If srvsvc.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the Server service rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is called Server Service DLL and belongs to the Windows SMB file-sharing stack. It supports the Windows Server service, also known as LanmanServer, which handles shared folders, printers, named pipes, and related network functions. An application may report the error while starting, but the underlying problem can be a damaged Windows component.

Before you begin
Do not download srvsvc.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded copy may contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the component store that Windows actually depends on. It can also leave you with a DLL that looks correct but is not an authentic Microsoft file.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, System Restore, and Windows repair installation. Microsoft documents the file as part of the SMB server binaries under %windir%System32 in its SMB troubleshooting documentation.

Before making repairs, note:
- The exact error message.
- The application or game that displayed it.
- The path shown in the message, if any.
- Your Windows edition and build.
- Whether shared folders, printers, mapped drives, or other network resources also stopped working.
- Whether Windows Security recently quarantined a file.
If Windows will not start normally, try the same steps from Safe Mode with Networking or Windows Recovery options where appropriate.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed update, interrupted servicing operation, or incomplete component repair can make a protected Windows DLL unavailable. Updating Windows is the least invasive first step.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or network share again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
If the same error appears after the restart, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not download the DLL as a shortcut.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when Windows system files are missing or corrupted.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and let the scan reach 100 percent.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart the computer and test the application, Server service, or network share.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf SFC says it found no integrity violations, the file may not be the real cause. Check the service and path in the next sections.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the files, review the log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not replace srvsvc.dll manually simply because SFC reported a repair failure.
Running DISM and SFC by hand can make it difficult to see which component is damaged and which repair changed it. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate Windows repair path.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 3: Check the Server service
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Repairing the DLL will not restore file sharing if the Windows Server service is disabled, stopped, or unable to start.
Check it in Services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Server in the list.
- Check the Status column.
- Double-click Server to inspect its configuration.
If the service is stopped, select Start and see whether it starts successfully. Do not change the startup type blindly on a work, school, or security-hardened computer. An administrator may have intentionally disabled file sharing.
If starting the service produces an error such as “The specified module could not be found,” that historically has been associated with a missing or corrupt Srvsvc.dll, but the message can also involve service dependencies or broader Windows damage. Continue with DISM and SFC if you have not already run them.
Query the service from Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc.exe query LanmanServer
For its configuration, run:
sc.exe qc LanmanServer
These commands show whether the service is running and provide configuration details. Microsoft documents sc.exe query in its service command documentation.
If the service runs but sharing still fails, check permissions, firewall rules, storage health, SMB settings, and the relevant Event Viewer logs. A repaired DLL cannot solve every SMB problem.
Fix 4: Verify the expected file path and architecture
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The normal native location is:
%windir%System32srvsvc.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. Windows normally redirects 32-bit system files to SysWOW64. Those directories are not interchangeable, as Microsoft explains in its File System Redirector documentation.
To inspect the native path:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Locate
srvsvc.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures and Details tabs.
The file should identify Microsoft Windows information rather than an unrelated application. If the error names a copy in a user profile, a game folder, or an application directory, do not overwrite that copy immediately. A similarly named file outside the normal Windows directory may be an incompatible substitute or suspicious file.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Windows build, architecture, language, and servicing state all matter. The historical version and size examples associated with this filename are not a complete current compatibility list.
If the file is absent from System32, return to the DISM and SFC repair sequence. Protected Windows files should normally be restored through component servicing.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove a file after detecting malware or suspect behavior. Do not disable antivirus protection just to restore srvsvc.dll.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
srvsvc.dllor Windows system files.
Microsoft describes this history in its Protection History guidance.
Only restore a quarantined file after confirming all of the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- It is the genuine Microsoft file.
- It was located in the expected Windows directory.
- The device has been scanned and is not showing signs of malware.
- The detection is a confirmed false positive rather than a real threat.
If Windows Security removed the file as malicious, do not download another copy. Run a full malware scan, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Restoring a real threat can expose the computer again, as Microsoft warns in its virus and threat protection guidance.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup program, software installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
It rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched.

- Select Next.
- Pick a restore point dated before the
srvsvc.dllproblem began. - Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the operation.
Use Microsoft’s System Restore instructions if the recovery wizard presents different wording.
System Restore may not be available, or its restore points may not include the damaged component. If the problem remains, proceed to a repair reinstall rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.
Fix 7: Repair Windows without deleting your files
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, Windows itself may have more severe servicing corruption.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
Some Windows 11 installations provide a built-in repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. The option is not shown on every installation.
Repair with installation media
If the built-in option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose the in-place upgrade or repair path that preserves personal files and applications. Back up important data first. Carefully check the choices before proceeding because a clean installation is substantially more destructive.
Microsoft’s guidance for this process is available under reinstalling Windows with installation media. Its Windows recovery options explain the difference between repair and more destructive recovery methods.
A repair reinstall replaces damaged Windows components using a matching Windows source. It is a safer final repair than taking srvsvc.dll from another PC.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A driver is not the direct source of srvsvc.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the failure began with a network adapter, storage device, network stack, or SMB connectivity problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Device Manager as follows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or reinstall the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
Do not remove a working network driver without having a replacement or recovery plan. If the problem is specifically limited to file sharing, first confirm the Server service, firewall, permissions, and SMB configuration.
Manually identifying the correct driver among several hardware revisions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing which drivers it detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or Windows repair when the component itself is damaged.
What not to do
Do not run regsvr32 srvsvc.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. srvsvc.dll is a Windows Server service component, not an ordinary COM or ActiveX library that users normally register.
Running this command is not a standard repair:
regsvr32 srvsvc.dll
It will not repair a corrupted component store and can produce another confusing error. Microsoft explains the registration scenarios for Regsvr32, but does not instruct users to register srvsvc.dll.

Do not mix up application repair with Windows repair
If only one application reports the file and Windows file sharing works normally, the application may have a damaged dependency or may be displaying a misleading loader error. Update or reinstall that application from its official source after repairing Windows.
If the Server service, shared folders, printers, and mapped drives are also failing, treat the issue as a Windows component or SMB problem rather than an isolated application installation.
Do not enable SMB features blindly
Windows Features may list SMB-related components, but enabling legacy SMB features is not a general fix for srvsvc.dll. Do not turn on older protocols merely because a share stopped working. First repair Windows and identify the actual compatibility requirement.
Why the error appears
The wording varies by Windows version and by the program that requested the file. You may see:

|---|---|---|
| Windows update or interrupted repair | Servicing corruption | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Antivirus action | Quarantine or malware remediation | Protection History, scan, then DISM/SFC |

| Only one application fails | Application dependency or damaged installation | Repair Windows, then reinstall that application |
| Network sharing also fails | Broader SMB, firewall, permission, or service problem | Check Server service and SMB diagnostics |
The “not designed to run on Windows” wording can indicate corruption, wrong architecture, tampering, or a bad dependency. It does not mean that a newer DLL from the internet is the solution.
FAQ
Is srvsvc.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Server Service DLL, part of the Microsoft Windows operating system and associated with the SMB server and Windows Server service.
Where should srvsvc.dll be?
The normal native location is:
%windir%System32srvsvc.dll
On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that System32 and SysWOW64 are interchangeable. The correct file depends on Windows architecture and build.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is srvsvc.dll a virus?
The genuine Microsoft file is not inherently a virus. A copy with the same name in an unexpected directory, an invalid signature, or a file recently quarantined by antivirus deserves investigation. Check its path, publisher, signature, and Windows Security history.
Can I copy it from another computer?
This is not a recommended general repair. The other computer must match the Windows build, architecture, language, and servicing state, and the file must be authentic. DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an in-place repair is safer.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually not. srvsvc.dll is a Windows component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Repair Windows first.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. If the issue continues, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair installation.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I provide when asking for further help?
Include the exact error text, Windows edition and build, path shown in the message, affected application, Server service status, relevant Event Viewer details, and whether shared folders, printers, or mapped drives also fail. Do not upload a replacement DLL from an unverified source.
