By story chronology, the clearest placements in the available official sources are Star Wars: The Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic in the ancient Old Republic era, followed much later by Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor, and Outlaws. This is a guide to games with an identifiable story setting—not a complete catalogue of every licensed Star Wars game, many of which have no single established place in the timeline.

Star Wars games in story chronological order

Chronological order here means when a game’s story happens in the Star Wars universe, not when the game was released. The order below separates broad era placements from explicit intervals; it does not imply that every game in an era has a precisely established date.

Story order Game Story placement How precise is the placement?
1 Star Wars: The Old Republic More than 3,000 years before the classic films. Lucasfilm gives a broad era description, not a specific calendar date.
Old Republic era Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic An earlier-era role-playing game set in the Old Republic period. Its broad era is established, but the sources here do not establish its precise order relative to The Old Republic.
After Episode III Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order After Revenge of the Sith, with Cal Kestis living after he escaped the Jedi purge known as Order 66. EA identifies the relationship to Episode III; no exact interval is given here.
Next Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Five years after the events of Fallen Order. Lucasfilm explicitly gives the five-year interval.
Between Episodes V and VI Star Wars Outlaws Between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Lucasfilm identifies the placement between the two films.

The Old Republic games

The Old Republic is the MMO that Lucasfilm describes as taking place more than three thousand years before the classic films. Knights of the Old Republic is also an Old Republic-era RPG, but the sources establishing these broad placements do not provide enough detail to rank the two stories precisely against each other. Treat them as games from the same broad ancient era rather than assuming a definitive sequence.

The Jedi games

Start with Fallen Order, then play Survivor. EA places the first game after Episode III, and Lucasfilm says the second begins five years after the first game’s events. That makes their relative story order clear even without assigning either a specific year.

  • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)

Outlaws

Outlaws belongs between Episodes V and VI. Its position is anchored to those films rather than to either Jedi game, so the table establishes its era without suggesting a more exact date.

What order should you play them in?

If you want to follow the clearest continuous story, play Fallen Order before Survivor. The other games in this guide do not form one required sequence with that pair: Outlaws has its own story between Episodes V and VI, while the Old Republic titles occupy a much earlier era. For those two, a strict order between them is not established by the placements above.

Story chronology is not release chronology

Release dates tell you when games came out; they do not determine where their stories fit in the galaxy’s history. Lucasfilm’s company history records selected releases, rather than a complete Star Wars game catalogue:

Release year Selected release(s) recorded by Lucasfilm
2003 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, released by LucasArts in collaboration with BioWare.
2004 Star Wars: Battlefront and LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, released by LucasArts.
2011 Star Wars: The Old Republic, released by LucasArts in partnership with BioWare.
2019 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, released by Lucasfilm Games.
2023 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released by Lucasfilm Games.

These are documented milestones, not every Star Wars game released in those years or across the franchise’s history. A complete release-order list would also need a defined scope for platforms, ports, remasters, delisted games, mobile releases, and multiplayer experiences.

Why this is not literally every Star Wars game

“Every Star Wars video game” can mean every licensed release, every canon story with a fixed date, or only story-focused games. Those are different lists. Multiplayer, mobile, anthology, and largely non-narrative games may not have one straightforward story placement, and the official pages used for the placements above are selective rather than a complete inventory.

Lucasfilm describes the Star Wars Heritage Pack as a collection of seven classic games, but that collection is not itself a chronology or a complete franchise catalogue. A timeline that claims to include every licensed game would need an independently verified inventory and clear rules for how to handle titles without a fixed narrative setting.
