Star Fox Split-Screen vs. Online Multiplayer: Which Is Better for Playing With Friends?

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Choose local split-screen Battle Mode when everyone is in the same room. Choose Online Battle when friends are in different places, when you want matchmaking, or when you need a private match with adjustable rules. The current Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 treats those as different ways to assemble a group, not as identical versions of one session. Local Battle Mode supports up to four players on one console, while Online Battle supports up to eight players across consoles.

This comparison covers the Switch 2 game, released June 25, 2026, and its multiplayer additions. It does not describe every game in the franchise or the older Nintendo 3DS release.

The short answer: pick the mode that matches where your group is

Question Local split-screen Battle Mode Online Battle
Where are the players? Together at one Switch 2 On separate consoles and usually in separate locations
Maximum group Up to four players on one system Up to eight players online
How do friends join? Pair additional controllers before selecting pilots and a mission Enter matchmaking with friends or create a private battle
Can the game fill empty places? Yes. Human players can fight with or against CPU-controlled opponents Online matchmaking is available; the official support information does not state a minimum population or queue size
What is required? A compatible Switch 2 setup and enough controllers Internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online for online features; availability can vary by country
Best fit Same-room parties, quick rounds and groups sharing one screen Friends who are apart, matchmaking and private rule sets

Neither mode is documented as having better responsiveness, frame rate or network stability. Nintendo’s published mode descriptions establish the player limits and requirements, but they do not provide an independent performance comparison. The practical choice is therefore about group location, party size, setup and whether you want competition or cooperation.

What changed in the current Star Fox

Nintendo lists Star Fox as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is available through a free update, and Nintendo’s product listing records an added-multiplayer-content notice dated September 29, 2026. Those details matter because older multiplayer information from the franchise does not automatically apply to this game.

Battle Mode is the competitive option. You select pilots and a mission, then fight other players or CPU-controlled opponents. Online Battle uses the same broad competitive idea but assembles participants across consoles. The current support documentation also describes a separate campaign co-op option, which is not a variant of Battle Mode and should be evaluated on its own terms.

When local split-screen is the better choice

Everyone is physically together

Local play removes the need to coordinate separate consoles, accounts and internet connections. Put the Switch 2 where the group can see it, connect the additional controllers, and let each person choose a pilot before the mission starts. It is the natural option for a living-room session, a party or a family game night.

You want a compact, repeatable party format

A local Battle Mode round can be started from one shared system. If fewer than the local player limit are available, CPU-controlled opponents can occupy the remaining combat roles, so the group does not need to recruit a full room before beginning. This also lets a pair of friends practice against computer pilots without turning the session into a one-on-one match every time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have a mixed-experience group

Shared-screen play makes it easy to explain controls, compare pilot choices and restart a round immediately. More experienced players can still face CPU opponents while newcomers learn. The trade-off is that every participant must be comfortable viewing the same display, and the group must supply a controller for each human participant.

What local play costs and what it does not

The main extra local expense is hardware: each human needs a compatible controller, and the host needs the Switch 2 and the game. Nintendo’s published information does not set a universal controller price, so budget depends on what the group already owns and on local retail availability. A second console, separate internet connection, Nintendo Account or Nintendo Switch Online membership is not part of the local setup described by Nintendo.

How to start a local split-screen Battle Mode session

  1. Start Star Fox on the Switch 2 and open Battle Mode.
  2. Pair the additional compatible controllers with that console before entering the pilot and mission selections. Nintendo’s support instructions specifically place controller setup before those choices.
  3. Have each human player select a pilot. If the group is smaller than the available combat slots, include CPU-controlled opponents where desired.
  4. Choose the mission and begin the battle. Confirm the selected pilots and the presence of any CPU participants before launching.

The exact controller count is the main local constraint. The console itself is the host for the whole session, so an extra television or second copy of the game is not part of the local requirement described by Nintendo. Controller compatibility and availability still need to be checked for your hardware setup.

For a smooth party, pair every controller before handing out pilot choices, decide whether CPU opponents should fill open slots, and make sure everyone can read the shared display. Those are practical preparation steps, not claims about a technical advantage for split-screen.

When Online Battle is the better choice

Your friends are in different locations

Online Battle is designed for groups that cannot gather around one Switch 2. Each participant uses a console connected to the internet, and the group can assemble before entering matchmaking or use a private battle instead. This is the clearest reason to choose online: distance is no longer a reason to split the group into separate sessions.

You want a larger group than one console allows

The online player ceiling is higher than the local one. That makes Online Battle the appropriate route for a large friend group, provided everyone meets the online requirements and the host organizes the session around the supported capacity. Remember that “up to eight online” is the total battle capacity; it is not a promise that eight friends can always enter matchmaking as one pre-made party.

You want matchmaking or a private rule set

Nintendo describes two useful online structures. A group can join matchmaking together with up to three friends, whether those friends are local on one console or online on separate consoles. That creates a pre-made group of up to four before the search begins, while the battle itself can support up to eight online participants. A private battle can instead be created for invited participants, with customizable rules. Matchmaking is useful when you want the game to find additional opponents; a private battle is better when the group wants control over who enters and how the match is configured.

Mixed local-and-remote groups

You do not have to choose between every player being local and every player being remote. Nintendo’s support guidance allows friends joining matchmaking to be local on one console, online on separate consoles, or a mixture of both, subject to the stated friend-group limit. That makes it possible for two people on one Switch 2 to join friends elsewhere, but the local console still counts toward the overall online arrangement and the online battle limit remains eight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What online play requires

  • Internet access: Every console participating in Online Battle needs a working connection.
  • Nintendo Account: Nintendo identifies an account as an online-feature requirement.
  • Nintendo Switch Online: A membership is required for online features. The official information does not establish a single worldwide price in this comparison, and availability may differ by country.
  • Compatible hardware and game access: Participants need the Switch 2 version and a setup that supports the selected online mode.

Because country availability can vary, check Nintendo’s current regional support information before arranging a session across borders. Do not assume that an account, membership or feature available in one country is available under identical terms elsewhere.

In budget terms, online play may require a recurring Nintendo Switch Online membership in addition to the game and console. No single current price is stated here because Nintendo’s terms and currency differ by country. Local play may avoid that membership but can require buying or borrowing enough compatible controllers. Compare what your group already owns rather than assuming one mode is universally cheaper.

How to organize an Online Battle

  1. Confirm that every participant has internet access, a Nintendo Account and the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  2. Launch the game and open Online Battle.
  3. Decide whether the group is entering matchmaking or creating a private battle. Use matchmaking when the group is willing to be matched with additional opponents; use a private battle when the host wants an invite-based session and configurable rules.
  4. For a group entering matchmaking together, add up to three friends to the group before searching. The support guidance allows those friends to be local on one console, online on separate consoles, or a mixture of both.
  5. For a private battle, invite the intended participants and set the available rules before starting.
  6. Verify that everyone has joined the intended room or group, then begin the battle.

Nintendo’s published guidance does not state matchmaking population, average wait time, latency, disconnect rates or frame-rate behavior. Those variables can depend on region, connection quality and the time of day, so they should not be treated as reasons to declare online play technically superior or inferior.

Local and online are not the same kind of session

The two Battle Mode options share a competitive purpose, but they organize the social experience differently. Local split-screen is a single-console activity: one person supplies the system, the players share a display, and the group can add CPU opponents. Online Battle is a networked activity: participants bring accounts and connections, and the host chooses between matchmaking and a private room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction affects preparation. A local host should think about controllers, seating and screen visibility. An online host should think about accounts, memberships, invitations and whether the group wants open matchmaking or a controlled private match. Neither checklist is universally easier; the shorter one depends on the group you already have.

Campaign co-op may be better than either Battle Mode

If the group wants to experience missions together rather than fight one another, choose campaign co-op instead of either competitive option. Nintendo describes the mode as asymmetric: one player pilots the ship while the other aims the weapons. That division gives each participant a different job rather than giving both players identical controls.

Campaign co-op is available locally on one system or online through GameShare via GameChat with two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. The two-console online arrangement is distinct from the larger Online Battle format. A group seeking a cooperative story session should therefore plan for two consoles and the GameShare/GameChat route, rather than trying to use Battle Mode’s party structure.

This mode changes the decision criteria. A pair that wants teamwork may prefer it even when both players are in the same room, while a larger group cannot use it as a substitute for an eight-player Battle Mode match. Decide first whether the session goal is shared mission progress or head-to-head competition.

Decision guide for common friend-group situations

Four people are on one couch

Use local split-screen Battle Mode. Pair the controllers first, choose pilots and a mission, and add CPU opponents if the group wants a fuller fight. There is no reason to move this particular session online unless the group specifically wants remote matchmaking.

Two friends are in different cities

Use Online Battle. Check the internet, account and Nintendo Switch Online requirements for both players, then decide whether to search matchmaking or host a private battle. A private room is the clearer choice when only invited friends should participate.

A local group wants additional competition

Keep the local players together and enter matchmaking with the supported friend-group arrangement. Nintendo’s support instructions allow a group joining matchmaking to include friends who are local on one console and friends who are online elsewhere, subject to the stated group limit.

Six or more friends want one match

Plan an online session because the local format cannot hold that many human players on one system. Make sure every participant is eligible for the online feature in their region and decide in advance whether the match will be private or part of matchmaking.

Two players want to clear missions cooperatively

Select campaign co-op rather than Battle Mode. Decide who will pilot and who will aim, then use one-system local play or the two-console GameShare through GameChat arrangement.

Three friends are local and two are remote

Use the online route if you want one competitive session. Keep the local players on one console, add the remote friends within the supported matchmaking group arrangement, and remember that Online Battle can include up to eight participants overall. If you want only the invited people, use a private battle instead of open matchmaking.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing Battle Mode with campaign co-op: Battle Mode is competitive. The campaign option assigns pilot and gunner roles and is built around completing missions together.
  • Assuming the online limit applies locally: The console-based split-screen mode has its own lower player ceiling. A larger group must use the online structure.
  • Forgetting the membership requirement: Internet access alone is not the complete online checklist; Nintendo also lists a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Calling a private battle matchmaking: Matchmaking and private battles are separate online arrangements. Decide which one you want before inviting people.
  • Assuming eight friends can queue as one party: Nintendo specifies joining matchmaking with up to three friends, even though an online battle can support up to eight participants.
  • Using old 3DS instructions for the Switch 2 game: The franchise has older local-wireless modes that do not describe the current split-screen or online implementation.
  • Expecting published performance guarantees: The official pages reviewed do not establish latency, frame rate, connection stability or matchmaking population. Treat those as unknowns rather than promised advantages.
  • Buying extras before checking the setup: Confirm controller compatibility, regional online eligibility and which console will host local players before spending on additional hardware or memberships.

Do not confuse this game with Star Fox 64 3D

Star Fox 64 3D is a separate Nintendo 3DS release. Nintendo describes up to four players dogfighting through local wireless communication on their own Nintendo 3DS systems. Its multiplayer lineup includes Survival, Point Battle and Time Battle, and Nintendo’s 2011 announcement described a feature that used the 3DS camera to show opponents’ live video in the game.

That setup is not the Switch 2 game’s split-screen mode. Local wireless between multiple 3DS systems should not be presented as evidence about Switch 2 Online Battle, and the older modes should not be used to infer current account, membership or internet requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

For friends who can meet in one room, local split-screen Battle Mode is the more direct choice: one system, paired controllers, pilot selection and optional CPU opponents. For friends who are apart, for groups larger than one console can host, or for anyone who wants matchmaking or a private battle with customizable rules, Online Battle is the appropriate choice after meeting Nintendo’s account, internet and membership requirements.

If the goal is to cooperate through missions rather than compete, skip this comparison and use campaign co-op, where the pilot and gunner share responsibility. The best mode is therefore determined less by a universal quality ranking than by where the players are, how many people are joining and whether the group wants competition or cooperation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play Star Fox split-screen with friends?

Yes. The Switch 2 game’s local Split-Screen Battle Mode supports up to four players on one system. Pair the additional compatible controllers before selecting pilots and a mission; CPU-controlled opponents can fill open combat roles.

How many people can play Star Fox online?

Online Battle supports up to eight participants. Nintendo also specifies that a group entering matchmaking can bring up to three friends, whether those friends are local on one console, online on separate consoles, or a mixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online for Star Fox multiplayer?

Nintendo lists internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership as requirements for online features. Local split-screen Battle Mode uses one console and controllers instead.

Is local split-screen better than online play?

Neither is documented as technically superior. Local is the better fit for a same-room group; online is better for remote friends, matchmaking, private battles and groups larger than four on one console.

Can a local group play with online friends?

Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance allows local players on one console to join with friends using separate consoles, within the supported friend-group arrangement. Online Battle still has an overall limit of eight participants.

Can I play the campaign cooperatively?

Yes. Campaign co-op is separate from Battle Mode and assigns asymmetric roles: one player pilots while the other aims. It works locally on one system or online through GameShare via GameChat with two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between matchmaking and a private battle?

Matchmaking searches for opponents and lets a group enter together with up to three friends. A private battle is invite-based and supports customizable rules for a controlled session.

Is Star Fox 64 3D’s multiplayer the same as the Switch 2 game’s?

No. Star Fox 64 3D uses local wireless communication between Nintendo 3DS systems and includes Survival, Point Battle and Time Battle. Those modes do not describe Switch 2 split-screen or Online Battle.

The Bottom Line

Same room: choose local split-screen Battle Mode for up to four players, with optional CPU opponents. Different places or larger groups: choose Online Battle for up to eight participants, matchmaking or private customizable battles, provided everyone has internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online. Cooperative missions: use campaign co-op, where one player pilots and the other aims.
