trkwrite.dll is a Roxio file, not a Windows file. If trkwrite.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an older Easy CD Creator component whose installation is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or no longer compatible.

Before changing anything, check:

  • Which program fails: Read the application name in the error window, shortcut, Startup entry, or Event Viewer.
  • When the error appears: Note whether it happens at sign-in, when opening Roxio, or while writing a disc.
  • What changed: Think about a Roxio uninstall, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, backup restoration, application-folder move, or Windows upgrade.
  • Application architecture: trkwrite.dll is associated with an older 32-bit Roxio program. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make a 64-bit replacement DLL appropriate.
  • File location: The DLL should normally be in the Roxio application folder, not C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the complete Roxio product that owns the file.

What is trkwrite.dll?

trkwrite.dll is a third-party DLL associated with Roxio’s Easy CD Creator Engine. Its internal description is Track Writer, indicating a component used by CD-authoring software to handle track-writing operations.

It is not a Windows system component. The exact Roxio application that loads it cannot be identified from the filename alone, because several older Roxio products used the Easy CD Creator Engine. Identify the failing executable before attempting a repair.

Public file records describe it as a Win32, or 32-bit, file. Some third-party records also report a historical version and file size, but those values are identification clues rather than a current Roxio specification. They should not be used to select a replacement download.

Typical messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because trkwrite.dll was not found.”
  • “The file trkwrite.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: trkwrite.dll.”
  • “The module trkwrite.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “trkwrite.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

The last message does not always mean that the DLL itself is bad. It can indicate a damaged file, an incompatible application, an incorrect architecture, or a missing dependency.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Roxio application

This is the most effective fix because Roxio expects a matching group of engine files, configuration data, registry entries, and possibly burning components. Replacing one DLL rarely restores all of those pieces.

Try Windows app repair first

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find Roxio, Easy CD Creator, or Easy CD & DVD Creator.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and open the Roxio application again.

Older desktop programs may not show Advanced options or Repair. If the option is missing, use the original Roxio installer or installation disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair from the original installer

  1. Locate the original Roxio CD, DVD, downloaded installer, or backed-up installation package.
  2. Right-click the installer file.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Choose Repair, Modify, or a similarly named maintenance option.
  5. Allow the installer to replace missing files.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the exact Roxio program that produced the error.

If the installer does not offer repair, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete product is usually the next step.

Perform a clean reinstall

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps and then Installed apps.
  3. Uninstall every Roxio or Easy CD Creator entry related to the failing program.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted.
  5. Remove only leftover Roxio folders that clearly belong to the uninstalled product. Do not delete unrelated folders or personal disc projects.
  6. Run the legitimate Roxio installer from the original media or the vendor’s support channel.
  7. Install the same product release, including its available updates.
  8. Restart Windows again.
  9. Test the application before installing extra disc-burning software.

Do not copy trkwrite.dll into a system folder after reinstalling. A 32-bit private application DLL belongs in the application’s expected directory. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily for 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 is for 32-bit system binaries, but neither is the normal home for this Roxio file.

If the error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, the application may be incompatible with the current Windows release or another Roxio component may be failing.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a file after an update, scan, or change in detection rules. A missing file after antivirus activity does not automatically prove that the file was safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review detections that occurred when the Roxio error began.
  6. Expand any detection that references trkwrite.dll.
  7. Check the detected path, threat classification, and file details.
  8. If the file is clearly inside a known, legitimate Roxio installation and the detection is a false positive, use the available restore action.
  9. Restart Windows and test Roxio.

Restore the file only when the installation source, path, and application are trusted. If the file came from a random download, do not restore it. Reinstall Roxio from trusted media instead.

Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to make Roxio start. A broad exclusion can allow unrelated files in the same directory to escape scanning. If the file is repeatedly quarantined after a clean vendor installation, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection.

Fix 3: Confirm that the application was not moved or partially removed

Older applications often fail after their installation folder is moved, restored from a partial backup, or cleaned by a third-party utility.

Check the following:

  1. Right-click the Roxio shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Confirm that the target points to a real executable.
  5. Select Open File Location.
  6. Look for trkwrite.dll in the application’s own folder.
  7. Compare the folder with the installation path shown in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

If the shortcut points to a folder that no longer exists, remove the shortcut and uninstall the obsolete Roxio entry. If the executable exists but the DLL is missing, repair or reinstall Roxio rather than copying a standalone file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A missing-file message at every Windows sign-in may come from a stale startup entry rather than an active Roxio installation.

Remove a stale startup entry

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Roxio, Easy CD, or an entry whose location points to a deleted folder.
  4. Select the obsolete entry.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup. If the program is no longer installed, uninstall its remaining entry instead of trying to restore its DLL.

Fix 4: Check compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but that does not guarantee that an old disc-authoring program will work correctly. Roxio may depend on old burning filters, drivers, or system interfaces that are unsupported on a current Windows installation.

Try compatibility settings only after repairing the installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Roxio installation folder.
  2. Right-click the failing executable.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  6. Start with the Windows version suggested by the Roxio documentation or installer.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Right-click the executable again and choose Run as administrator.

If this makes the program open but disc writing still fails, the DLL was not the only problem. The application’s writing driver or filter may not work with the current Windows version.

Do not promise compatibility by changing this setting. If the product still fails after a clean reinstall, replacing the obsolete application with a currently supported disc-authoring program may be safer than repeatedly replacing individual files.

Fix 5: Inspect the optical-drive driver only when the symptom involves disc hardware

A storage or optical-drive driver is not the normal cause of a missing Roxio DLL. Do not update drivers simply because trkwrite.dll appears in the message. Check the driver only if Roxio opens but cannot see the drive, cannot begin writing, or reports a hardware-related error.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the optical drive and select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
  8. If Windows identifies a problem, select Update Driver and then Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test the drive.

Do not remove a working storage-controller driver without a clear reason. If the drive is missing entirely, check the computer or drive manufacturer’s support instructions before changing drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through multiple driver packages can be slow and can install the wrong version. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version remains optional. Reinstalling Roxio is still the definitive fix when the error specifically names trkwrite.dll.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

trkwrite.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so SFC normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are useful when other Windows components are also failing, Settings is damaged, Windows features will not open, or multiple unrelated system files report corruption.

Rank #2

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows if DISM reports that repair completed.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the Roxio application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and Roxio again. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove that the Roxio installation is healthy. If it cannot repair files, follow Microsoft’s repair guidance and then return to the Roxio installer.

Repeatedly running SFC or DISM will not normally restore a private Roxio DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of checking system problems and identifying what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repairs through the full version are optional. For this particular file, repairing or reinstalling Roxio remains the definitive solution.

Fix 7: Do not register trkwrite.dll with regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.

There is no verified evidence that trkwrite.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Running this command:

regsvr32 trkwrite.dll

may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs a different copy of the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use regsvr32 unless Roxio’s own documentation for the exact product specifically instructs you to do so. Repairing the complete application is the correct approach.

Fix 8: Investigate a file that exists but will not load

A DLL can be present and still fail because it is corrupt, blocked, the wrong architecture, or dependent on other missing Roxio components.

  1. Open the Roxio installation folder.
  2. Right-click trkwrite.dll.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Check the General tab for an Unblock option.
  5. Select Unblock only when the file came from a trusted installation source.
  6. Open the Details tab and review the description and publisher information.
  7. Check the file’s location and compare it with the application executable.
  8. Run a security scan on the file and the entire system.
  9. Repair or reinstall Roxio if the file is damaged or its metadata is inconsistent.

Do not replace a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit file. Do not assume that a file with the correct name is authentic. Filename matching alone cannot establish safety.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading trkwrite.dll from an unverified DLL website can introduce:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Malware disguised with a familiar filename
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A version that does not match the rest of Roxio
  • Missing dependencies
  • A file that was altered or stripped of useful metadata
  • A replacement that hides the original installation problem

Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or another global folder can also make troubleshooting harder and may cause unrelated programs to load the wrong library.

Use the original Roxio installation media or a legitimate installer supplied through the product vendor’s support channel. If you no longer need the obsolete application, uninstall it and remove its stale startup entries instead of downloading the DLL.

When to remove Roxio instead of repairing it

A clean removal is preferable when:

  • You no longer use the program.
  • The error appears only from a stale startup entry.
  • The installer is unavailable and the program cannot run reliably.
  • The application remains incompatible after reinstalling.
  • Security software repeatedly detects files from the old installation.
  • Windows shows recurring errors from outdated burning components.

After uninstalling, restart Windows and verify that the error no longer appears at sign-in. If it remains, check Task Manager > Startup apps, Settings > Apps > Startup, and Task Scheduler for entries pointing to the deleted Roxio folder.

What to record if the problem continues

Before seeking further support, record:

  • The exact error text and error code
  • The executable named in the message
  • The full path where Windows expects trkwrite.dll
  • Your Windows version
  • The Roxio product name and release
  • Whether the file is present
  • Whether Windows Security quarantined it
  • Whether repair or a clean reinstall changed the message
  • Whether Roxio opens but fails only during disc writing

This information distinguishes a missing application file from a stale shortcut, an incompatible Roxio release, a blocked file, or a separate optical-drive problem.

FAQ

Is trkwrite.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a third-party Roxio DLL associated with the Easy CD Creator Engine. Windows does not normally install or recreate it.

Which application uses trkwrite.dll?

The filename is associated with Roxio Easy CD Creator software, including products built around the Easy CD Creator Engine. The exact failing application must be identified from the error, shortcut, or installed program list.

Should I download trkwrite.dll separately?

No. Reinstall the complete Roxio product from original media or a legitimate vendor installer. A standalone download may be unsafe or incompatible and may not include the other files Roxio requires.

Can SFC restore trkwrite.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while trkwrite.dll belongs to Roxio. Use SFC only when broader Windows corruption is also suspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 trkwrite.dll?

Usually no. There is no verified evidence that this file requires self-registration. regsvr32 does not repair a missing or damaged application installation.

Why does the error appear after uninstalling Roxio?

A stale shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, or file association may still be trying to launch a removed Roxio component. Remove the obsolete entry instead of restoring the DLL.

Can a 32-bit Roxio program run on 64-bit Windows?

It may, but compatibility is not guaranteed. A 64-bit replacement DLL is not appropriate for a 32-bit Roxio application, and old burning components may still fail on a current Windows release.

What is the correct fix if the file exists but cannot be loaded?

Check its location, security status, architecture, and integrity, then repair or reinstall Roxio. Do not register it blindly or copy another file over it.
