Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player, narrative-driven action RPG from Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games. Announced at The Game Awards on December 12, 2025, it is described as a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic—not a direct sequel or continuation. The new story follows a Force user, but the announcement has not confirmed a release date or specific console platforms.
Is Fate of the Old Republic KOTOR 3?
No. Lucasfilm Games says Fate of the Old Republic is not a direct sequel or continuation of Knights of the Old Republic. It has an all-new story and new characters. The “spiritual successor” description means the team aims to honor KOTOR’s tradition of cinematic, choice-driven role-playing without carrying on its plot. Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly said the game is “being built by people who helped shape that legacy.” Read the StarWars.com interview.

What kind of game is confirmed?
Arcanaut describes it as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. Players take the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy “on the edge of rebirth.” The studio says decisions will deepen the player’s journey toward light or darkness. Those are broad premise details, not a description of a specific branching-choice system or combat mechanics. The announcement has not named the protagonist, companions, or plot events. Arcanaut Studios’ announcement and the official interview provide the confirmed details.
Who is developing it?
Arcanaut Studios is making the game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Casey Hudson, who directed the original KOTOR, is leading the project as game director. Arcanaut says it was founded in July 2025 by Hudson and founding partners Chris Bain, Cordy Rierson, and Ryan Hoyle. The studio describes itself as Canadian, headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, with an additional office in Kelowna. Hudson said the team is telling “a completely new and different story” shaped by what it has learned since KOTOR, with themes of choice, destiny, light, and darkness. Arcanaut’s announcement.

Can you play the original KOTOR while you wait?
The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available in several digital formats. StarWars.com lists iPad, iPhone, Mac, and PC versions. Nintendo lists the Switch version as download software. Separately, Limited Run Games documented a physical, region-free Switch cartridge edition, including a Premium Edition with items such as a SteelBook and concept-art cards. That physical release is distinct from Nintendo’s digital listing; the cited pages do not establish current stock or retailer availability. Neither version is Fate of the Old Republic.
