Stadia Controller on Steam: Change These Settings to Make It Work

Connect the Stadia Controller by USB, enable generic-controller support in Steam, force Steam Input on for the game, and apply a standard gamepad layout. Bluetooth requires a controller converted before Google’s December 31, 2024 deadline.

To make a Stadia Controller work with Steam, connect it by USB first, enable generic-controller support in Steam → Settings → Controller, then force Steam Input on for the affected game and apply a standard gamepad layout. Steam Input is usually the compatibility layer that translates the controller into Xbox-style input that PC games understand.

Bluetooth also works, but only if the controller was converted before Google’s Bluetooth-conversion deadline of December 31, 2024. An unconverted controller may still work over USB, but there is no longer a safe assumption that Google’s official conversion route is available.

Quick fix

  1. Connect the controller directly with a USB-C data cable.
  2. Open Steam → Settings → Controller.
  3. Enable support for Generic Controller, Generic Gamepad, or the similarly named generic-controller option.
  4. In your Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties → Controller.
  5. Select Enable Steam Input or Use Steam Input.
  6. Open the game’s controller layout and apply Gamepad, Standard Gamepad, or a recommended community layout.
  7. Relaunch the game and test the sticks, triggers, buttons, and D-pad.

Steam’s exact wording changes between client versions, so look for the setting that explicitly forces Steam Input on rather than relying on Default.

Before changing Steam settings

  • Charge the controller.
  • Use a USB cable that supports data; charging-only cables will not work.
  • Try a direct USB port rather than a hub.
  • Update Steam.
  • Close other remapping tools such as DS4Windows, reWASD, XOutput, InputMapper, or manufacturer controller software.
  • Launch the game through Steam if Steam Input is supposed to manage it.
  • For wireless play, confirm that the controller was already converted to Bluetooth mode.

Google says computers using Bluetooth need a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. Its controller guidance also confirms that USB-C remains a supported connection method: Google’s Stadia Controller instructions.

  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Set up the controller over USB

  1. Turn on Steam.
  2. Plug the Stadia Controller into the computer with a USB-C data cable.
  3. Press the Stadia button if it does not wake automatically.
  4. Open Steam → Settings → Controller.
  5. Check the detected-controller list.
  6. If Steam offers generic-controller support, enable it.
  7. Open the game’s controller layout and apply a gamepad template.

Steam may identify the device as a generic controller instead of displaying a polished Stadia Controller name. That is not necessarily a problem. The important question is whether Steam detects inputs in its controller test or layout editor.

Valve’s player documentation places controller support under Steam → Settings → Controller and specifically recommends enabling generic-controller support for generic devices: Valve’s Steam controller setup guide.

Enable Steam Input for the game

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the game and select Properties.
  3. Open Controller.
  4. Choose Enable Steam Input, Use Steam Input, or the equivalent option.
  5. Close the window.
  6. Open the game’s controller layout and apply a gamepad template.
  7. Exit and relaunch the game.

Global detection and per-game behavior are separate. Steam can see the controller in its settings while an individual game still has Steam Input disabled.

Steam Input can translate the Stadia Controller’s signals into regular Xbox-style gamepad input. That is why it often fixes a controller that works in Steam menus but is ignored by a game expecting XInput. Valve explains this input translation in its Steam Input developer documentation.

Choose the right controller layout

Start with Gamepad, Standard Gamepad, or Gamepad with Joystick. If the game has an official configuration, use that first. Otherwise:

  1. Open Browse Configs.
  2. Check Recommended.
  3. Try a highly rated community layout.
  4. If necessary, apply a generic gamepad template and bind missing controls manually.

Avoid starting with a keyboard-and-mouse layout unless the game has no controller support. Keyboard mappings can make menus function, but analog movement and camera control usually feel worse. Steam supports official, community, personal, and template configurations; Valve documents these choices in its configuration browser guide.

Why the game shows Xbox button prompts

This is expected when Steam Input presents the controller as an Xbox-style gamepad. Follow the prompts shown by the game:

  • Stadia A generally corresponds to Xbox A.
  • Stadia B generally corresponds to Xbox B.
  • Stadia X generally corresponds to Xbox X.
  • Stadia Y generally corresponds to Xbox Y.

Some games hard-code Xbox or PlayStation icons, so Steam cannot change every on-screen glyph. The Stadia Assistant and Capture buttons also no longer provide their original Stadia functions.

Should Steam Input be enabled or disabled?

Use an A/B test rather than assuming one setting works for every game.

Use Steam Input enabled when:

  • The game expects Xbox/XInput controls.
  • The controller works in Steam but not in the game.
  • The game detects the controller but buttons are missing.
  • The game has no useful native controller configuration.
  • You need custom mappings.

Try Steam Input disabled when:

  • The game natively supports generic DirectInput controllers.
  • Steam Input creates duplicate or double inputs.
  • The game’s own controller remapper works correctly.
  • An anti-cheat system or external launcher reacts badly to Steam’s virtual controller layer.

When testing the alternative, fully close and relaunch the game. Valve notes that configurations can fail when a game does not support the selected input style and recommends trying another configuration: Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance.

Check whether Steam Input is active

  • The controller appears in Steam’s controller settings.
  • Inputs respond in the layout editor.
  • The game’s controller page shows an active configuration.
  • The game displays controller prompts instead of keyboard prompts.
  • The Steam Overlay opens in-game with Shift+Tab.

If the overlay does not open, go to Steam → Settings → In Game and enable the Steam Overlay. Also check the game’s own overlay setting, then restart Steam and relaunch the game. The overlay is important to relevant Steam Input configurations, and Valve recommends checking it when controller layouts fail.

Pair a Bluetooth-enabled Stadia Controller

This procedure applies only to controllers that were previously converted to Bluetooth mode. Google’s official conversion window ended on December 31, 2024. Conversion was permanent, disabled the original Stadia Wi-Fi functionality, and cannot be reversed.

  1. Turn off or disconnect the controller from its current device.
  2. Hold Stadia + Y for about two seconds.
  3. Wait for the status light to flash orange.
  4. Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings.
  5. Select the device containing Stadia.
  6. Complete pairing.
  7. Open Steam and repeat the generic-controller and per-game Steam Input steps above.

Bluetooth mode uses Bluetooth Low Energy. Wired headphones connected to the controller do not work in Bluetooth mode. Google’s current instructions are available at Google Support.

If Bluetooth pairs but Steam does not respond

  1. Remove the Stadia device from the operating system’s Bluetooth list.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
  3. Put the controller into pairing mode again.
  4. Pair it again.
  5. Restart Steam.
  6. Test the controller over USB.

If USB works but Bluetooth does not, investigate the Bluetooth adapter, drivers, interference, and power-management settings before changing Steam layouts.

  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.

If Steam detects it but the game does not

  1. Confirm the game is launched from Steam.
  2. Force Steam Input on in the game’s Properties → Controller page.
  3. Apply a standard gamepad layout.
  4. Close the game completely and relaunch it.
  5. Disconnect other controllers.
  6. Disable third-party remappers and competing overlays.
  7. Test with USB.
  8. Try Steam Input disabled if the game supports generic controllers natively.
  9. Check whether an external launcher is starting the game separately.

EA, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar, and similar launchers can interfere with Steam Overlay or Steam Input. Do not stack Steam Input with an external XInput emulator unless you deliberately need both; duplicate virtual controllers commonly cause double inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only some buttons work

Reapply a standard gamepad layout and check each control:

  • Left stick mapped to movement.
  • Right stick mapped to camera control.
  • Triggers assigned as analog inputs where the game supports them.
  • D-pad assigned as a D-pad, not four unrelated keyboard keys.
  • No duplicate bindings or incomplete action sets.

Test a second Steam game. If the same buttons fail everywhere, the issue is probably the connection, layout, or controller. If only one game fails, its input implementation or launcher is the more likely cause.

If controls work but feel wrong

Start with the default deadzone and increase it in small steps only if the stick drifts. Excessive deadzone reduces the usable range of the stick. Also check for acceleration or sensitivity settings, and keep triggers analog for driving, racing, and shooting games.

Avoid mouse emulation when the game supports a real gamepad. Unintended keyboard or mouse input can also make a game switch constantly between controller and keyboard prompts. Steam’s developer documentation covers deadzones, acceleration, and sensitivity as important Steam Input variables.

Steam Deck, Linux, and non-Steam games

Steam Deck

Pair an eligible controller through the Deck’s Bluetooth settings, then open the game’s controller layout from the game page or overlay. Apply a gamepad template before trying desktop or keyboard mappings. If Bluetooth is unclear, test with USB-C. You can also compare Game Mode and Desktop Mode if detection differs.

Linux

Linux may require additional udev configuration for controller access or firmware-related operations. Google’s support page includes Linux-specific guidance and references vendor ID 1fc9; do not apply those rules on Windows.

Epic, Game Pass, and other non-Steam games

The Steam fix is most reliable when the game is launched and managed by Steam. Non-Steam games may require adding the executable to Steam, launching the relevant launcher through Steam, or using a separate remapping tool. External launchers and anti-cheat systems can limit what Steam Input can do.

When Steam settings cannot fix it

Stop treating the problem as a Steam configuration issue if the controller fails to appear over USB with multiple known-good data cables and ports, disconnects everywhere, has severe stick drift, or will not hold a charge. An unconverted controller may also be limited to USB in 2026. Google’s Bluetooth conversion was permanent and time-limited; a factory reset does not restore Stadia Wi-Fi mode. See Google’s controller troubleshooting guidance.
