Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a newly announced, single-player action RPG from Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games. Casey Hudson, director of the original Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), leads the project. It is described as a spiritual successor to KOTOR, but Lucasfilm Games says it is not a direct sequel or continuation. The game is in early development for PC and consoles, with no release window announced.
What was announced at The Game Awards?
A teaser at The Game Awards 2025 revealed Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG being developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The official announcement describes players as Force users in a story set at the end of the Old Republic era.

Arcanaut says it was founded in July 2025 and is based in Canada. The studio is led by Casey Hudson, who directed the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. Hudson described the new game as “a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since.” (Arcanaut Studios announcement)
Is Fate of the Old Republic a KOTOR sequel?
No direct story continuation has been announced. Arcanaut calls the game a spiritual successor to KOTOR, reflecting its creative lineage and broad relationship to that game. Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly made the distinction explicit: “Although Fate of the Old Republic is not a direct sequel or continuation.” StarWars.com also says the game will feature new characters and an all-new story. That makes “spiritual successor” a statement about inspiration and creative connection, not confirmation that KOTOR characters or events will carry over. Hudson’s involvement links the projects, but the new game’s story is presented as distinct.

When does Fate of the Old Republic come out?
No release date or release window was given in the announcement. Hudson said, “We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead.” A teaser is not evidence of a particular launch timeline, so there is no confirmed date to plan around. (StarWars.com interview)
