In an interview published by StarWars.com on December 12, 2025, Hudson described the project as an all-new story built around player agency and immersion. The announcement is a premise, not a full account of the plot.

Is Fate of the Old Republic KOTOR 3?
No. Lucasfilm Games says it is not a direct sequel or continuation of KOTOR. The official description is a spiritual successor: a new story and new characters that carry forward the earlier game’s tradition of a deep, cinematic, choice-driven Star Wars RPG.
There is a creative connection, though. Hudson directed the original KOTOR, released in 2003, and the new game is led by him. Lucasfilm Games executive Douglas Reilly said of the team, “it is being built by people who helped shape that legacy.”

How it differs from the KOTOR remake
Fate of the Old Republic is a new game, not the remake of the original KOTOR announced in 2021. The projects have different identities and development teams, and the remake’s platform announcement does not establish where Fate will eventually be available.

The 2021 PlayStation Blog announcement described the original game’s story as part of Star Wars Legends and set more than 4,000 years before the original trilogy. That background applies to the original KOTOR; it does not confirm the new game’s exact story setting or platforms.

Release date, development status, and platforms
There is no announced release date or release window. Arcanaut’s developer announcement says the game is in early development for PC and consoles. It does not name particular consoles, provide a preorder, or give a launch schedule.
GameSpot reported on December 12, 2025 that the project was at a very early stage; its suggestion that release could be years away was commentary, not a confirmed timetable. The reliable answer for now is that development is early and timing remains unannounced.
