Squadron 42 PC Requirements: CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD Explained (2026)

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Squadron 42’s currently published PC floor is: Windows 10 64-bit (latest service pack) or Windows 11, a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory, at least 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD with 150 GB or more. These are the shared minimum requirements Roberts Space Industries (RSI) publishes for its games, explicitly including Squadron 42—not a separate Squadron 42 recommended-spec table.

What are the Squadron 42 PC requirements?

RSI’s Game and Launcher Requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, says that CIG games including Squadron 42 have the following minimum requirements:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Component Published minimum What to verify on your PC
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit with the latest service pack, or Windows 11 Your Windows edition is 64-bit and fully updated
Processor Quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3; RSI gives Intel i7 Haswell or later and AMD Excavator or later as examples Instruction-set support, not only core count or clock speed
Graphics DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory 4 GB VRAM and DirectX 11.1 capability
Memory 16 GB or more RAM Installed system memory, not graphics memory
Storage SSD with 150 GB or more Solid-state storage and enough free capacity after Windows and other files are counted

These figures are a compatibility floor. RSI has not published a separate Squadron 42 table labeled “recommended” with a faster processor, a particular graphics-card model or a higher memory target. Meeting the list does not guarantee a frame rate, visual preset or level of stability.

CPU: why AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 matter

The processor requirement is more specific than “four cores.” Squadron 42’s listed CPU must support the AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 instruction sets. These are processor capabilities that software can use for parallel arithmetic and other demanding workloads. A quad-core chip with a high advertised clock can still fail if it lacks one of the required instruction sets.

How to check instruction-set support

  1. Identify the exact processor model in Windows by opening Settings → System → About, or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc and selecting the Performance tab, then CPU.
  2. Compare that model with the manufacturer’s specification page. Look specifically for AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support; do not infer support from the number of cores, generation name or boost frequency.
  3. Check that the processor is at least in the class RSI describes as Intel i7 Haswell or later, or AMD Excavator or later. RSI’s wording supplies examples and a generation class, not a promise that every chip carrying a similar marketing label is equivalent.

Older systems can therefore fail before graphics performance becomes relevant. If a CPU lacks a required instruction set, adding RAM or replacing the graphics card will not correct that compatibility problem; the processor and often the motherboard platform must be replaced.

GPU: the 4 GB DirectX 11.1 floor

RSI lists a graphics card supporting DirectX 11.1 with 4 GB of graphics memory. The 4 GB figure is VRAM on the graphics card, not the 16 GB of ordinary system RAM. Integrated graphics may report shared memory, but that is not the same as having a dedicated 4 GB graphics resource and should not be assumed to satisfy the requirement.

API and driver checks

Use dxdiag in Windows to see your adapter and DirectX environment, then consult the GPU maker’s specifications for the card’s supported feature level and current driver. The separate RSI Star Citizen requirements page also discusses Direct3D 11.1 and Vulkan 1.2 driver support, but those details belong to that Star Citizen page; RSI does not present them as a distinct Squadron 42 specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RSI’s 4 GB statement is a minimum, not a recommendation for a particular card or a promise of a selected resolution and quality preset. Two cards with 4 GB can have very different processing power, cooling, power requirements and driver behavior. Without an official Squadron 42 benchmark, choosing between them requires evidence from the eventual build and performance testing rather than the minimum table alone.

RAM: 16 GB is the published minimum

The shared requirements call for 16 GB or more of system RAM. This is separate from GPU memory: a card’s 4 GB VRAM does not count toward the 16 GB system-memory requirement.

Practical memory checks

  • In Settings → System → About, read the installed RAM value. Task Manager’s Performance → Memory view also shows capacity and current use.
  • Use matched modules and the motherboard’s supported memory configuration where possible. Mixing capacities or older modules can leave a system running below its rated speed, although capacity is the first compatibility check against RSI’s list.
  • Close unnecessary applications before troubleshooting. Browser tabs, recording tools and overlays consume memory and can make a borderline system appear unstable.

RSI’s article does not establish a separate 32 GB Squadron 42 recommendation. A higher capacity may be sensible for a PC that runs several applications alongside a game, but that is a general system-planning decision, not an official Squadron 42 performance target.

Storage: does Squadron 42 require an SSD?

Yes. RSI lists an SSD with at least 150 GB for the shared CIG game requirements. A mechanical hard drive does not meet that published storage type requirement, even if it has enough total capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity and free-space wording

The same RSI requirements article recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100 GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus 10 GB of additional SSD space for the pagefile. RSI does not present that 100 GB installation note as a Squadron 42 download-size estimate. Treat the 150+ GB SSD figure as the explicit requirement and leave additional working room rather than filling the drive to its last gigabyte.

Windows reports a drive’s capacity, but installation programs need free space at the time of installation and during updates. Check Settings → System → Storage, select the intended SSD and confirm that the free-space figure remains adequate after accounting for Windows, updates, the launcher and other games.

Installing or upgrading an SSD

  1. Confirm whether your desktop or laptop accepts a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, an M.2 NVMe drive, or both. The motherboard or laptop manual determines the physical format and interface.
  2. Choose a drive whose usable capacity exceeds 150 GB; a nominally larger drive gives Windows and updates room to operate.
  3. Install the drive, initialize and format it as NTFS in Disk Management if it is new, then assign a drive letter.
  4. Set the RSI Launcher and game library to that SSD. Do not move only a shortcut while leaving the actual files on a hard drive.
  5. Keep free space available for the pagefile and future patches. If the drive falls below a comfortable margin, remove unused files or expand the storage before an update fails.

Windows support and unavailable status

RSI supports Windows 10 64-bit with the latest service pack and Windows 11 for the listed requirements. The shared requirements article says Linux and macOS are not currently supported.

Compatibility checking is currently preparatory: RSI’s “Where can I download Squadron 42?” article, updated February 4, 2026, says the game is in development and not available for download. RSI’s Get Started Checklist, updated April 16, 2026, likewise says the single-player campaign is still in development and unavailable. Neither page provides a firm release date. You can compare your hardware with the published floor, but you cannot use the launcher to install or benchmark the finished campaign yet.

Minimum versus recommended: avoid mixing Squadron 42 and Star Citizen figures

RSI’s separate Star Citizen Minimum System Requirements page, updated September 23, 2026, lists a Star Citizen recommended configuration of a quad- or eight-core CPU, a DirectX 12 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 150+ GB SSD. Those values are Star Citizen guidance. They are not a separately published Squadron 42 recommended configuration and should not be relabeled as one.

Question What RSI currently establishes
Is there an official Squadron 42 recommended table? No separate table is published in the cited requirements article.
Can Star Citizen’s 8 GB VRAM and 32 GB RAM figures be called Squadron 42 requirements? No. They are identified on the Star Citizen page and must remain attributed to Star Citizen.
Does the minimum list promise a frame rate? No. It specifies compatibility targets, not tested FPS or a graphics preset.

What the requirements do—and do not—tell you about performance

Passing a minimum specification means that your hardware matches the published class of component. It does not predict 1080p, 1440p or 4K frame rates. It also does not tell you whether a future build will sustain a chosen quality setting, because no finished Squadron 42 benchmark is provided in the cited support material.

RSI notes on its Star Citizen requirements page that performance, frame rates and stability can vary with location, server population, background applications and network conditions. Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign, so server population is not a direct campaign setting; the broader point is that the Star Citizen caveat is not a Squadron 42 benchmark. Background software and final game optimization can still affect any PC game, and the finished campaign may receive revised requirements while it remains in development.

A pre-purchase compatibility checklist

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit with the latest service pack or Windows 11.
  • CPU: quad-core class and verified AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support; check the exact model rather than relying on a family name.
  • GPU: DirectX 11.1-capable graphics card with 4 GB of VRAM; install a current driver.
  • RAM: at least 16 GB installed system memory.
  • SSD: at least 150 GB of solid-state storage, formatted NTFS where applicable, with free space beyond the bare requirement.
  • Availability: understand that RSI’s 2026 support pages still describe Squadron 42 as unavailable for download, so no official campaign benchmark can validate the checklist today.

Troubleshooting when a PC fails the list

CPU instruction-set failure

If a system-information utility or the processor manufacturer’s specifications show that AVX, AVX2 or FMA3 is missing, treat the CPU as incompatible. BIOS updates cannot add an instruction set that the silicon does not contain. A platform upgrade—processor, and possibly motherboard and memory—will be necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not enough VRAM or API support

A card with less than 4 GB of VRAM does not meet RSI’s stated floor. If the card has 4 GB but lacks the required DirectX 11.1 capability or current driver support, update the driver and recheck the manufacturer’s specifications. If the hardware itself lacks support, a graphics-card replacement is the relevant fix.

Less than 16 GB of RAM

Add compatible memory modules to reach at least 16 GB, observing the motherboard’s maximum capacity and supported memory type. If the system already has 16 GB but reports less, check whether a module is loose, disabled in firmware or reserved by hardware.

No suitable SSD or insufficient free space

Install an SSD that fits the system’s interface and move the game library there. If an existing SSD is smaller than 150 GB or nearly full, adding capacity is more reliable than deleting a few temporary files before every update. Keep the additional pagefile space RSI recommends for its launcher and Star Citizen installation guidance.

Bottom line

For the requirements RSI currently publishes, plan around a Windows 10/11 64-bit PC with a quad-core AVX/AVX2/FMA3-capable CPU, a DirectX 11.1 GPU carrying 4 GB of VRAM, 16 GB or more of system RAM and a 150+ GB SSD. Those are shared minimums, not a Squadron 42 recommended build. Since RSI’s support pages still say the campaign is in development and unavailable, use the list to identify obvious hardware gaps, but wait for final system guidance and independent testing before treating it as a performance guarantee.
