Star Wars Battlefront II gives players an unusual vantage point on the films’ aftermath: Iden Versio, an Imperial commander whose story begins after the second Death Star is destroyed. That makes the campaign a promising character-led story about loyalty and defeat, but its links to familiar heroes and events can draw attention away from Iden and Inferno Squad. Whether those callbacks enrich the story or crowd it is the campaign’s central tension.
Battlefront II starts with a fresh point of view
EA announced Star Wars Battlefront II for release on November 17, 2017, describing an original campaign starring Iden Versio, leader of the Imperial Inferno Squad. The game’s single-player story follows her after the destruction of the second Death Star, a premise that puts the player on the losing side of the Galactic Civil War rather than alongside the familiar Rebel heroes. The perspective offers natural dramatic questions: what does loyalty mean when the Empire is collapsing, and how does a soldier respond to defeat? Iden’s position gives the campaign room to explore those questions from within the Imperial ranks. It also provides a different route into the Star Wars saga than another story centered on its best-known heroes.
Why the film connections help—and constrain—the story
The campaign is set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, bridging the films across 30 years, according to StarWars.com. That placement makes the wider saga immediately relevant: recognizable events and returning figures can give the campaign context and a sense of connection to the films.

The trade-off is narrative emphasis. Every return to familiar material can take space from Iden and Inferno Squad’s own development. A campaign can be both an original Imperial story and a bridge built around established film history; the question is how much room it gives each purpose. GameSpot’s launch-era review called the campaign “admirable” while describing the game’s appeal as drawing on recognizable Star Wars highlights. That is one review’s characterization, not a universal verdict or proof that callbacks undermine the story for every player. (GameSpot’s review)

This is a question of balance, not a factual measure of how much campaign time belongs to one character or another. The available sources establish the premise and the campaign’s place in the film chronology, but do not provide a measured breakdown of screen time or prove that any particular callback weakens the experience.

Is the campaign good, and how long is it?
“Good” depends on what you want from a Star Wars story. If an Imperial viewpoint and a connection to the film timeline appeal to you, Iden’s premise is a meaningful change of perspective. If you would rather spend the campaign chiefly with a new character and squad, the familiar saga material may feel like a competing priority. GameSpot’s “admirable” assessment is a useful contemporary critical view, but it remains an individual review.
For length, a 2017 GameSpot report relayed a development-team estimate of “around 5-7, maybe 8 hours.” Treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time: how long a playthrough takes can vary. (GameSpot’s campaign-length report)

Is it an Imperial campaign, and is it canon?
You play as Iden Versio, an Imperial commander and leader of Inferno Squad, so the campaign begins from an Imperial perspective. Its setting bridges Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, as StarWars.com describes. Those sources support the protagonist and the story’s place in the film chronology; they do not establish that every mission is exclusively about Imperial characters or provide a separate canon policy statement.

The single-player story is a significant part of Battlefront II, but it is not the whole game. In an official retrospective, the developers describe the campaign as an important part of the story while also emphasizing the importance of multiplayer scope and feel. If your main interest is Iden’s narrative, the campaign is the relevant mode; the game was designed with more than that experience in mind. (StarWars.com’s development retrospective)
