You can run SRS in Docker as an RTMP relay between a media source and YouTube, but the SRS quick-start command alone is not a 24/7 service. A continuous setup also needs an outgoing publisher configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, a host and network that stay available, and a plan for process restarts and YouTube session interruptions. For a pre-recorded video, FFmpeg can loop the input with -stream_loop -1; that repeats the file, not the whole streaming system.

How the SRS-to-YouTube pipeline works

SRS is the relay/media server in this chain. It is not the encoder and it does not provide the video source. A typical arrangement is:

Video file, camera, or production source → FFmpeg or OBS → SRS over RTMP → outgoing publisher or relay → YouTube ingest.

The first publishing hop sends media from FFmpeg or OBS to SRS. A separate outgoing leg must send that feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The SRS Docker quick start demonstrates publishing to SRS and playing the stream locally; its localhost sample is not, by itself, a complete YouTube relay configuration. SRS describes RTMP as useful for compatibility with platforms including YouTube. SRS Docker quick start · SRS RTMP documentation

What you need before starting

  • A host with Docker installed that can remain powered on and connected for the intended stream duration.
  • A media source: for a looping recording, a video file accessible to FFmpeg; for a live production, an encoder such as FFmpeg or OBS.
  • An SRS configuration and Docker image tag appropriate to the deployment you choose.
  • A YouTube live stream, its server URL, and its stream key from Live Control Room.
  • Enough dependable upstream bandwidth for the selected video and audio settings, plus monitoring and a recovery plan.

The SRS Docker page is labeled v8, while the example command on that page uses the image tag ossrs/srs:5. Check the current image tag and the matching configuration for the version you intend to deploy instead of assuming the example tag is current. The page’s docker run --rm -it command runs in the foreground and removes the container when it exits; it is a demonstration, not a production supervision strategy. SRS Docker quick start

Start SRS in Docker

1. Run the documented quick-start container

The SRS example publishes RTMP on port 1935 and also exposes HTTP and API ports for its broader demonstration:

docker run --rm -it -p 1935:1935 -p 8080:8080 -p 1985:1985 ossrs/srs:5

Use the image tag and configuration that match your chosen SRS deployment. Port 1935 is for RTMP in this example; 8080 supports HTTP-FLV/HLS examples and 1985 is the API port. A minimal RTMP relay may not need the browser playback or API ports exposed. Publish only the ports your configured protocols require, and account for firewall rules and network security on the host.

2. Publish a looped file into SRS

SRS’s quick start includes an FFmpeg example using -stream_loop -1. For a containerized FFmpeg publisher, the file must be mounted into the container and the destination must resolve to the SRS container or host as appropriate. The official sample pattern is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.flv -c copy -f flv rtmp://srs-server/live/livestream

Replace input.flv and srs-server with the actual accessible file path and SRS address. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate. This command is an ingest example: it does not supervise FFmpeg, restart Docker or the host, repair a failed network connection, or reconnect a YouTube session. For a live source, use the encoder’s normal publishing workflow instead of looping a file. SRS Docker quick start

3. Check the SRS ingest locally

Before adding YouTube, confirm that FFmpeg or OBS can publish to the SRS address and that the stream can be played through the local endpoint you configured. The SRS examples include RTMP playback as well as HTTP-FLV and HLS when those services and ports are enabled. A local playback check isolates source-to-SRS problems; it does not confirm the separate outgoing YouTube leg.

Configure the outgoing YouTube stream

Get the destination credentials

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. Configure the outbound encoder or publisher to send the SRS feed to that URL using the key.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube treats stream keys like a password and address; reset the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.

Do not put a real key in a public command, shared configuration, screenshot, or log. YouTube’s setup guidance explains the URL-and-key flow and notes that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that guidance as a promise that a single longer session will be archived. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Choose a supported ingest and encoder configuration

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the destination protocol supported by your outbound publisher and the YouTube server URL supplied for the stream. YouTube’s published guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Test the complete path before going live

  1. Start SRS and confirm its container is running.
  2. Publish the file or live source into SRS and confirm local playback through an enabled endpoint.
  3. Configure the outbound publisher with the YouTube server URL and stream key.
  4. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
  5. Only start the public broadcast when the preview and health indicators are acceptable. If the image, audio, or connection is unstable, lower the encoding demand or correct the network/source problem, then test again.

Make the deployment capable of running continuously

A container staying up is only one part of a 24/7 stream. The documented quick start does not provide an end-to-end reliability recipe or guarantee recovery. For a real unattended deployment, choose and test an operator-managed approach for each failure point:

  • Container and publisher supervision: Configure a process manager or container orchestrator to restart SRS and the publishing process when they exit. Decide how configuration and media files persist across container replacement.
  • Host and network availability: Keep the host powered, maintain dependable upstream capacity, and monitor connectivity. A restart policy cannot repair a failed internet connection or unavailable machine.
  • Logs and alerts: Track publisher exits, SRS restarts, ingest failures, disk capacity, and YouTube stream health. Set alerts that someone can act on.
  • YouTube session recovery: Determine how the outbound publisher will reconnect if YouTube drops the stream, and how an operator will handle a stream that requires a new session or intervention. Do not assume that looping the file creates seamless session turnover.
  • Long-session archive expectations: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify the current YouTube workflow for longer broadcasts rather than assuming one uninterrupted session will be archived.

When SRS is useful—and when it adds work

Approach Useful when Trade-off
FFmpeg or OBS directly to YouTube You need one source-to-YouTube path and do not need SRS’s relay or local playback functions. Fewer components, but the encoder itself must reach YouTube and be supervised.
FFmpeg or OBS through SRS You need an SRS ingest point, local playback, protocol options, or a relay architecture with multiple consumers. Adds a server and another hop to configure, monitor, and recover.

SRS’s documentation demonstrates RTMP ingest and other playback/egress formats; YouTube’s current encoder guidance should determine the outbound settings. If you only need to loop an uploaded recording to YouTube and do not need a self-hosted relay, SRS may be extra operational complexity.

Common problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg cannot publish to SRS: Check that SRS is running, port 1935 is reachable from the publisher, the RTMP URL’s application and stream name match your configuration, and any firewall allows the required traffic.
  • SRS receives a stream but local playback fails: Confirm the playback protocol is enabled and the relevant port is exposed. The quick-start’s HTTP and API ports are separate from RTMP ingest.
  • YouTube never shows a preview: Check that the outbound publisher—not just FFmpeg/OBS ingest into SRS—uses YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and that the selected URL/protocol and stream are current.
  • Stream health reports instability: Compare actual sustained upload capacity with the chosen bitrate, reduce resolution or frame rate if needed, and use YouTube’s recommended CBR and keyframe settings.
  • The loop ends or the stream stops: Confirm the input is readable and the FFmpeg command includes -stream_loop -1. Then check whether FFmpeg, SRS, the host, network, or YouTube session stopped; file looping only addresses input repetition.
  • The stream key may be compromised: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the outbound publisher’s protected configuration.
