Stacey Waaka is a Black Fern, but the available reporting does not verify that she has explained “bringing femininity to the rugby field” in those words. What it does document is her scrunchie project and encouragement for women to express their identities. The distinction matters: an explicit on-field statement about lipstick belongs to US rugby player Ilona Maher, not Waaka.
What is actually reported about Stacey Waaka?
World Rugby’s 2025 New Zealand team media guide identifies Waaka as a Black Fern. A New Zealand Herald profile reports on her scrunchie project and her encouragement for women to express their identities. The profile connects her off-field work with self-expression; it does not establish that she made a particular statement about femininity while playing.
Waaka is also referred to in that reporting as Stacey Fluhler, her married name. The distinction between a documented project and a specific on-field explanation is important: one supports a broader self-expression theme, while the other would require a verified statement from Waaka herself.
Who made the on-field lipstick comment?
The explicit quote about bringing femininity onto the rugby field belongs to Ilona Maher, a US rugby player. In an interview with mindbodygreen, Maher said she wanted to show that a powerful rugby athlete could also wear lipstick on the field. That is Maher’s view, not a Waaka quotation, and it should not be used to supply Waaka’s motives.

Can you be feminine and play rugby?
Yes. Rugby participation does not require a player to adopt one way of presenting herself. Some players may choose makeup, hair accessories or other forms of personal expression; others may not. Those choices do not change whether someone belongs on the field or how seriously her athletic ability should be taken.
A 2024 qualitative study in Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health examines women rugby players’ experiences of gender, embodiment, tackle performance and safety. It describes restrictive gender expectations, the devaluing of women’s athletic achievements and unequal playing conditions, while also discussing how players’ agency can challenge those norms. Its findings provide context for why identity and presentation can matter in rugby, but they are not evidence of Waaka’s personal beliefs.

What can be said about Waaka’s wider rugby role?
A profile published by Now to Love / Woman’s Day on February 19, 2026 reported that Waaka was preparing for a Warriors debut and described her as supporting younger Black Ferns players. That is a dated snapshot of her circumstances at the time of publication, not confirmation of her current team status.
