In a 2022 interview with GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi, Newman described helping evaluate projects, shape online puzzle ideas and bring editorial judgment to game development. His perspective comes from decades in crossword editing and puzzle publishing—and from seeing how digital play can extend beyond paper.
What did “Chief Brain Games Mastermind” mean?
Newman came up with the title himself. As he told GamesBeat, it was meant to be attention-getting. The phrase may suggest that he personally created every game, but that is not how he described the job: “Creating puzzles is just a small part of it.”

He said he attended meetings about new projects and priorities, weighed which proposals were worth pursuing, and worked with teams that included programmers and artists. He also wanted to collaborate with people who could develop his ideas for online crossword experiences into products. The role combined puzzle expertise and editorial judgment with planning and collaboration.
How did Newman build his puzzle career?
Newman recounted that winning the first U.S. Open Crossword Championship helped lead him from Wall Street into puzzle work. He said he was hired to run puzzles and games for Random House in 1993, and that he encountered crossword apps by 1994. Crosswords became his deepest specialty, though he also worked with mazes, word searches, logic puzzles and other forms.

Arkadium’s current biography says Newman has been Newsday Crossword Editor since 1988 and has written more than 150 books, including crossword collections, word-game books and reference books. The company’s page does not date that cumulative book count. These details help explain the mix of editing, puzzle construction and publishing experience he brought to the digital role.
What makes a crossword work for its intended solver?
Newman’s interview emphasizes matching a puzzle’s clues and vocabulary to the person it is meant for. An easy crossword should use familiar words, avoid heavy trivia and still offer the satisfaction of working things out. Making one well is not simply a matter of making it short or obvious; the editor has to calibrate the challenge.
Arkadium’s Easy Crossword page describes a daily game with a clear theme, simple answers, easy clues and little trivia. It also lists print options for right- or left-handed solvers, large print and ink saving. The Sunday Crossword uses a 21-by-21 grid, according to Arkadium, and offers fresh puzzles on Saturdays and Sundays, with printable choices including large print.
Those formats give solvers a practical way to choose by cadence, difficulty and medium: a daily easy puzzle, a weekend grid, or a printable version. The options reflect the kind of editorial choices Newman discussed, rather than a single definition of what makes a crossword enjoyable.

Why did Newman see opportunity in digital puzzles?
For Newman, a screen was not just a substitute for newsprint. “There’s so much you can do on a screen that you can’t do with a piece of paper,” he told GamesBeat. He said he had spent decades thinking about new possibilities for online crosswords, including different puzzle types and difficulty levels, as well as trivia and combinations of formats.
Those were his ideas and ambitions in the interview, not a promise that every concept would become a released game. Arkadium’s Newman puzzle collection currently lists his Daily, Sunday, Easy and Hard crosswords alongside other crossword options. The Easy and Sunday pages also describe printable play, so digital access does not require solving exclusively on a screen.

Newman described solving as a source of enjoyment, a manageable challenge and a chance to practice flexible thinking. He spoke about the satisfaction of finishing a puzzle and about applying habits of reasoning to everyday problems. In recalling Margaret Farrar, whom the interview identifies as the first New York Times crossword editor, Newman quoted her view that completing a small morning challenge can set a positive tone for the day.
He also revisited a broader claim he had once emphasized—that crosswords, bridge or learning a foreign language could ward off Alzheimer’s. After reading a Washington Post article questioning that claim, he said: “Is that true? Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t.” His comments show a change in how he talked about the subject, not medical evidence that puzzles prevent Alzheimer’s, dementia or cognitive decline. The interview provides no clinical findings or health statistics.
