Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign; Star Citizen is the playable live environment built around a persistent universe. RSI’s support pages describe Star Citizen as accessible with an RSI account and Game Package, while Squadron 42 remained in development and unavailable to download as of February 4, 2026. RSI gives no release date on that page.
What is Squadron 42?
RSI describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. It is intended to deliver a directed story experience rather than the ongoing shared-universe play associated with Star Citizen. As of RSI’s February 4, 2026 support update, the campaign was still in development and could not be downloaded. RSI says pledges that include Squadron 42 will be eligible for download after development is complete, the game has been tested, and it has been released; those conditions are not a release date. What is Star Citizen?
Star Citizen is RSI’s playable live environment, focused on an ongoing persistent universe rather than a standalone campaign. RSI’s April 16, 2026 getting-started checklist says access requires an RSI account and a Game Package. RSI also describes Star Citizen as being in alpha, so “playable” does not mean the game is a finished release. RSI: Get Started: Checklist RSI: Public Test Universe (PTU) FAQ

Are they connected, and can you get one without the other?
RSI’s February 9, 2016 package-split explanation described Squadron 42 and Star Citizen as related modules in the same fictional universe, and said buyers could choose the campaign, the persistent universe, or both. That is useful historical context, not confirmation of current store package contents or how features will connect when Squadron 42 is released. RSI’s current pledge FAQ says a pledge supports development and that Star Citizen requires a Game Package and a computer meeting the requirements shown on RSI’s download page. A pledge that includes Squadron 42 is not the same thing as owning a released campaign: the support page says download becomes available only after development, testing, and release are complete. What has RSI said the campaign will aim to deliver?
In a 2019 letter, RSI chairman and CEO Chris Roberts described the goal as a major single-player space-adventure story, citing storytelling, relationships, battles, and cinematic set pieces as elements of the ambition. He called it “the pinnacle of the single-player story space adventure.” That statement describes the developer’s aspiration; it does not verify the final features, quality, or release contents of a game that remains unreleased in the cited support update. RSI’s older FAQ associated combat with piloting skill, making a PC flight stick or joystick a possible general accessory for space-flight gameplay.
