Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player action RPG from Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games, directed by Casey Hudson. Revealed at The Game Awards 2025, it is described as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic—but Lucasfilm Games says it is not a direct sequel or continuation. The game is in early development, and no release date has been announced in the official materials.
What is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic?
It is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG set in the Star Wars galaxy. Players will take the role of a Force user, with decisions that the official description says deepen their journey toward light or darkness. The announcement does not explain how those choices work in play.

Arcanaut Studios is developing the game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The teaser trailer was revealed live at The Game Awards 2025, and StarWars.com published its announcement and interview on December 12, 2025. StarWars.com’s announcement and interview and Arcanaut Studios’ announcement describe the project as being in early development.
Is Fate of the Old Republic KOTOR 3?
No. Arcanaut calls it a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly explicitly says it is not a direct sequel or continuation. The announcement promises new characters and an all-new story, so it should not be described as KOTOR 3.
#1 Best Overall
- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
That connection is about creative lineage rather than a confirmed continuation of the earlier game’s plot. Reilly put it this way in the StarWars.com interview: “Although Fate of the Old Republic is not a direct sequel or continuation, ‘it is being built by people who helped shape that legacy,’”
Who is making the game?
Casey Hudson is leading the project as Arcanaut’s game director. StarWars.com identifies Hudson as the director of the original KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy. His involvement links the new game to a creator associated with both series, but does not establish that it will share their specific mechanics or structure.

- This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Hudson described the project as a new story in Arcanaut’s announcement: “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since – crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark.”
Lucasfilm Games’ Douglas Reilly said in the same release: “The Old Republic era is a rich and beloved part of the Star Wars™ galaxy, and we are thrilled to be exploring a fresh story that we’ve never seen before in Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic,”

What platforms are confirmed, and when will it come out?
Arcanaut’s announcement lists PC and consoles, but does not name specific console models. The official materials reviewed for this article do not give a release date, price, preorder details, or store listing. “Early development” is the stated status; it is not a release window.
What gameplay details have been revealed?
The confirmed outline is a single-player action RPG about a Force user, with a narrative shaped by decisions and a journey toward light or darkness. The announcement does not provide details about combat, companions, exploration, branching paths, or how player choices affect the story. Treat trailer imagery and broad descriptions as a reveal of the project’s premise, not a full gameplay breakdown.

- You are a young Jedi Knight, charged with leading a group of freedom fighters across the galaxy
- Recruit droids, humans, Wookies and other races to join your resistance group -- and train them in great mini-games like racing swoop bikes or manning turret guns
- Journey to dozens to unique locations, from the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyk to the Jedi Academy of Dantooine
- Customizable and evolving characters keep the story fresh and the gameplay interesting -- especially when you have to choose between the Light & Dark Sides of The Force
What to play while you wait
If you want context for the spiritual-successor connection, the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the relevant earlier game. StarWars.com identifies it as a 2003 release. It is a separate, already released game—not a playable version of Fate of the Old Republic.
