Roberts Space Industries (RSI) once described private servers as a planned Star Citizen feature, including the ability to modify game content. However, RSI’s newer descriptions focus on a centrally operated Persistent Universe built with Server Meshing. They do not document a downloadable server package, a player-hosted shard, or a supported way to run the Persistent Universe independently.
That makes the most accurate answer more precise than either “yes” or “the feature was canceled”: private-server availability is currently unverified in the official sources reviewed. The old promise remains evidence of historical intent, not proof that players can host Star Citizen today.

What RSI originally promised
RSI’s Updated FAQ contains an explicit historical promise: “The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content.” The same FAQ adds: “When operating private servers, players will be able and encouraged to mod the game.”
Read literally, those sentences describe more than a private lobby or an invite-only session. They describe servers operated by players, with room for community modifications. The FAQ also said Star Citizen would combine a “permanent, persistent world” with “an offline, single player campaign.” Those statements were published as intended features, but the FAQ does not establish that the current live Persistent Universe can be run offline or hosted by users.

The age and status of that FAQ matter. It is useful evidence of what RSI said it wanted to include, not a current product specification. A feature mentioned in an old FAQ should not be treated as available unless a current release note, support document, or announcement explains how players can access it.
Why Server Meshing is not the same as a private server
Current RSI material describes Server Meshing as the infrastructure that runs the official live universe. Multiple servers divide the simulation so that different locations or areas can be handled separately while players travel through one connected game world. That arrangement is intended to make the official service larger and more responsive; it does not, by itself, give players control of those servers.
Alpha 4.0’s initial implementation
RSI’s Alpha 4.0 release notes describe an initial Server Meshing implementation using multiple servers per shard for load distribution and travel between two solar systems. The notes identify a target of 500 players total on the shard for that initial implementation. This is a target for that specific implementation, not a universal or permanent limit for every Star Citizen shard.
The important distinction is ownership and control. In a private-server model, a player or community normally receives a server build, chooses configuration, and controls who connects. Alpha 4.0’s description instead concerns servers managed as part of RSI’s live service. It does not say that players can download the mesh, select a shard, alter simulation rules, or operate a standalone copy.

The Letter from the Chairman
RSI’s Letter from the Chairman describes Alpha 4.0 as a 4.0 Preview running on live servers. It explains that planets, landing zones, and major stations are covered by different game servers. That is a description of the official service’s internal distribution, not an announcement of community-operated hosts.
The March 2026 network update
In its March 2026 monthly report, RSI said the Network team was continuing work on Server Meshing and had tested Quasi-Dynamic Server Meshing. This approach distributes areas of the game world across dedicated servers according to current load. The update is a development report about the official network. It does not announce a player-server executable, hosting program, or private-universe launch date.
Server Meshing can therefore be summarized as backend architecture for RSI’s service. Private servers would be a player-facing hosting option. The first does not prove the second.
What the PTU is—and why it is not a private server
The Public Test Universe (PTU) is another source of confusion. RSI’s PTU FAQ, updated September 16, 2026, describes the PTU as a replica environment used to test unreleased patches before they reach the live game. Access is controlled through invitations and release waves.

A PTU account may therefore see a separate environment, different patch behavior, resets, or test-only conditions. None of that makes it a private server in the player-hosting sense. RSI creates and operates the environment, decides which build is available, controls admission, and uses it for testing. Players do not receive the underlying server software or authority to configure a persistent shard for their own community.
If an announcement says that a build is entering PTU, it means “test this RSI-managed version under controlled access.” It does not mean “download and host this version yourself.”
What the old Arena Commander reference means
A 2014 Arena Commander patch note referred to the temporary removal of private servers for that mode because of matchmaking problems. That note is historical and mode-specific. Arena Commander was a separate game mode, and the wording does not demonstrate that private Persistent Universe servers exist now.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is reasonable to use the note as evidence that RSI experimented with, or at least discussed, private match functionality in an earlier context. It is not reasonable to use it as proof that a modern player can host a Star Citizen universe, install server-side modifications, or invite a community to a self-managed shard.

The key terms at a glance
| Term | What the official material establishes | What you can safely conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Private servers | An older RSI FAQ promised an option for private servers and encouraged modding on them. | Historical intended feature; current availability is not verified by the official sources reviewed. |
| Server Meshing | Multiple servers distribute simulation across areas of the official live game and across a shard. | Backend architecture for RSI’s service, not evidence that users can self-host. |
| PTU | A controlled replica environment for testing unreleased patches, with invitations and waves. | Developer-managed testing, not an open private-server service. |
| Arena Commander private matches | A 2014 patch note mentioned temporarily removing private servers for matchmaking fixes. | Historical match functionality; do not equate it with current Persistent Universe hosting. |
Does Star Citizen currently support offline play?
The old FAQ’s reference to an “offline, single player campaign” is another historical statement of intent. It does not establish that the current Persistent Universe can be launched without RSI’s services, nor does it show that the campaign is available as a fully independent, modifiable server installation.
Persistent online architecture and an offline campaign are separate concepts. A game can provide a developer-authored single-player experience while keeping its shared universe online. Conversely, a player-hosted server would require a supported build, authentication behavior, persistence rules, and tools that the reviewed current materials do not document.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “unverified” means in practice
The official material reviewed does not provide a current private-server release date, a cancellation notice, or technical instructions for hosting one. That leaves three claims unsupported:

- It is not supported to say that RSI has definitively canceled the promised feature.
- It is not supported to say that the PTU, Server Meshing, or historical Arena Commander matches are substitutes for player-hosted servers.
The defensible status is narrower: RSI once promised the feature, while current official documentation does not verify that players can use it. If RSI changes that status, a meaningful announcement would need to identify the supported release, explain access, and distinguish a standalone server from an RSI-operated test or live shard.

How to check a future announcement
When evaluating a post, roadmap item, or patch note that mentions private servers, look for operational details rather than the phrase alone. A genuine player-hosting feature would normally answer several concrete questions:
- What software is provided? Look for a downloadable dedicated-server build or an explicitly supported server package.
- Which game mode is covered? Confirm whether the feature applies to the Persistent Universe, an offline campaign, Arena Commander, or another limited mode.
- Who controls persistence? A real private server should explain whether the operator controls saves, wipes, player lists, economy settings, and world rules.
- How do clients connect? Documentation should describe authentication, address or matchmaking behavior, account requirements, and whether an internet connection to RSI remains mandatory.
- What is the modification policy? If modding is supported, the announcement should state what can be changed and whether modified servers can connect to official services.
- What are the limits? Player caps, supported platforms, version compatibility, administration tools, and update procedures should be specified.
Without those details, terms such as “server,” “shard,” “test environment,” or “private instance” may refer only to RSI’s internal infrastructure or a restricted session.
What this means for players and communities
Players who want a controlled role-playing environment, custom rules, persistent community ownership, or extensive modding should not plan around a private-server feature as if it were released. The current official descriptions support participation in RSI’s live service and its controlled test environments, not independent hosting.

Likewise, a guild cannot assume that it can preserve a shard, run a custom economy, or continue a world after leaving the official service. Those capabilities would depend on tools and permissions that have not been documented. Community administrators should treat any third-party claim of a working private Persistent Universe server as unverified unless RSI publishes clear support and licensing information.
The old promise still matters because it explains why long-running discussions about Star Citizen private servers exist. It also explains why players may encounter references to modding, offline play, or Freelancer-style hosting. Those references trace back to stated plans, while the current Server Meshing and PTU documents describe different systems.
Bottom line on Star Citizen private servers
Star Citizen does not have player-hosted private Persistent Universe servers documented as available in the current official material reviewed. RSI’s old FAQ promised private servers, offline play, and modding, but its newer documentation describes an RSI-operated Persistent Universe, Server Meshing, and a controlled PTU. Those systems should not be conflated with self-hosting. There is also no reviewed official statement proving that the promised feature has been canceled, so its present status is best described as unverified rather than definitively abandoned.
