At launch in March 2024, Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection—the product sold under the name “Classic Edition” in some coverage—was met with reports of unreliable multiplayer, bugs, and frustrated players. Ars Technica documented matchmaking failures and a stuck respawn countdown; Aspyr later acknowledged network-infrastructure errors and published updates listing fixes. Those records describe the 2024 launch and patch cycle, not the game’s server health today.
Why the launch drew backlash
The central complaint was not simply that matches were busy: players struggled to get into multiplayer at all. Ars Technica’s March 14, 2024 report described matchmaking problems, full sessions, and servers that were missing or difficult to find. Some players told Ars they could see only three servers, each with a maximum capacity of 64 players, while more than 9,000 people were playing concurrently around that time. The server count was a player-reported snapshot, not an independently audited count of available servers.
One error message captured the frustration: “Cannot join: session is full.” Alongside the access problems, players also reported bugs and control complaints, contributing to the angry response to the launch.
What Ars Technica observed—and what players reported
Ars reporter Kevin Purdy described his own attempts separately from the broader player reports. He encountered failed registration and matchmaking attempts, managed to play through one match, and later saw a respawn countdown remain stuck at “1.” That account documents one reporter’s experience; it is not a controlled test or a measure of how often players encountered each problem.

The distinction matters: the failed attempts and stuck countdown were Purdy’s reported experience, while the three-server figure came from player reports relayed by Ars. Neither should be read as a comprehensive measurement of every platform or session.
What Aspyr said about the network failures
In a March 19, 2024 support update, Aspyr acknowledged “critical errors with our network infrastructure.” The company said those errors resulted in “incredibly high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and servers not appearing in the browser,” and said it was working to improve network stability. This was Aspyr’s explanation for the launch symptoms, rather than an independent technical assessment.

What the 2024 updates said they fixed
Aspyr’s follow-up notes document fixes over three updates. They show what the publisher said it addressed, but do not establish that every issue disappeared for every player.
Update I: controls and early fixes
Aspyr’s Update I notes, originally posted March 18 and updated March 29, included making the invert-Y-axis option visible. The notes said the Steam update had released earlier while console certification was pending; by the March 29 update, Update I was available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. This is the rollout status reported at that time, not a current availability statement.

Update II: stuck respawn countdown and server lists
In its April 24 notes, Aspyr listed a fix for the respawn countdown getting stuck at 1, as well as fixes for server-list loading time and public-server stability.
Update III: server stability
Aspyr’s July 17 notes said Update III was available on all platforms and listed server-stability improvements. The notes document the publisher’s stated work; they do not demonstrate that all players’ problems were resolved or describe present-day performance.

What this launch record can—and cannot—tell players now
The contemporaneous coverage and publisher updates establish a troubled multiplayer launch, a public acknowledgment of network-infrastructure errors, and a sequence of later fixes covering controls, server-list behavior, the stuck countdown, and server stability. They do not provide a current player count, a present-day server inventory, or a platform-by-platform performance comparison. A launch-period figure or a 2024 patch note should not be used as a proxy for how the game runs now.
