Do not start by deleting random files. The symptom determines which evidence matters and prevents you from confusing a loading problem with a save or compatibility problem.

Write down the symptom before changing anything. Note whether it happens on every launch, only with one character or universe, or only after a particular action. That description will help you distinguish a global loading failure from content that affects an existing save.

Use the correct launch path for Workshop mods
Steam Workshop subscriptions are tied to the Steam launch environment. Start Starbound from your Steam library when you expect subscribed Workshop content to load. The Chucklefish modding tutorial warns that running starbound.exe directly from the win32 or win64 folder—including from a copied Starbound folder used for testing—will not load Workshop mods correctly.
- Close every Starbound process.
- Open Steam and select Starbound in your library.
- Press Play in Steam rather than opening an executable shortcut or a copied game folder.
- Wait for Steam to finish any Workshop downloads before the game reaches the title screen.
- Check the mod’s expected feature in a new test session.
If a manually installed mod works but all Workshop subscriptions appear missing, this launch check is more informative than reinstalling the mod. A direct executable launch can make a healthy subscription look broken.
Confirm that the files are installed where Starbound can see them
Manual installations
Manually installed mods belong in the game’s mods directory. Open the mod archive and inspect its top-level structure. The directory immediately inside mods should contain the mod’s files, not another folder that contains the real mod folder.
A common mistake looks like mods/ModName/ModName/... when Starbound expects the files at mods/ModName/.... Move only the correctly structured mod directory into mods; do not scatter individual files unless the mod’s instructions explicitly require that layout.
Workshop subscriptions
Open the mod’s Workshop page and confirm that you are still subscribed. Steam can queue a download after a subscription change, so let that download complete before launching. If the page lists a required dependency, subscribe to that dependency as well. A subscription that is visible in Steam but has not finished downloading is not yet available to Starbound.
Avoid mixing test copies without a plan
Testing from a copied Starbound directory can be useful for risky experiments, but it changes how Workshop content is discovered. Use Steam for Workshop testing, or use a deliberately separated copy containing only manual mods. Do not infer that a mod is defective solely because it is absent when the game was started from a copied executable.

Read starbound.log before restarting again
The decisive diagnostic file is starbound.log. It records loading activity, patch failures, Lua exceptions, missing assets, and other status or error information. Starbound rotates the log when the game restarts, so the useful failure can disappear from the current file after you launch again.

Find the log
For a Steam installation on Windows, open:
Steam/steamapps/common/Starbound/storage/starbound.log
The official Starbound FAQ provides equivalent storage locations for macOS and Linux. Whatever platform you use, open the file in the game’s active storage directory, not an old backup or a different installation.
Capture the right run
- Close Starbound after reproducing the issue, or leave it open if the problem is a visible in-game error.
- Copy the current
starbound.logto another folder before starting Starbound again. - Open the copied file and search for
Error,Exception,Could not apply patch,LuaException, missing asset names, and recognizable mod identifiers. - Read several lines before and after the first relevant error. Later messages are often consequences of the original failure.
- Record the mod name, asset path, and dependency named in the message.
A missing required mod can stop startup entirely. A patch error may identify the exact JSON or asset another mod changed. A Lua exception often points to a script or interface action rather than a failure to discover the mod. The log is more reliable than the order in which Workshop tiles appear.
Understand Starbound’s load order, priorities, and dependencies
Starbound does not combine mods in an arbitrary order. In broad terms, base game assets load first, then the regular local mods directory, then Workshop content. A mod’s priority value and its requires relationships can change the effective order within that process.
The requires field
A mod can declare other mods in its requires field. Those required mods must exist and load immediately before the dependent mod. If a listed requirement is absent, misspelled, or unavailable after an update, startup can halt and the log will normally identify the missing relationship.
When the log names a required mod, do not work around it by renaming arbitrary folders. Install the exact dependency specified by the author, check whether its version is compatible, and retest with both mods present.
Priority and overwrite conflicts
Two mods can change the same asset while appearing individually healthy. The later-loaded change may override the earlier one, so the feature you expected can look as if it “does nothing.” This is especially common with interface files, recipes, player stats, tiles, and other shared assets.

Check each mod’s metadata or documentation for a priority requirement. If two mods edit the same file, decide which behavior you want and follow the author’s compatibility or load-order instructions. A clean log does not prove that the intended change won: an override can be technically valid while hiding another mod’s change.
Use the log to verify your assumption
When a conflict is suspected, search for both mod identifiers and the affected asset. If the log reports a patch against an asset that another mod also changes, disable one of the pair and retest. This converts a vague “mod missing” report into a reproducible ordering test.
Isolate the failing mod without guessing
Chucklefish support’s recommended first step is: “If you’re using mods and having issues – first try disabling all mods to identify if they may be a factor, then enable one test which may be causing the error.” Follow that principle in a controlled sequence.
Small collections: one at a time
- Back up the
storagefolder before changing a collection that has been used with a save. - Disable every mod, including Workshop subscriptions and manually installed content.
- Launch Starbound through Steam and confirm that an unmodded session reaches the title screen and can start a safe test world or character.
- If vanilla Starbound still fails, the immediate cause is not a mod collection; verify the game installation and inspect the fresh log.
- If vanilla works, enable one suspected mod and launch again.
- Use the same test action each time, then capture the current log if the failure returns.
- Continue until the failure appears, then test that mod by itself and with only its declared dependencies.
Large collections: the half-split method
Enabling hundreds of mods individually creates unnecessary restarts. Instead, divide the collection into two groups. Enable one half and test. If the error appears, divide that failing half again; if it does not, test the other half. Repeat until the smallest failing group contains the culprit. Then test individual mods within that group.

This method preserves the same logic as one-at-a-time testing while reducing the number of launches. Keep a written list of which group was active for each run so that a Workshop update or accidental re-enable does not invalidate the comparison.
Test dependencies together
Once a candidate is identified, do not test it in an artificially incomplete state. Enable the candidate plus every dependency it declares, and no unrelated mods. A dependency failure can otherwise be misdiagnosed as a defect in the main mod.
Account for game and Workshop updates
When the problem began immediately after a Starbound update, assume compatibility is a possibility before changing your save. Official support guidance is to update mods when the game updates and report continuing problems to the mod developer.

- Note the date or game version at which the behavior changed.
- Open each affected Workshop page and read its compatibility notes, required dependencies, and known conflicts.
- Update the mod and its dependencies where an updated release is available.
- If no compatible release exists, leave the mod disabled while testing the rest of the collection.
- Provide the developer with the relevant log section and a concise reproduction description rather than only saying that the game crashes.
A Workshop update can also change a dependency without changing the mod you were watching. Recheck the complete dependency chain after Steam finishes downloading updates.
Protect characters and universe data while troubleshooting
Back up Starbound’s entire storage folder before removing a substantial content mod or opening an existing save with a radically different collection. The Chucklefish tutorial specifically recommends this backup and suggests testing significant mods with a new character or a separate copy of the game.
Why a vanilla test is not a save repair
A mod may add items, objects, quests, planets, or scripts that an existing character or universe now references. Removing it can make a save fail even when a fresh character starts normally. A successful vanilla launch therefore proves only that the base game starts; it does not prove that an old save is safe to open without the mod.
Safer test procedure
- Exit Starbound completely.
- Copy the
storagefolder to a dated backup location. - Keep the original save untouched while you disable or rearrange mods.
- Use a new character and a fresh test world for startup and feature checks.
- Open your established character only after the required content mods and dependencies are restored.
If a test damages or removes expected content, close the game without continuing and restore the backup rather than repeatedly loading the altered save.
Choose the next fix from the evidence
When more than one remedy seems plausible, rank the evidence in this order:
- Vanilla reproducibility: If the game fails with every mod disabled, stop investigating mod conflicts and address the base installation or a fresh log.
- A named mod or asset: A direct identifier in
starbound.logis stronger evidence than the fact that a Workshop tile is present. - Dependency or priority requirement: Missing requirements and ordering instructions should be corrected before experimenting with unrelated settings.
- Timing after an update: A failure that began after a game or Workshop update deserves a compatibility check and an updated release.
- Save exposure: If the affected character or universe already contains the mod’s content, back up and use a separate test before removing it.
Use one change per test whenever possible. If you update three mods, move files, and change priorities at the same time, a successful launch will not tell you which change solved the problem.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower
Launching the executable directly
This can suppress Workshop discovery and create a false conclusion that subscriptions are broken. Return to the Steam Play button for Workshop tests.

Restarting before copying the log
Because the log is rotated on restart, the error you need may be replaced. Copy the current file immediately after reproducing the failure.

Removing content that a character or universe uses can create a second problem. Back up storage and test with a new character or separate copy first.
Changing load order blindly
Priority changes cannot repair a missing dependency, and they can hide the intended behavior of another mod. Use the log and each mod’s documented requirements to choose an order.
Testing a candidate without its dependencies
A mod that requires another mod is not a valid standalone test. Install or enable the declared requirements before judging the candidate.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact the mod author
Contact the developer after you can provide a reproducible failure with all of the following information:

- The exact action that triggers the issue.
- The relevant section of the current

This evidence distinguishes an installation mistake from a genuine compatibility bug and gives the author a path to reproduce it.

Starbound mod failures are usually diagnosable rather than mysterious: the launch path, installation structure, load order, and rotated log provide a finite set of checks. Preserve the log and your saves, change one variable at a time, and let the first reproducible error—not guesswork—determine the fix.
