The program can’t start because sqlxmlx.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

sqlxmlx.dll is a genuine Microsoft file named Microsoft XML extensions for SQL Server. It belongs to the older Microsoft data-access stack used by the OLE DB provider, not to DirectX, the Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET, or a particular game.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches what happened:

  • Only one old program fails: repair or reinstall that application first. Its installer is the most likely owner of the missing dependency.
  • Several older database programs fail: repair Windows components with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • The problem began after antivirus action: check quarantine and restore the file only when it came from the original Microsoft or application installation.
  • You see 0xc000007b or “not designed to run on Windows”: check for a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch or a corrupt binary.
  • The issue started after removing SQLXML or an old database tool: reinstall the matching vendor component rather than copying an individual DLL.
  • The error remains after reinstalling: identify the executable requesting the file with Process Monitor.
  • You were about to download the file from a DLL website: stop. A loose DLL can be malicious, the wrong architecture, or missing the registration and dependent files the application actually needs.

The exact message matters. Common variants include:

sqlxmlx.dll was not found.
The code execution cannot proceed because sqlxmlx.dll was not found.
sqlxmlx.dll could not be loaded.
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).
sqlxmlx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

A plain “missing” message usually means the loader cannot find the file in the expected installation path. 0xc000007b and “not designed to run on Windows” more often indicate corruption, an invalid binary, or the wrong 32-bit/64-bit version.

What sqlxmlx.dll actually is

Microsoft describes Sqlxmlx.dll as XML extensions for SQL Server. It is associated with legacy SQLXML functionality used through the Microsoft OLE DB provider, commonly identified as SQLOLEDB.

Microsoft documents the file as part of Windows or Microsoft Data Access Components, commonly called MDAC, version 2.6 and later. That does not mean every current Windows installation contains the same copy. Windows build, architecture, servicing level, and the application that installed the component can all affect what is present.

Older installations commonly placed the file in a path resembling:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DBsqlxmlx.dll

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit installation may instead use:

C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DBsqlxmlx.dll

Those are historical locations, not instructions to copy the file there manually. Do not put a DLL into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

The file is different from sqlxml4.dll. SQLXML 4.0 is a separate product, and Microsoft states that it stopped being included with SQL Server beginning with SQL Server 2008. SQLXML 4.0 installs its own files under a SQLXML 4.0 program directory and uses sqlxml4.dll for its newer provider functionality.

Microsoft provides separate SQLXML 4.0 SP1 packages named sqlxml_x86.msi, sqlxml_x64.msi, and sqlxml_IA64.msi through the official SQLXML 4.0 SP1 Download Center. Installing SQLXML 4.0 SP1 is not a guaranteed repair for a missing sqlxmlx.dll; it may install a different DLL and should be considered only when the affected application specifically requires SQLXML 4.0.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error

When one program fails and everything else works, start with that program. Its installer may have failed to install the OLE DB files, removed them during an update, or left registry entries incomplete.

Use Windows application repair

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the program that displays the sqlxmlx.dll error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options when available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

If there is no Repair button, select Modify, Change, or the program’s own maintenance option. The wording depends on the installer.

A successful repair should let the application start without the missing-file message. If the application still fails, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. For desktop programs, the safer next step is usually the original installer.

Reinstall from the application’s official installer

  1. Back up the application’s own data, profiles, saved games, or database files.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application vendor or use the original installation media.
  5. Run the installer as an administrator if required.
  6. Choose the architecture matching the application.
  7. Restart Windows again and retest.

Do not assume that reinstalling SQL Server will help. If the failing executable belongs to a business application, utility, or older game launcher, that application may be the component that needs repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

Use this path when multiple older programs fail, the file disappeared after cleanup or an update, or the application installer cannot restore it.

Install pending updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Check again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.

Updates can repair or replace protected Windows files and refresh the component store used by system repair tools.

Run DISM

DISM repairs the Windows component store. Open an elevated terminal as follows:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source, so an internet connection can be necessary. Do not close the terminal just because progress appears to pause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run SFC in the same administrator window:

Rank #2
Microsoft Windows 11 PRO (Ingles) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB Flash Drive
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, retest after restarting. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, Windows may be healthy and the missing dependency may belong to the application rather than the operating system.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow

For further diagnosis, Windows records details in:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Microsoft’s DISM documentation and System File Checker documentation describe these repair processes.

Manually hunting through Windows folders and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and repairing the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the file.

Fix 3: Check the correct architecture

A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit version of its dependency. A 64-bit program needs the 64-bit version. Windows itself can run both types, which is why a file can appear in different program directories.

Architecture problems often produce:

  • 0xc000007b
  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
  • A load failure even though a file with the same name exists

Identify the application type

For a normal desktop executable:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Select Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform if Windows provides that column.
  6. Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If the program is not running, check its documentation or installer. Some applications identify a 32-bit executable with a name ending in *32 in Task Manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct repair is to reinstall the matching application or data-access component. Do not download a 32-bit file because it has the same name as the missing 64-bit file.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove a damaged or suspicious file. That does not prove the file was malware, and it does not prove the quarantine action was incorrect.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving sqlxmlx.dll.
  5. Review the file path and detection details.
  6. Restore it only when the path and origin match the original Microsoft or application installation.
  7. Run a full scan.
  8. Repair or reinstall the owning application afterward.

If another security product is installed, open its quarantine and event history instead. Do not restore an arbitrary file obtained from elsewhere simply because it has the expected filename.

Fix 5: Reinstall the relevant Microsoft data-access component

sqlxmlx.dll is part of an older Microsoft data-access chain. The correct package depends on the program requesting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for entries related to:

  • The affected application
  • Older database connectivity tools
  • SQLXML
  • Microsoft data-access components

Do not remove several related components at random. Legacy SQLXML versions can coexist, and side-by-side installations can share registry information. Removing a newer version may require reinstalling an older one for another application to work.

If the application vendor supplies a database engine, runtime, or prerequisite installer, use that installer rather than extracting a DLL from another machine. Use the official Microsoft SQLXML installer only when the software’s documentation explicitly requires SQLXML 4.0.

Windows Features is usually not the answer

Opening Turn Windows features on or off and enabling unrelated items will not reliably restore sqlxmlx.dll. This file is not a generic feature that can be repaired by enabling .NET Framework, DirectPlay, Media Features, or another unrelated Windows option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Features only when the affected application explicitly documents a required Windows feature and names it. Otherwise, repair the application or the Windows image instead.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a first response

sqlxmlx.dll is a COM-style DLL, and some versions expose registration functions. That means regsvr32 can technically apply in a controlled repair. It does not make a random downloaded DLL safe, and it cannot repair missing dependencies or an incomplete installer.

Use registration only when:

  • The file came from a verified matching installation.
  • The application or component installer specifically expects registration.
  • The file architecture matches the registration tool.
  • The file is not corrupt.

On 64-bit Windows, use the matching tool:

For a 64-bit DLL:

%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathto64-bitsqlxmlx.dll"

For a 32-bit DLL:

%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathto32-bitsqlxmlx.dll"

Run the command from Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). A successful registration message means Windows wrote the requested COM registration data. It does not prove that the application has every dependency it needs.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the timing points there

A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal owner of sqlxmlx.dll. Driver work is relevant only when the error began immediately after a hardware-driver installation, system migration, or device software update.

To check recently changed drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the driver provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Roll Back Driver only when the button is available and the problem clearly began after that update.
  9. Otherwise, select Update Driver and use the hardware manufacturer’s official package when available.
  10. Restart Windows.

Do not use Device Manager to replace sqlxmlx.dll; it does not repair application dependencies.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, package versions, and whether the system needs a chipset, storage, or display driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while installing drivers requires the full version. It is optional, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that actually owns sqlxmlx.dll.

Fix 8: Identify the executable requesting the file

If reinstalling the application and repairing Windows changes nothing, find out which program is asking for sqlxmlx.dll. The visible error may be shown by a launcher, service, updater, or helper process rather than the program you expected.

Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can record file-system activity.

  1. Download Process Monitor from the official Microsoft Sysinternals page.
  2. Run it as administrator.
  3. Start capture.
  4. Launch the program that produces the error.
  5. Stop capture immediately after the message appears.
  6. Filter for Path containing sqlxmlx.dll.
  7. Look for results such as NAME NOT FOUND, PATH NOT FOUND, or ACCESS DENIED.
  8. Note the Process Name and the path the program searched.

This tells you whether the caller is a 32-bit application, whether it is searching an old OLE DB directory, and whether the failure is a missing file or a permissions problem. Repair the component belonging to that executable.

Use System Restore when the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver change, or software installation and restore points are available.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore is reversible through another restore point in many cases, but it does not replace personal backups. If the failure affects only one obsolete program, application repair is usually more targeted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why downloading sqlxmlx.dll is unsafe

A third-party DLL download can fail in several ways:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • It may be a different Windows or MDAC build.
  • It may be 32-bit when the program needs 64-bit, or the reverse.
  • It may lack required COM registration.
  • It may have missing dependent files.
  • Its permissions and installation path may be wrong.
  • It may hide the actual problem in the application or Windows component store.

Microsoft’s official documentation identifies the component and provides supported repair and installation paths. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the affected application’s official installer, or an official Microsoft package when the application specifically requires it.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep Windows updated.
  • Keep the affected application’s original installer and prerequisite packages.
  • Avoid registry cleaners and “DLL fixer” utilities.
  • Do not delete legacy Common Files directories during disk cleanup.
  • Keep antivirus enabled, but review quarantine before permanently removing an important application file.
  • Record whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Do not mix individual DLL versions from different computers.
  • If an obsolete program is the only caller, consider replacing it with a supported application rather than rebuilding an unmaintained MDAC stack.

FAQ

Is sqlxmlx.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. Its documented description is XML extensions for SQL Server, and it is associated with Microsoft’s legacy SQL Server and MDAC data-access stack.

Is it part of SQLXML 4.0?

Not necessarily. SQLXML 4.0 is a separate product and primarily installs sqlxml4.dll. A SQLXML 4.0 SP1 installation is not a universal fix for sqlxmlx.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. The correct location depends on the Windows version, component, and application architecture. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create a mismatch and does not restore registration or dependencies.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for this filename alone. sqlxmlx.dll is a legacy Microsoft data-access component. Install those runtimes only when the error names a separate dependency that actually requires them.

Does regsvr32 fix a missing file?

Only after a verified, architecture-matched file has been restored and the component specifically requires COM registration. It is not a general missing-DLL repair.

What if SFC and DISM report no problem?

That usually means Windows itself is not the owner of the missing dependency, or the file is not protected by the current component store. Repair the application that reports the error and use Process Monitor to identify the actual caller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install SQL Server to get the file back?

Do not install the full SQL Server product just to obtain one DLL. Identify the calling program first, then reinstall its documented prerequisite or repair the application.

When should I replace the old program?

If only one obsolete application needs sqlxmlx.dll, its installer no longer works, and it depends on an unsupported legacy data-access stack, replacing it may be safer than copying files between Windows directories.
