Short answer: Choose SRS if you need its broader documented protocol and conversion options; choose Nginx RTMP if your job is an RTMP relay and you already operate Nginx. Neither is proven more reliable or faster for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Continuity depends on the whole setup: source, network, process supervision, monitoring, recovery, and YouTube ingest.
What SRS and Nginx RTMP do in a YouTube stream
Both are server software that can sit between a video source or encoder and YouTube. They do not replace YouTube: the server must send an ingest stream in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP. YouTube’s encoder settings also specify supported codecs and encoding recommendations.
The distinction matters when choosing features. SRS documents multiple protocols and conversion or delivery paths; Nginx RTMP’s project page documents RTMP stream relaying. If YouTube is the only destination and the stream is already encoded, protocol breadth may not matter. If you also need alternate delivery formats or protocols, it may.
SRS vs Nginx RTMP: the practical differences
| Decision point | SRS | Nginx RTMP |
|---|---|---|
| Documented capabilities | Its v6 introduction lists RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181, and describes converting formats such as RTMP or SRT to HLS, HTTP-FLV, or WebRTC. SRS v6 introduction | The project page documents RTMP relay using push and pull models, along with multi-worker live streaming. Nginx RTMP module |
| Best fit by requirement | Consider it when you need one of its documented protocols or conversion and delivery options, in addition to a YouTube relay. | Consider it when RTMP relay is sufficient and you prefer to keep the setup within an Nginx deployment you already operate. |
| 24/7 reliability comparison | No controlled comparison of availability or recovery is established by the cited documentation. | No controlled comparison of availability or recovery is established by the cited project page. |
| Performance comparison | No comparative throughput result is established by the cited sources. | No comparative throughput result is established by the cited sources. |
These are capability-based choices, not a performance ranking. SRS’s protocol list does not prove that it is more reliable, faster, or simpler. Likewise, familiarity with Nginx is an operational convenience, not evidence of superior streaming performance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to choose for your deployment
- Only forwarding a pre-encoded stream to YouTube: Either may fit if your chosen configuration supports the required relay path. Favor the one your team can configure, monitor, and recover confidently.
- Need protocol conversion or separate viewer delivery: Review SRS’s documented formats and confirm the exact protocol and version you intend to deploy. A separate HLS or other viewer output is not required just to send an RTMP(S) feed to YouTube.
- Already run Nginx: Nginx RTMP may fit your existing operating practices. Check the current module instructions and compatibility for your environment; the cited project page alone does not establish current release cadence, supported Nginx versions, or a high-availability recipe.
- Need a dependable 24/7 operation: Compare health checks, process supervision, restart and reconnect behavior, logs, alerts, source-failure handling, and archive plans in your actual deployment. Neither application by itself guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Match the outgoing feed to YouTube’s ingest settings
Whatever server you choose, configure the encoder and outbound connection to meet YouTube’s current requirements. Its encoder settings page recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation that should not exceed four seconds.
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube table for your exact combination. As one specific reference point, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as its recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps; that figure is not a universal target for other formats or frame rates.

Prepare bandwidth and test the full path
- Set the encoder: Select a supported codec, CBR, and an appropriate bitrate for your resolution and frame rate. Set keyframes to two seconds, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Use RTMPS where your relay configuration supports the required path: Confirm the server can forward the stream to YouTube over the intended secure ingest connection.
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. Account for all outbound streams sharing the connection.
- Test before relying on it: Start a test stream, check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and verify the relay, source continuity, reconnect behavior, and monitoring before leaving it unattended.
Plan continuity, recovery, and archives separately
A 24/7 stream is an operating system, not just a running server process. Keep the source available, supervise the relay process, monitor network and YouTube ingest health, and decide how an operator will be alerted and how service will restart after a failure. Test what happens when the source stops, the network drops, or YouTube disconnects the ingest; the cited feature summaries do not establish that either server automatically handles every such failure.
Archive behavior also needs a plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance. This does not guarantee that an unbroken 24-hour stream will be archived as one video. If keeping a recording matters, arrange local recording or deliberate stream segmentation and check YouTube’s current limits.

Version and configuration checks
The cited SRS introduction is versioned v6 documentation and identifies version 6.0 as stable, while also containing a note that appears to refer to development status. SRS documentation is also available for v5 and v8, so do not copy commands or configuration across versions without checking the docs for the version you deploy. The SRS HLS documentation describes RTMP publication with HLS playback; it is relevant only if you also need HLS output, not simply to relay a stream to YouTube.
For Nginx RTMP, verify current installation instructions and compatibility against the project’s canonical repository. The cited project summary does not provide enough evidence to give a universal build command or deployment recipe.
