For Versus, the Gnasher is the strongest starting pick for close fights; the Breechshot offers a high precision payoff, and the Prototype Lancer looks like the most adaptable rifle.

This ranking weighs the roles and handling traits described by The Coalition. It is a practical starting point, not a claim that one weapon wins every matchup. The order is most useful as a provisional Versus guide; Horde Siege and Campaign have different considerations.

Gnasher — best provisional close-range Versus pick
The Coalition uses sliding into a close-range “gib” as an example of the Gnasher’s role. Its capacity is six shells, down from the previous eight, and it supports round-by-round active reload: you can load one or two shells without completing a full reload cycle. Those details make it the clearest close-fight choice in the available descriptions, though its release-build performance remains unverified.

Breechshot — best precision payoff
The Coalition describes the Breechshot as capable of a one-shot headshot kill in PvP. That is a developer design claim, not an independently confirmed match result. It could reward accurate aim and a clean sightline, but the available description does not establish its fire rate, ammo economy, or hit rate relative to other weapons.

The developer calls it “a great all round rifle,” citing a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers. That makes it a sensible adaptable pick on paper, not a proven universal best.

The Hammerburst fires an accurate six-round burst, and a perfect active reload increases its rate of fire. It looks suited to players who can make controlled bursts count. No comparative damage or time-to-kill figures are available to establish how it fares against other rifles.

The official description says it is deadly up close and usable at mid-to-long range if the shooter can manage its strong recoil. That trade-off makes it a skill-dependent alternative, not a simple upgrade over the Prototype Lancer.

Which gun should you use in Versus?
Versus gives players the same starting loadout and disables weapon mods; Power Weapons are acquired from the map. Choose based on the fight you expect and the weapon’s job:
- Close-range fights: Start with the Gnasher, whose close-range role is the clearest in the official gameplay description.
- Precision and headshots: Consider the Breechshot if you can line up accurate shots; its stated PvP headshot claim is not an independent performance result.
- A flexible rifle: Try the Prototype Lancer as the all-round candidate described by the developer.
- Controlled bursts: The Hammerburst may suit deliberate aim and players who can land its burst.
- Recoil management: The Lancer MK1 / Retro Lancer offers a high-risk option for players confident controlling its kick.
These are role-based recommendations, not measured match-up advice. The Coalition says E-Day uses simulated projectile ballistics and travel time, so at range you may need to lead a moving target.

How Horde Siege and Campaign change the ranking
Horde Siege: account for mods and class progression
Horde Siege supports weapon mods and class progression. Weapon parts fund mods, and the developer says some mods can change a weapon’s functionality. A weapon’s value therefore depends on its mod build, class role, mission length, and whether the squad needs to defend, move, or extract. The Versus order above does not account for those variables.
Campaign: no separate ranking is established
Official descriptions confirm weapon mods in Campaign, but do not provide enough comparative campaign-specific weapon evidence to rank these choices separately. The Versus-oriented order should not be treated as a campaign tier list.
What the official weapon descriptions establish—and what they do not
The Coalition’s July 31, 2026 gameplay update describes weapon handling, active reload changes, movement, and simulated ballistics. The June 9, 2026 Official Xbox Podcast transcript adds context on the intended reload tension: gameplay director Matt Searcy said, “It adds to the tension of reloading your weapon, how you manage your weapon, whether or not you’re going to jam it, get extra damage.” That explains the design aim; it is not an independent test of weapon balance.
The descriptions do not supply comparable damage, DPS, range, accuracy, time-to-kill, or win-rate measurements. Adjectives such as “deadly” and “accurate” are not enough to prove that one gun outperforms another. A reliable post-launch comparison would need to hold mode and build constant and assess engagement distance, shots to down or kill, recoil, reload and active-reload payoff, ammunition, mobility, skill demands, pickup access, and— in Horde Siege—class and mod interactions.
Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for October 6, 2026, three days after this article’s October 3, 2026 reference date. Until the game is available to assess in comparable conditions, the ranking should be read as a guide to official pre-launch weapon roles rather than a live-build tier list.
