If your SRS stream reaches YouTube but has no sound, trace the audio through each handoff: capture or input, FFmpeg stream mapping, SRS processing, and YouTube ingest. First confirm that the incoming feed contains audio; then inspect the actual FFmpeg command and final output. A codec change cannot restore audio that was never captured, was unmapped, or was explicitly disabled.
Find where the audio disappears
Check the signal in order rather than changing codec settings at random. Note your SRS version, input and output protocols, and whether SRS is running an FFmpeg transcode engine. Those details determine which configuration applies.
- Source or capture: Does the file, device, or incoming stream contain the intended audio?
- FFmpeg input and mapping: Is FFmpeg reading that audio stream and selecting it for output?
- SRS processing: Is SRS forwarding the audio, transcoding it, or disabling it?
- YouTube ingest and preview: Does the final stream contain an audio track in a format and layout suitable for the configured ingest protocol?
At each boundary, verify audio independently. A stream appearing in YouTube does not prove that its audio track arrived too.
Check the source before changing codecs
For a file or incoming stream, confirm it actually has an audio track. For live capture, check that the expected microphone, mixer, desktop-audio source, or other input is selected and active. If the signal entering FFmpeg or SRS is silent or has no audio track, downstream encoding options cannot recreate the program audio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the source does contain audio, move downstream and establish whether the track is still present after FFmpeg and SRS. That separates a capture fault from a mapping or server-configuration fault.
Inspect FFmpeg input selection and output mapping
Review FFmpeg’s stream listing and log, then inspect the command that creates the stream sent onward. Confirm that it reads audio from the intended input and maps the intended audio stream to the output. With multiple inputs or tracks, do not assume FFmpeg has selected the one you want. Also check that the command does not explicitly suppress audio.
Before changing codec parameters, establish whether the generated output contains audio. The right mapping depends on the inputs and the command in use, so there is no single command line that can safely be prescribed for every FFmpeg build and setup.

Determine whether SRS is transcoding
SRS transcoding is optional. In the documented transcoding workflow, an encoder publishes RTMP to SRS, and SRS can fork FFmpeg to transcode and publish to SRS or another server. In a different workflow, FFmpeg may publish directly to SRS and copy tracks instead. Identify which workflow is active before editing SRS settings.

acodecselects the audio codec or handling mode. SRS’s v3 configuration reference documentscopyas passing the audio through, while an AAC encoder transcodes it. A copied track retains its input codec, so copying alone does not ensure compatibility with the destination.abitratesets the audio bitrate.asample_ratesets the audio sample rate.achannelssets the channel count.acodec andisables audio output, resulting in a video-only transcode.
These settings and examples are version-scoped: the SRS FFmpeg configuration reference is for v3, while the separate FFmpeg workflow page is archived v5 documentation. Check the documentation for the SRS version you actually run rather than assuming an older example matches a current installation.

Match the output to YouTube and its ingest protocol
For YouTube RTMP or RTMPS audio, YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3. Its recommended advanced settings are protocol-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for every SRS output:
| Channel layout | Codec guidance for RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube recommended audio settings |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps bitrate |
| 5.1 surround | AAC | 48 kHz sample rate; 384 kbps bitrate |
YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 channel layouts. Other layouts may convert unreliably to stereo, so confirm the output channel layout rather than relying only on a codec name. If you use a copy mode, inspect the copied track’s codec, sample rate, bitrate, and layout against the intended destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYouTube recommends RTMPS, but transport security does not itself fix absent audio. Verify the YouTube ingest URL and stream key separately from the audio path.

Keep SRS HLS issues separate from YouTube RTMP issues
If the silent playback is from SRS’s HLS delivery rather than YouTube ingest, use the HLS-specific guidance. SRS documentation says audio-only HLS requires AAC and identifies H.264 with AAC or MP3 for its HLS path. It also describes possible audio corruption during FLV-to-MPEG-TS timestamp conversion in connection with sample-rate and timestamp behavior, including an HLS-specific note about hls_dts_directly.
Do not apply that HLS timestamp option as a general remedy for a silent YouTube RTMP or RTMPS stream; it addresses a different delivery path.

Before an event, test with audio and video representative of the intended stream. Check that the preview has sound before starting, and monitor stream health and messages while live. If the preview remains silent, check the same boundaries again: source, FFmpeg input and mapping, SRS output, and YouTube ingest. A successful connection or visible video does not establish that audio is present.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No audio track at the input | Capture or upstream source | Confirm the selected device or source is active and that the incoming file or stream contains audio. |
| Input has audio, but FFmpeg output does not | FFmpeg input selection or mapping | Review stream listings, input selection, output mapping, and any option that suppresses audio. |
| FFmpeg output has audio, but SRS’s transcode does not | SRS transcode configuration | Inspect the generated command and audio options, especially whether acodec an disables output. |
| Audio is present but YouTube is silent or handles it incorrectly | Destination codec, protocol, or channel layout | Confirm the final output codec and layout for RTMP/RTMPS; use YouTube’s guidance for the chosen mono, stereo, or 5.1 output. |
| YouTube has audio, but SRS HLS playback is silent or corrupted | SRS HLS path | Check the HLS-specific audio requirements and timestamp-conversion guidance; do not treat it as an RTMP ingest fix. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an SRS and FFmpeg setup. It does not repair an existing SRS-to-YouTube audio fault, and it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
