Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →srm.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by File Server Resource Manager (FSRM), not a general game or Visual C++ runtime file. If Windows says srm.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows servicing and the FSRM or RSAT feature instead of copying a DLL from a download site.
What this file actually does
srm.dll is the Microsoft File Server Resource Manager Common Library. FSRM is a Windows Server role service for file quotas, file screening, classification, and storage reports. Microsoft’s FSRM documentation identifies Srm.dll as a required library for FSRM management classes, including the file-management job manager and classification manager.

You may encounter this file on:
- Windows Server installations with FSRM enabled
- Windows client installations with RSAT File Services Tools
- Microsoft management tools that communicate with FSRM
- Windows component stores containing architecture- or build-specific copies
The normal location is a Windows-managed directory such as C:WindowsSystem32, but the exact path depends on the Windows edition, architecture, installed features, language, and servicing state. A file named srm.dll in an application folder is not automatically legitimate.
Microsoft update manifests have included different srm.dll builds for RSAT and File Services tooling. Do not use an old version table as a download guide. The correct file must match your Windows build, architecture, feature state, and dependencies.

Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| The error began after an update or interrupted restart | Corrupted Windows component files | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| FSRM tools stopped working after a role change | FSRM was removed or partially installed | Repair or reinstall the FSRM role service |
| RSAT management tools report the error | Damaged or missing RSAT File Services Tools | Repair or reinstall the matching RSAT capability |
| Only one third-party application reports it | Broken installer or invalid dependency reference | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Windows Security shows a detection | Quarantine or false positive | Verify the file before restoring it |
| “Specified module could not be found” appears even though the file exists | A dependency is missing | Repair the component or calling feature |
| The error appears after moving an old system image | Build, architecture, or component-store mismatch | Repair Windows using a matching source |
| SFC repeatedly restores the file | Persistent servicing, disk, or replacement problem | Investigate updates, disk health, malware, and component servicing |
The wording is generic. Messages such as “srm.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start,” “Error loading srm.dll,” and 0xc000007b do not prove that the DLL itself is the only problem.
First checks before repairing anything
Identify the Windows edition
Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. Note whether the computer runs Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server.
Then open Settings → System → About and check System type. On Windows Server, use Server Manager to identify the installed release and roles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This matters because FSRM is a Windows Server role service. On a normal Windows client, the relevant component is usually RSAT rather than the server role itself.
Identify the program making the request
Read the title bar and full error message. Note whether the caller is:
- An FSRM console or administrative tool
- An RSAT File Services tool
- A third-party application
- A game or launcher
- A program starting from an application directory
There is no reliable evidence connecting srm.dll to a particular consumer game or standard desktop runtime. If a game requests it, treat that as a damaged installation or incorrectly packaged dependency until the application vendor confirms otherwise.
Check the file location and signature
If a copy of srm.dll exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description and publisher information.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
- Choose View Certificate and confirm that the signature is valid.
A copy under a Windows component directory is more plausible than one in a temporary folder, downloads folder, or unrelated application directory. Do not delete a suspicious copy before recording its location and scanning it.
You can also open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options and run a scan before allowing a questionable DLL to load.
Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from a Windows-managed location or the problem began after servicing.
Install pending updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
On Windows Server, install approved updates through your normal maintenance process and reboot during the planned maintenance window.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. DISM may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working.

A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows afterward.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the original program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it continues, use a matching repair source or investigate disk and servicing problems.
If the original program launches after the restart, the repair worked. If the same message returns, continue with the feature-specific repair below.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are provided by the full version, while reinstalling the relevant FSRM, RSAT, or application component remains the definitive fix when that component is missing.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall FSRM on Windows Server
Use this fix when the error appears in FSRM consoles, file-screening tools, quota management, or other Server administration features.
Check whether FSRM is installed
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage → Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard until the Server Roles page.
- Expand File and Storage Services.
- Expand File and iSCSI Services.
- Check whether File Server Resource Manager is selected.
- Cancel the wizard if you only needed to inspect the state.
You can also open PowerShell as administrator and run:
Get-WindowsFeature *FSRM*
Look for the installed state and the exact feature name reported by that Server release.
Install or repair the role service
In elevated PowerShell, use the feature name shown by Get-WindowsFeature. On releases that expose the standard name, the command is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Install-WindowsFeature -Name FS-Resource-Manager -IncludeManagementTools
Alternatively:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage → Add Roles and Features.
- Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
- Select the target server.
- Expand File and Storage Services → File and iSCSI Services.
- Select File Server Resource Manager.
- Select Add Features if prompted.
- Include the management tools.
- Select Install.
- Restart if requested.
After installation, open the FSRM management console and test the operation that previously failed. If the role is already installed but damaged, remove and reinstall it only after documenting existing quotas, file screens, classifications, and reports.
For an FSRM-only failure, also check Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows for FSRM-related events. Record the event ID and message before making further changes.
Fix 3: Repair RSAT File Services Tools on Windows client
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not install the Windows Server role. Repair the applicable RSAT capability instead.
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Optional features.
- Find the installed RSAT File Services or related File Services capability.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Uninstall if the capability is clearly damaged.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings → System → Optional features.
- Select View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for the applicable RSAT File Services Tools package.
- Select it and choose Next → Install.
The exact capability name varies by Windows release. Microsoft’s RSAT installation guide lists the supported installation method for the edition you are using.

Test the management tool after installation. If the package is unavailable, check Windows Update, organizational policy, and whether the installed Windows edition supports that RSAT capability.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a valid system file, but restoring a file without checking its authenticity is unsafe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
srm.dll. - Expand the event and record the path, detection name, and action.
- Confirm that the file came from a Windows or Microsoft management component directory.
- Verify the digital signature before restoring it.
- If the detection appears incorrect, submit the file or detection to your security administrator or Microsoft for analysis.
- Restore it only after that review.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
If the file was found in an application directory, do not assume it is the Microsoft component. Remove or quarantine the application if the detection is credible, then reinstall the application from its official source.
Fix 5: Repair the program that reports the error
If only one program reports srm.dll, the program may contain an invalid dependency reference or a broken installer. The application does not necessarily own this Microsoft library.

- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official website or use the original trusted installation media.
- Install the program again with an administrator account.
- Test it before restoring custom plugins, mods, or copied files.
Do not start by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Those packages are not identified as the owner of srm.dll, so they are not first-line repairs for this particular file.
Fix 6: Investigate architecture and build mismatches
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may require different component copies. On 64-bit Windows, the names System32 and SysWOW64 are counterintuitive, so do not move files between them based on the folder name.
Do not install random 32-bit and 64-bit copies to see which one works. Install the matching Microsoft feature or package for:
- The installed Windows edition
- The Windows build
- The application architecture
- The installed language and servicing state
If a legacy application is involved, ask its vendor whether it is 32-bit and whether it officially supports the current Windows release.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of srm.dll. Consider driver work only if the failure began after storage hardware changes, a system migration, disk errors, or a driver-related event in Event Viewer.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and any device category named in the event.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Avoid changing unrelated drivers as a guess. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which ones need attention; installation of drivers is performed by the full version, and only a driver implicated by the failure should be changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 srm.dll is usually wrong
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 srm.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that manually registering srm.dll repairs a missing or damaged FSRM installation. The command can instead produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.
Repair the Windows component, FSRM role service, or RSAT package that supplies the library. Use regsvr32 only when the specific software vendor or Microsoft documentation explicitly identifies a self-registering DLL and provides the correct architecture-specific command.

Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A build mismatch
- Missing dependencies
- Invalid Microsoft signatures
- A copied file that hides the real component-store problem
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching Windows installation source, the Windows Server feature installer, and Microsoft’s RSAT installation process. If a third-party application is the caller, reinstall that application from its official developer source rather than copying srm.dll into its folder.
Advanced recovery when repair fails
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the mounted installation media. The image may require the correct index for the installed edition. An arbitrary ISO is not a universal repair source.
If SFC repeatedly repairs srm.dll, investigate:
- Pending updates or servicing-stack failures
- Disk health and file-system errors
- A system-image migration
- Malware or a third-party process replacing files
- Event Viewer errors related to servicing or storage
System Restore is appropriate only when the problem clearly began after a recent change. It can roll back applications, drivers, updates, and settings installed after the restore point, so it is not a replacement for a current backup.

FAQ
Is srm.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft FSRM component when it is in an appropriate Windows-managed location and carries a valid Microsoft signature. A file with the same name in an unrelated folder requires verification.
Does a normal Windows desktop need FSRM?
Usually not. FSRM is primarily a Windows Server role service. A Windows client may need related RSAT File Services Tools for administration, while a standard home PC generally has no reason to load the library.
Should I copy srm.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Folder names do not reliably tell you which copy an application needs, and manual copying can create a version or dependency mismatch. Repair the supplying Windows feature or package.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. DISM, SFC, and repair of FSRM or RSAT are safer than replacing the visible file.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill reinstalling DirectX or Visual C++ fix this?
Not as a first-line measure. srm.dll is associated with Microsoft File Server Resource Manager, not those general-purpose runtime packages.
What should I do if the error occurs only in a game?
Verify and reinstall the game through its official launcher or vendor. There is no confirmed general connection between srm.dll and a particular consumer game, so do not download the file into the game directory.
When is the repair complete?
The repair is complete when the correct FSRM or RSAT tool, or the original application, launches without the error and Windows no longer reports integrity violations. If it still fails, record the exact message, caller path, Windows edition and build, architecture, feature state, event ID, and signature status before continuing.
