For PC games, an SSD is the better home for Windows and the titles you play regularly: it can shorten loading and reduce waits for game data. An HDD is still useful for bulk storage and games you play less often. The main expected gain is less waiting—not a guaranteed increase in frame rate.

Do games load faster on an SSD?

Usually, yes: SSDs are the better choice when a game needs to load assets quickly or access data during play. Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming-PC guidance recommends an SSD for Windows and games, and describes an HDD as better suited to bulk storage. The size of the difference depends on the game, its data-access patterns, the rest of the PC, and test conditions; there is no single load-time multiplier that applies to every game.

One PCWorld comparison published in 2025 reported that Marvel Rivals took over seven times longer to load from an HDD in its tested setup, while Cyberpunk 2077 took almost a minute longer on HDD than SSD. Those are results for the comparison’s setup, not predictions for every PC or player.

Does an SSD increase FPS?

Do not buy an SSD expecting a general frame-rate boost. Storage primarily affects loading and data access; FPS depends on several system resources and configurations. Steam’s hardware performance guidance notes that delays in disk responses during gameplay can cause pauses, but that is different from a guaranteed increase in average FPS. A faster drive may help when storage is the source of a wait or interruption; it will not remove a CPU, memory, or graphics bottleneck.

SSD vs. HDD for PC games: what each is for

Storage Best fit Trade-off
SSD Windows and games you play regularly; titles where quick loads and data access matter Choose an interface and form factor your PC supports; the evidence does not establish a universal model, capacity, or price.
HDD Bulk storage, large files, and less frequently played games where slower access is acceptable Longer waits can occur in games that load slowly from an HDD; the difference varies by game and system.

A mixed setup is a practical compromise: keep Windows and active games on an SSD, and use an HDD for capacity if you need it. Microsoft’s storage guidance makes this same distinction between SSD use for Windows and games and HDD use for bulk storage.

SATA or NVMe: choose what your PC supports

“SSD” does not name one connection type. SATA and NVMe SSDs are different options, and the right one depends on your PC’s supported interface, available drive bay or M.2 slot, form factor, and budget. Check the motherboard or PC specifications and the space available before buying; without those details, no single drive type or model can be recommended for every gaming PC.

NVMe matters especially in the context of DirectStorage, but a faster interface by itself does not guarantee a dramatic improvement in every game. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a way for supported games to make fuller use of high-speed storage while keeping CPU overhead low. Whether that changes what you notice depends on the game and workload.

What DirectStorage changes—and what it does not

Microsoft’s DirectStorage documentation describes the technology as enabling games to use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs, with high throughput and minimal CPU overhead. UL’s 3DMark Storage Benchmark description says DirectStorage can reduce overhead when loading game data. It also characterizes its feature test as a near-best-case scenario that removes variables such as asset management and other GPU work.

  • UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest

That benchmark context matters: a feature test is not a promise of the improvement a player will see in an ordinary game. DirectStorage support in the technology stack does not mean every game uses it or behaves alike. Microsoft also discusses game installation and maintenance in its game installation guidance; the available evidence does not establish comprehensive adoption across current games.

Upgrade priorities for a gaming PC

  1. Move Windows and frequently played games off an HDD. If they are still on an HDD, a compatible SSD is the most direct storage upgrade for shorter waits in affected workloads.
  2. Confirm compatibility before choosing SATA or NVMe. Check your PC’s supported interface, form factor, free slot or bay, and budget.
  3. Keep the HDD for capacity if it still meets your needs. Use it for bulk files or games you play less often when slower access is acceptable.
  4. Set expectations around loading and interruptions, not FPS. Storage can matter when disk response is holding up a game, but frame rate has other potential limits. Steam’s software performance guidance also treats performance as dependent on system and software conditions.
  5. Treat DirectStorage as game- and workload-dependent. Buying an NVMe SSD alone does not ensure a particular game will use DirectStorage or load dramatically faster.
