Fortnite returned to Google Play worldwide on March 19, 2026, Epic Games announced. This is a return to Google’s app store—not a return to Android: Fortnite remained available on Android through Epic’s own distribution options during the dispute. Players can now install it from Google Play or Epic Games Store for Android, subject to device compatibility.
What changed on March 19, 2026?
Epic announced that Fortnite was available on Google Play worldwide from March 19, coinciding with the launch of the Fortnite Showdown season. The official Google Play listing gives Android players the conventional Play Store route for finding, installing, and reinstalling the game. Availability on a particular phone or tablet can still depend on compatibility and the listing’s eligibility checks. Epic’s return announcement and its launch notice describe the worldwide release.
For the official Play Store option, search for Fortnite in Google Play and choose the listing published by Epic Games. Avoid third-party APK mirrors: Epic identifies Google Play and its own Android store as official installation routes. Epic’s Android download instructions explain both.
Why was Fortnite removed from Google Play?
The dispute began on August 13, 2020, when Epic added a direct-payment option to Fortnite that bypassed Google Play Billing. Google removed the app, saying it violated Play’s payment policies. Epic then brought an antitrust case challenging Google’s control over Android app distribution, in-app billing, developer fees, and competing app stores. The case was about the rules governing Android software and payments, not just whether one game could appear in a store. How the dispute led to Fortnite’s return
- August 13, 2020: Epic introduced a payment method intended to bypass Google Play Billing; Google removed Fortnite from Play.
- July 31, 2025: The Ninth Circuit issued an opinion upholding the relevant judgment against Google. Read the court’s opinion.
- March 4, 2026: Epic announced a settlement framework describing broader changes to Android competition and payments. Epic’s announcement sets out its account of the agreement.
- March 19, 2026: Epic announced Fortnite’s worldwide return to Google Play.
The period from the removal to the return was about five years and seven months, rather than exactly five years. Fortnite was not absent from Android for that whole period: Epic distributed it through its own Android software, and Samsung devices also had alternative distribution options. The major practical difference is that the game is now back in Google Play, a familiar installation source that does not require users to first install a separate store. What the settlement changes—and what is not settled here
Epic described the agreement as opening Android to more competition among app stores and payment systems. Its stated changes include more flexibility for developers to choose payment options and to link to external app distribution and transactions, alongside continued investment in Epic Games Store for Android. The broad significance is the possibility of more distribution and payment choices for developers and users; Fortnite’s return is the most visible consumer-facing result.

Do not confuse Epic’s announcement of a worldwide settlement framework with confirmation that every U.S. legal step has been completed. Google’s developer documentation says the parties reached a new settlement agreement on March 4, 2026, and asked the U.S. District Court to enter a revised modified injunction. That procedural description does not itself establish final court approval. Nor does the agreement mean Google Play fees have disappeared. Install Fortnite on Android
From Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for Fortnite and select the official listing from Epic Games.
- Tap Install, then launch the game and complete any in-game downloads or updates.
From Epic Games Store for Android
- Open an Android browser and go to Epic’s official Fortnite page.
- Download and install Epic’s Android store app.
- Open the app and install Fortnite. If Android prompts you, allow app installation from that source in your device settings.
If Fortnite is already installed from Epic’s store, Epic says you can keep updating it through the original source or reinstall it through Google Play. Choose one source to manage the installation rather than assuming both copies will update each other. Epic’s troubleshooting page addresses missing or unavailable Play listings.

Google Play or Epic Games Store?

Payments and rewards are not necessarily identical across stores or countries. Epic said U.S. Google Play purchases made through Epic’s payment system can earn 20% back in Epic Rewards, and that it was working to expand that option globally. That is a U.S.-specific arrangement in Epic’s March 19 announcement, not a promise that the same payment option or reward applies worldwide. Epic’s announcement explains the geographic qualification.

If Fortnite does not appear or install
- Check device compatibility. Epic lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum memory requirement. Meeting that minimum does not guarantee smooth performance or high graphics settings; installation eligibility and how well the game runs are separate questions. Check Epic’s current Android requirements for your device.
- Use Epic’s official troubleshooting guidance. A missing listing can reflect compatibility or Play Store issues; the official guide covers why the game may not appear or install. Open Epic’s Play Store troubleshooting page.
- Consider Epic’s store if Play is unavailable for your device. Download it only from Epic’s official site, not an APK mirror.
