Stadia Pro’s May 2020 Games and Wireless Controller Support on PC

In May 2020, Stadia Pro added four games to its lineup, and Google announced wireless play with the Stadia Controller in Chrome on PC. The wireless feature used a linking code on Stadia.com; it was not Bluetooth pairing. Stadia has since shut down, so Pro games are no longer available through the service. A converted Stadia Controller can still use Bluetooth, but Google’s conversion deadline passed on December 31, 2024.

Which games did Stadia Pro add in May 2020?

Google’s May 29, 2020 update named four games that became available to Stadia Pro subscribers during May: PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, The Turing Test, and SteamWorld Heist. The post also listed 12 previously available games that subscribers could still add to their collections at that time. These were historical Stadia Pro offerings, not games that can now be claimed through Stadia.

  • Destiny 2: The Collection
  • PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS
  • GRID
  • Serious Sam Collection
  • Spitlings
  • Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks)
  • SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
  • SteamWorld Dig 2
  • SteamWorld Heist
  • Zombie Army 4: Dead War
  • The Turing Test
  • GYLT

The same post looked ahead to June, announcing Get Packed, Little Nightmares, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, SUPERHOT, Panzer Dragoon Remake, and The Elder Scrolls Online. Google gave June 16 as the date for The Elder Scrolls Online; these were June announcements, not May additions. See Google’s May 2020 Stadia update.

What did wireless controller support on PC mean?

Google Director of Product Andrey Doronichev wrote in the May 29 update: “We added support for wireless play using the Stadia Controller in a Chrome browser.” The feature let users play Stadia in Chrome without connecting the controller to the computer by USB: they paired it through Stadia.com by entering the linking code shown on screen.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

This was Stadia-specific wireless play, not ordinary Bluetooth support. The announcement did not mean the controller could then pair through a PC’s standard Bluetooth settings. Google’s later Bluetooth conversion feature was a separate capability.

Can you still play Stadia or start a Pro subscription?

No. Google says Stadia’s game servers shut down on January 18, 2023. Its store is closed, commerce is disabled, and new Stadia Pro subscriptions cannot be started. The May 2020 games list and Chrome wireless-play announcement describe a discontinued service. Google’s Stadia Announcement FAQ provides the shutdown details.

Can a Stadia Controller still connect to a PC or phone?

Yes, but the available connection depends on whether the controller was converted to Bluetooth before Google’s tool closed on December 31, 2024. The conversion deadline has passed, so an unconverted controller cannot now be switched to Bluetooth using Google’s tool. Google still documents USB as an option, and a controller converted before the deadline can use Bluetooth with compatible devices.

Connection What is needed Important limits
USB A USB cable and a device with a USB port. Google lists Windows and Android devices, as well as most devices that were compatible with Stadia. Does not require Bluetooth conversion.
Bluetooth The controller must have been converted before December 31, 2024. Pair it through the receiving device’s Bluetooth settings. Compatibility varies. Bluetooth Low Energy is required on computers, and some features may not work. Enabling Bluetooth permanently disables the controller’s Stadia Wi-Fi connectivity.

Bluetooth compatibility and button behavior

Google’s documented Bluetooth test targets include Windows 10 and 11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. Those targets are not a guarantee that the controller works with every device, game, or configuration: Google warns that other platforms and services have not been substantially tested and that haptics may not work everywhere. After conversion, the Assistant and Capture buttons no longer perform their former Stadia functions.
