Yes—an SSD is required for Star Citizen. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) lists “150+ GB SSD required” in both the minimum and recommended specifications on its requirements page, updated September 23, 2026. RSI’s launcher troubleshooting guidance also says an SSD is required to play. A mechanical hard drive does not meet the game’s current official storage requirement.
What RSI officially requires
The current RSI system-requirements page lists the same storage requirement for both minimum and recommended configurations: 150+ GB of SSD storage. This is not presented as an optional performance upgrade. It is part of the requirement to run the game.

RSI’s launcher support guidance reaches the same conclusion, stating that an SSD is required to play Star Citizen. The requirements page was updated September 23, 2026, while RSI warns that specifications may change as development continues.

The table shows why buying an SSD is not a substitute for meeting the rest of the specification. Storage is only one part of the system, and RSI says actual frame rates and stability also vary with location, server population, background applications and network conditions.

How much free space should you leave?
Use 150+ GB as the minimum capacity target for the drive on which you will install Star Citizen, and verify the available space yourself before starting the download. RSI’s launcher troubleshooting page says the launcher does not currently compare the selected drive’s free space with the space required for installation.
Why the free-space check matters
A drive can have a capacity greater than 150 GB while still lacking enough free space. Other games, Windows files, shader caches, updates and temporary installer data may consume the remaining capacity. RSI warns that insufficient space can stop an installation or cause problems with updates and file verification.
- Check the free space on the exact drive selected in the launcher.
- Do not rely on the launcher to warn you that the drive is too full.
- Keep additional room available for future patches and file verification rather than filling the drive to its limit.
RSI’s separate pagefile guidance
An older RSI game-and-launcher requirements page, updated December 17, 2025, recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100 GB for the launcher and game, plus at least 10 GB of additional SSD space for the Windows pagefile.

That is separate guidance from the current 150+ GB requirement. Do not add the figures together as though RSI has published a new 260 GB minimum. The current 150+ GB SSD specification is the headline requirement; the 10 GB figure is additional recommended room for the pagefile on that older support page.
Can you play Star Citizen from an HDD?
Not according to the current official guidance. RSI identifies an SSD as required, so installing the game on a mechanical hard disk does not satisfy the published requirement.
RSI has not published a quantified HDD-versus-SSD benchmark in the cited documentation. There is therefore no official loading-time number, frame-rate penalty or stability percentage that can be used to describe an HDD installation. The practical decision is simpler: an HDD is outside the supported storage requirement, while an SSD meets the stated storage type.

If your computer has only an HDD, install an SSD before treating Star Citizen troubleshooting as a graphics, processor or network problem. A faster SSD may improve storage responsiveness, but it cannot compensate for insufficient RAM, an underpowered graphics card, server conditions or other causes of poor performance.

RSI specifies SSD storage but does not require NVMe, publish a minimum sequential or random speed, or name a preferred interface. The cited requirements also do not endorse a particular manufacturer or model.
That means a compatible SATA SSD can satisfy the stated storage-type requirement, as can a compatible NVMe SSD. Whether either drive fits your computer is a hardware-compatibility question rather than an RSI requirement.

Check these compatibility details before buying
- Form factor: Desktop and laptop systems may accept different physical sizes, such as a 2.5-inch drive or an M.2 module.
- Interface: An M.2 slot may support SATA, NVMe, or only one of those protocols. Check the motherboard or laptop manual.
- Available connector: A 2.5-inch SATA upgrade needs a SATA data connection and power connection; an M.2 installation needs a compatible slot and mounting screw.
- Capacity: Choose enough usable space for the game, Windows and future updates, not merely a nominal capacity that leaves the drive nearly full.
- Installation access: Laptops may require a specific single-sided module or may have no expandable storage bay.
These are general purchasing checks, not claims that RSI requires one SSD class over another.
How to check whether your current drive is an SSD
Before buying hardware, confirm the type and free space of the drive you plan to use. Windows offers several built-in ways to do that.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance in the left navigation.
- Choose each listed disk. Windows normally labels the device as SSD or HDD.
- Note which physical disk contains the drive letter where you intend to install the game.
Check free space in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Read the free-space figure beneath the target drive.
- Compare that figure with the 150+ GB requirement and leave additional room for updates.
Check the file system
- In File Explorer, right-click the target drive and select Properties.
- On the General tab, find File system.
- RSI’s older support page recommends NTFS for the launcher and game. If the drive uses another file system, back up important data before considering a reformat, because formatting erases the volume.
Installing Star Citizen on an SSD
Once you have confirmed the drive type and available space, use this sequence to avoid the most common storage-related failures.

- Choose the target drive. Decide which SSD volume will hold the RSI launcher and game. If you have multiple drives, identify the drive letter and physical disk rather than assuming the Windows system drive is the fastest one.
- Check free space manually. Confirm at least 150+ GB is available on that volume, with extra room for temporary files, updates and verification.
- Confirm the format. RSI’s older requirements guidance recommends NTFS. Check the drive’s Properties page before installation.
- Install or open the RSI launcher. Select the intended library or installation location in the launcher’s settings.
- Recheck the destination after selecting it. Because RSI says the launcher does not currently verify required space against the selected drive, do not skip this manual check.
- Allow space for updates. Avoid starting a major update with the SSD nearly full. Low space can interrupt updates or file verification even after the initial installation succeeded.
- Keep the launcher and game on the intended SSD. If you move files later, verify the launcher’s library path and available space again before attempting a repair or verification.
What an SSD does—and does not—solve
The SSD requirement establishes where the game should be installed; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate. RSI explicitly says performance, frame rates and stability depend on several variables beyond storage.
Problems an SSD requirement addresses
- Running the game from a storage type RSI does not list as supported.
- Installation failures caused by insufficient free capacity.
- Update or file-verification failures caused by a nearly full destination drive.
- Using a drive whose format or location is unsuitable for the launcher’s intended installation.
Problems an SSD upgrade may not address by itself
- Frame-rate drops tied to the game location, server population or network conditions.
- Memory pressure on a system with only the minimum 16 GB of RAM.
- Graphics-card limitations, CPU limitations or heavy background applications.
- Connection problems or instability unrelated to local storage.
RSI recommends 32 GB DDR4 memory for the recommended configuration, so a system that meets only the 16 GB minimum may still need a memory upgrade even after moving the game to an SSD.
Choosing an SSD when you need an upgrade
If your computer has no SSD or lacks enough available space, choose a compatible internal SSD based on capacity and fit first. RSI does not publish a required speed tier or endorse a specific model, so a higher-priced drive is not automatically necessary for compliance.

Do not treat the table’s general compatibility checks as official product endorsements. The official requirement is the storage type and capacity, not a brand, model or interface.
Storage troubleshooting checklist
Use the symptom that matches your situation rather than changing unrelated settings first.
The launcher cannot install the game
- Check free space on the selected drive in File Explorer.
- Confirm the launcher is pointing to the SSD rather than an HDD or a nearly full secondary volume.
- Free additional space beyond the nominal requirement and retry.
An update fails or file verification stops
- Recheck available space; RSI specifically warns that low storage can disrupt updates and verification.
- Close other applications that may be writing large files to the same drive.
- Confirm that the installation path has not changed to a different drive letter.
The system has an SSD but performance is still poor
- Check RAM, graphics and processor requirements rather than assuming the SSD is the only bottleneck.
- Consider the in-game location, server population, background applications and network conditions RSI identifies as performance variables.
- Do not infer from the SSD requirement that an NVMe upgrade will produce a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
Bottom line for Star Citizen players
An SSD is mandatory under RSI’s current guidance. Plan around 150+ GB of SSD storage, check the destination drive’s free space yourself, and leave room for updates and verification. RSI’s documentation does not require NVMe, specify a drive-speed target or recommend a model. A compatible SATA or NVMe SSD can meet the stated storage-type requirement, but the rest of the system still determines whether the game performs well.
