If STAR WARS Battlefront II (2017) exits, freezes, or fails before its main menu on PC, work through these eight checks in order, testing the game after each change. The cause can depend on where the failure occurs and how you launch the game, so note your launcher and whether the crash happens before the game window, during loading, or at the menu. These are troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes.
Before you start: identify when the crash happens
A failure before the main menu is not necessarily the same problem as a crash at the menu or later in a match. Record the exact error, if one appears, and the point where the game stops. Also note whether you launch through the EA app, Steam, or Epic Games; EA lists all three as PC platforms for the game.

Make one change at a time, then restart the game and check whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to identify a useful fix and undo a change that makes things worse.
1. Restart Windows and close the launcher cleanly
Restart Windows, then open the launcher you normally use and try the game again. If the launcher was left running, exit it before restarting and launch it fresh afterward. This is a low-risk preliminary check, not a confirmed cure for every startup crash.

2. Install pending Windows updates
EA’s DirectX troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for Windows updates. Install pending updates through Windows Update, restart if prompted, and test Battlefront II again. EA’s DirectX and EA app troubleshooting guidance
3. Install the DirectX End-User Runtime if libraries are missing
If an error mentions a missing DirectX component or DLL, follow EA’s instructions for the Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime Installer. EA says the installer adds missing libraries needed to use the EA app; it is not evidence that every crash is caused by DirectX. Close the EA app before following the installer steps. Use Microsoft’s installer linked from EA’s guidance, not DLL-download sites.

4. Repair or verify the game in your storefront
Use the repair or verify option in the client through which you start the game: EA app, Steam, or Epic Games. The exact label and location can vary by client, so use that storefront’s current game-library controls. This is a community troubleshooting suggestion rather than a confirmed universal EA remedy. Let the check finish, then try launching the game again.

5. Test the DirectX setting only if the symptoms fit
Some EA forum reports associate a startup freeze with the game’s GstRender.EnableDx12 setting in its Boot Options file. Reports conflict: one setting may help one player while the opposite value was needed by another. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic, not a universal instruction to force DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Change only the DirectX setting, preserving a copy of the original file or value so you can restore it.
- Test the game after changing it. If the result is worse or unchanged, restore the original value or try the opposite value, one change at a time.

7. Temporarily disable overlays and background utilities
As an isolation test, temporarily turn off overlays or background utilities that may interact with a game, then launch it again. Community reports mention overlays, but this is not established as a general EA fix. Disable one item at a time so you can tell whether it affects startup, and restore its setting if it makes no difference.
8. Collect DxDiag details and contact EA support
If the game still will not start, use EA’s support hub for its crash and freezing, DirectX, and DxDiag help routes. Include the exact error text, launcher, Windows version, GPU and driver version, and whether the failure occurs before the window, during loading, at the menu, or later. DxDiag information can help support diagnose your PC configuration.

When the crash is not really a startup crash
If you can reach the main menu and the game fails only afterward, record that distinction when seeking help. A crash at the menu or during play may need a different diagnosis than a failure before the menu; do not assume that a startup-specific workaround addresses it.
