those packages install a different driver and will not normally restore an application hard-coded to use the driver named SQL Server.
Use the current Microsoft ODBC Driver download page when:
- You are developing a new application.
- The vendor specifically requires ODBC Driver 17 or 18.
- The old application fails because of modern TLS or encryption requirements.
- You are migrating away from the legacy Windows driver.
- The connection string or DSN can be changed to use the modern driver.
Migration may require changing the connection string, DSN, deployment package, authentication settings, or vendor software. Installing the package alone does not make an old program switch drivers.
Visual C++ Redistributable packages can be prerequisites for modern Microsoft ODBC drivers, but they are not the normal repair for the Windows inbox sqlsrv32.dll. SQL Server itself and SQL Server Native Client are also not automatic fixes. Native Client uses files such as sqlncli11.dll, not sqlsrv32.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 sqlsrv32.dll
ODBC drivers are located through the ODBC Driver Manager and registry configuration. They are not generally repaired through COM-style DLL registration.
Running regsvr32 may produce an error such as DllRegisterServer was not found, which does not prove that the file is corrupt. Microsoft explains why this command is not a universal DLL repair tool in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

What the common messages mean
“sqlsrv32.dll was not found”
Windows or the application could not locate the required file. Check the correct Windows directory, then use DISM and SFC.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“The specified module could not be found” or error 126
The DLL itself may be missing, but the message can also indicate a dependency, path, registration, or architecture problem. Check the matching ODBC Administrator and DSN rather than assuming the file alone is absent.
“Specified driver could not be loaded”
The DSN may point to a missing or incorrect driver path, or the application may be using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit ODBC subsystem.
“Application was unable to start correctly”
This is a generic loader message. It does not establish that sqlsrv32.dll is the only cause. Check the application installation, Windows integrity, architecture, and event details.

FAQ
Is sqlsrv32.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when found in the expected Windows directory and signed as Microsoft. A same-named file in an unexpected folder should not automatically be trusted.
Does it come from SQL Server?
The legacy driver is shipped with Windows. It is separate from the modern Microsoft ODBC Driver, SQL Server Native Client, and the SQL Server database server installation.
Should I download the DLL?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the ODBC registration. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application installer, or an official Microsoft driver package.
Why does the DSN appear on one computer but not another?
DSNs can be user-specific, system-wide, or architecture-specific. Check the correct 32-bit or 64-bit ODBC Administrator and confirm whether the application runs as a user, service, or IIS worker process.
Will installing ODBC Driver 18 fix the error?
Not if the application specifically requests the driver named SQL Server or expects sqlsrv32.dll. Driver 18 is a separate product and requires an application or DSN migration.
Should I install SQL Server Native Client?
Not as a repair for this file. Native Client uses different components, including sqlncli11.dll.
What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, use a matching Windows repair source if necessary, review the CBS log, and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. If only one application fails, repair that application instead of replacing Windows files manually.
